“Ah, Mademoiselle, I could not stay away, oui?”

Cohen nudged the horse into a canter and they fled to the docks.

Epilogue

Kassie rolled over in bed, gazing at the emerald ring on her finger, her heart bursting with happiness. The bed dipped as Cohen pulled her back against his warm chest.

“What are you thinking?” he murmured in her ear.

She smiled to herself. “I was just thinking how happy I
am.” She wriggled closer.

“Careful or you will be even happier in a moment, albeit late for breakfast,” he teased.

She stretched with a carefree giggle. “Then let me up so I might dress.”

“I like you naked.” He wrapped his arms around her.

A sudden overwhelming sensation of nausea gripped her. “No really, Cohen, let me up, quick!”

He released her and sat up as she bolted for the bathing room. She knelt in front of the chamber pot and retched. When she finished she leaned against t
he wall and closed her eyes. Cohen’s soft footfalls padded into the room. She opened her eyes. He held a towel and her dressing gown out. She took them, grasping his hand to help her up, the twinkle in his eye irritating her.

“Shall I send for some ginger root tea?”

She nodded, slipping her dressing gown on as he left. A few minutes after the maid finished helping her dress he returned, fully clothed, with the promised tea. He handed it to her as she sat at the dressing table, watching the maid fix her hair.

He caught her gaze in the mirror as she sipped and grinned, his eyes crinkling in that familiar way which made her think he found the world always amusing. “I hope this one is a girl, blonde and pretty like her mother. Perhaps I shall order a wardrobe full of pink satin gowns with little
pearl flowers along the bodice for her, to remind me of the night I fell in love with her mother.”

Kassie smiled. She would never forget that night as long as she lived.

Once the maid finished dressing her hair, Kassie and Cohen walked hand-in-hand down the stairs to the family dining room. The room was in its usual up roar. Cohen let go of her hand as their son toddled over to them on chubby legs with a lopsided grin.

Lucca held up his arms. “Pa-pa.”

Cohen scooped him up and kissed his forehead. “Guess what, Lucca? You are going to have a baby sister or brother by next summer.”

Emily leaped from her chair beside her new husband, Auggie, and hugged Kassie. “I am so happy for you. I cannot wait to have another baby around to play with.”

Kassie laughed, looking around the room filled with men, women, and children.
This is a family.
She smiled at Cohen. He returned it with one of his own, but his eyes smoldered with intense love and desire.
A cracksman's kiss turned into a love everlasting. This is the happiest day of all my nineteen years.
