A fantastic creature of Hindu mythology, usually depicted either as a crowned bird or as a bird with a man's head.
In Buddhism, the predatory aspects of Garu
a are emphasized. He is also the vehicle of
Amoghasiddhi
, so that in context garu
a may be a synonym of
buddha
.
Garvey, Marcus Mosiah
(1887–1940).
Leading advocate of black advancement, and a central figure in
Rastafarianism
. He was opposed by the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, but pursued his own line, culminating (1920) in the ‘Declaration of the Human Rights of the Negro People of the World’. After a two-year gaol sentence for fraud, he was deported to Canada in 1924. Taking literally the prophecy in Psalm 68. 31, he affirmed Ethiopia and Africa as the source of civilization.

(Jap.). Placing the palms of the hands together in greeting, understood in Zen Buddhism as the reconciliation of the conflicting forces in the universe, in order to bring about (and invoke) peace and harmony.
