The cover features an anthropomorphic locomotive with a pink cowcatcher. The story mentions a girl named Susannah, a man named Martin (Marten) and a train that runs between St. Louis (Lud) and Topeka. Charlie is a 402 Big Boy Steam Locomotive, the best train in the Mid-World Railway Company until a diesel locomotive replaces him. His operator is Engineer Bob Brooks.
