aram in the early cents. CE. The original is lost, but it continues in at least three different lineages, and in many adaptations or imitations, of which
Hitopade

is the best-known. The stories teach moral and pragmatic lessons for rulers, but they extend beyond that into the realms of entertainment. As a ‘story-book’, it passed into many other cultures and languages.
