Hijra
(Arab.). The ‘emigration’ of
Mu
ammad
from
Mecca
to
Mad
na
in July 622 CE. Those who accompanied him on this move, or who joined him shortly after, were known as
emigrants
(
muh
jir
n
). The hijra marks a stage in Mu
ammad's own development, from a persecuted preacher to the leader of a socio-religious community with political and military power.
The Muslim calendar dates its years (H =
hijr
ya
; AH = After the Hijra, or
Anno Hegirae
in W. usage) from the beginning of the lunar year in which the hijra took place.
