“I reckon we’ll bag ourselves a bargain at that auction. She had some good stuff here—ornaments and so on. It all comes with the house, so we’ll make a tidy sum out of that alone. There’s no reserve on this place. I mean, who else would want it in this condition?”
Good old Neil, still counting the cost and calculating the profit.
The estate agent has finished his cigarette.
“Have you seen all you want to see?”
Neil takes a long, hard look around the hall. He hasn’t moved into any of the rooms. Heather has been running from the kitchen to the living room, dining room, library, and is on the third stair. But she does what she’s told, that one.
“Oh yes,” Neil says. “We’ve seen everything we need to see. Come along, Heather.”
The estate agent leads the way out, followed by the girl. Neil brings up the rear. The others have gone slightly ahead. He pauses at the door and turns around.
From far away, a piano begins to play the song I had hoped never to hear again. My friends lay their spirit hands on my shoulders—their touch impossibly warm and gentle.
Neil looks straight at me. A moment of panic. Can he
see
me?
A smile creeps over his face and his eyes flash a red flame that sends me reeling. “I’ll bring them back.”
He closes the door.
I hear it at the same time as the others. A sigh, running through the entire fabric of the house.
Hargest has heard him.
And his master is hungry.

When Jane refuses to name another victim, the angel reveals her most terrifying side. Payment must be made in full—one way or the other.
Four hundred years ago, ten convicted witches were hanged on Gallows Hill. Now they are back…for vengeance.
Laura Phillips’s grief at her husband’s sudden death shows no sign of passing. Even sleep brings her no peace. She experiences vivid, disturbing dreams of a dark, brooding hill, and a man—somehow out of time—who seems to know her. She discovers that the place she has dreamed about exists. Pendle Hill. And she knows she must go there.
But as soon as she arrives, the dream becomes a nightmare. She is caught up in a web of witchcraft and evil…and a curse that will not die.
