(Lat., ‘discipline of the secret’). The practice of concealing certain rites and doctrines from outsiders. It used to be adduced by Catholic writers to explain the scarcity of early Christian evidences on such subjects as the

One of the
Dead Sea Scrolls
. It contains a description of the customs of the Dead Sea sect including the annual renewal of the
covenant
. This is followed by an explanation of the spiritual status of the sect. The document concludes with three hymns of praise. The
Manual
is thought to date from approximately 150 BCE.
Dispensation

A licence granted by ecclesiastical authority to do some act otherwise canonically illegal or to remit the penalty for breaking such a rule.
Dispensationalism

Millennial
scheme of biblical interpretation. It divides history into seven ‘dispensations’, in which God deals differently, and progressively, with humanity. Dispensationalism is earliest associated with the Plymouth Brother (

), J. N. Darby (1800–82).
