Sengai Gibon
(1751–1837).
Outstanding Zen artist and calligrapher. He became a monk at 11, and went on wandering pilgrimage (
angya
) when 19. He became dharma-successor (
hassu
) of Gessen Zenji, and was appointed abbot of Sh
fuku-ji in 1790. He was noted also for his humorous instruction.
Senge
(Jap., ‘entering transformation’). Zen Buddhist term for death which stresses its transition-nature, and its inherent unimportance.
