Buddhism, founded by
Hui-yüan
in 402 CE, and developed by Mao Tzu-yuan, of the T’ien-t’ai school, in the 12th cent. CE. It was devoted to Amit
bha (
Amida
) but regarded the Pure Land as the attainment of a mental construct and state.
Pai-ma-ssu/Baimasi

White Horse Monastery/Temple, Buddhist monastery and temple near Luoyang in China. It was founded in 75 CE by two Indian monks, Matanga and Chu-fa-len, who arrived on a white horse. It remains a working centre for Ch’an Buddhists.

Monastery of the White Clouds, a Taoist 8th-cent. monastery (
kuan
) in Beijing, rebuilt in 1167. It is the only surviving Taoist temple on this scale in Beijing.
