For a moment Cathy’s eyes met Kane’s and beneath the anger, the fury, the insurmountable hatred of her gaze his own expression faltered. His lip wobbled as if he was about to cry and he looked as helpless as a little boy being called up by his teacher for bullying the other kids. All along that’s all he’d ever really been.

“Look what you made me do,” he whispered and then in slow motion a shotgun blast hit him in the chest knocking him to his knees. Kane fell and would rise no more.

you ok?” Mark panted, darting towards her and letting the shotgun that they kept behind the bar for protection drop to the ground.

Cathy ignored
him,
all she could think about was Bud. She leapt from her chair, free now from the confines of paralysis and ran to his side. If he could be ok, if he could just be ok, she’d do anything. She’d give her life to God if he asked her, run away and join a monastery if she could only keep Bud Sundance alive to come visit her now and again.

“Call an ambulance,” she called to Mark.

“Oh shit, Bud…”

“Call an ambulance!”

Mark darted back to the bar to call the paramedics and Cathy placed a shaking hand on Bud’s shoulder.

“Bud,” she cried, the tears spilling from her cheeks as the sobs choked her voice, “Bud, speak to me.”

Seconds were like whole hours as she waited for him to respond and then time returned to normal as Bud moaned softly beneath her touch.

“Oh shit,” he muttered, “where in hell am I?” Suddenly the memories flooded back to him and he tried to sit up. “Jesus, Kane!” Before Bud could rise, he was bent over again by the crippling agony of his wound.

Cathy tore off a strap of her dressing gown and dabbed at the blood beneath him, looking for the bullet wound. Softly examining him, she finally found it on his chest two inches to the left of his heart. He was going to be ok, she was sure of that now, but if the bullet had caught him only a split second earlier he’d be as dead as his old friend was right now.

Once all the madness died down again, Cathy and Bud moved in together and soon after that they made plans for the wedding. Now at last she would have the true best man.

This time around the actual role of best man fell to Mark to inhabit and, while he was not a patch on Bud Sundance, he had still saved both of their lives and for that they would forever be in his debt. Bud made Cathy a partner in the bar and soon after that they created a new position of “junior” partner for Mark. Around that time he met a troubled but good hearted young girl from out of town who agreed to take up Cathy’s old job at the Roadhouse. Within weeks the young
couple were
head over heels in love and had a baby on the way. Seeing the joy it brought them got Cathy and Bud thinking too and they decided they’d both come to a time in their own lives when they were ready to raise a family of their
own.
They started making plans.

From then on life in Dancers’ Outpost was a whole lot more exciting and a whole lot more enjoyable too. Cathy had finally found her
knight,
in fact he’d been right in front of her all along. And as for Kane Fury, well nobody spoke much about him one way or the other at all. He never did get to keep the kingdom he’d guarded over so viciously and deep down everybody knew that was as it should be. Some men don’t deserve the goodness in the world.
