Tibetan Buddhist of Kagyü and Nyingma schools. He was recognized as the eleventh Trungpa Tulku when 1 year old and began training, including

. He escaped to India when the Chinese invaded Tibet, and in 1963 received a Spalding award to study at Oxford. In 1967, he co-founded Samyé-Ling Tibetan Centre in Scotland, and married. Conflict in Scotland meant that in 1970 he left for N. America, where he founded several centres. He also established the Vajradh
tu Association of Buddhist Churches. His autobiography (co-authored) is

(1977), and he wrote many other works mediating Tibetan Buddhism to the West.
