“See you cannot hide how you feel.”
Little George slipped from her breast gurgling, as milk spilled from the corner of his mouth. Andrew stood and leant forward, to take him from her, then raised George to his shoulder.
While she secured her bodice, Andrew rubbed the child’s back, and sat down again.
Mary rose and moved to rest a hand on Andrew’s shoulder, then she leant and pressed a kiss on his temple.
“You are my family, you and George
.
”
His light brown glowing eyes turned to her; amber and honey. “And you and George are everything to me.”
“You have been everything to me since that night in the darkness.”
He smiled. “Since we swam in the lake.”
“No, since the night in town, when I met you outside at Uncle Richard’s. Do you remember?”
He smiled. “Yes, I remember. You were the sweetest thing. I’d stood out there watching you among your family, waiting to see if you’d take the bait. I was wooing you physically then as I recall, until you said no to me in that glasshouse, and then I had to think again and woo your heart and mind instead.”
“You owned my heart, long before that, Andrew.”
“I wish I’d known it, and then I would not have hurt you so much.”
Her fingers cupped his shaven cheek. “It does not matter, I think those first weeks have only made us stronger now.”
She pressed a kiss on his lips.
The inspiration for this story came to me when I read the letters of Lady Caroline Lamb, whose family history was thickly woven with that of Harriette Wilson, the Regency courtesan whose memoirs inspired the first book in the Marlow Intrigues series,
The Illicit Love of a Courtesan
, and began it all.
If you would like to discover some of the real stories that inspired elements of this fictional story, then you’ll find them on my

Drew and Mary will be back to play a large part in the next Marlow intrigues story,
The Secret Love of a Gentleman
, because I think, Lady Kilbride, Caro, deserves her ending told.
Also by Jane Lark…

The Desperate Love of a Lord (A Free Regency Romance Novella)
I love writing authentic, passionate and emotional love stories. I began my first novel, a historical, when I was sixteen, but life derailed me a bit when I started suffering with Ankylosing Spondylitis, so I didn’t complete a novel until after I was thirty when I put it on my to do before I’m forty list. Now I love getting caught up in the lives and traumas of my characters, and I’m so thrilled to be giving my characters life in others’ imaginations, especially when readers tell me they’ve read the characters just as I’ve tried to portray them.
