Basic Christian practice, the attempt of a disciple to follow the example of the Lord. It is also the title of a widely influential book on the spiritual life attributed to
Thomas
à Kempis (15th cent.).
Imitation of God
.
Jewish way of expressing the human obligation to imitate God in his actions (Deuteronomy 10. 12). The detail is found in Genesis 3. 21, Genesis 18. 1, Leviticus 16. 1, and Deuteronomy 34. 6.
Immaculate Conception
.
The
dogma
that the Blessed Virgin
Mary
was, from the first moment of her being conceived, free from all stain of
original sin
. It and the feast of the conception of the Virgin Mary were a matter of controversy in the West from the 12th cent. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is kept on 8 Dec.
Immanence
(Lat.,
immanere
, ‘to inhabit’). The presence of actions, or of God, in the world, usually in such a way that the source of the action or presence remains distinct. At an extreme, the created order is understood to be the mode of God's self-manifestation, and thus to be the body of God. See also
