. The reign of King Josiah was marked by religious renewal. According to the
Aggadah
, Josiah was an example of a truly repentant person (

24) and he was killed by being pierced by 300 arrows (

Josippon

10th-cent. CE Hebrew history of the second

period. Written in Italy, the book starts by listing the nations and ends with the siege of Masada. It was much quoted in medieval Bible and
Talmud
commentaries.
Joss
.
An idol; the word is a pidgin corruption of the Portuguese
deos
, taken back into European languages as a supposed Chinese word. Although it appears in various combinations (e.g. joss-house, a temple), it is most familiar now in ‘joss-stick’, a stick of incense used in temple ceremonies—or simply for its sweet smell.
