(1873–1960) . An influential religious scholar who led the defence of orthodox Islam against the forces of secularism in Turkey. His ambitious project for establishing an Islamic University to reconcile the religious sciences with modern science was thwarted by the government and never realized. Despite official opposition (continual harassment and imprisonment), he produced his greatest work Ris la-i-N r (The Treatise of Light), said to have been written after his Divine Illumination, an attempt to demonstrate the spiritual dimension of the Qur’ n to an age under the sway of scepticism and materialism. Since the recent resurgence of Islam in Turkey, Said Nursi's Ris la-i-N r has played a prominent role in the Islamic revival.
