CHAPTER ONE

Micha

I
watched my mate, Bliss, from the doorway of the billiards room of my Aunt and Uncle’s home. It was a large room, with windows showing off the backyard garden. A pool table took up residence on one side and a large fireplace with a seating area took up the other.

My two brothers, Dante and Reardon, had arrived before me and seemed to be in an all-out battle of the balls with my mate and cousin, Brass. My mate was dressed in a pair of jeans, holes abounding in the fabric, a black t-shirt that molded to her ample breast but flowed freely downward to her waist. Her black hair was pulled up into a sloppy ponytail and her feet were bare. She was not dressed to meet neither her mate nor the King. She was half human after all, so maybe she thought the rules of propriety didn’t apply to her.

She gave a loud shout when the ball she aimed for went into the corner pocket. She turned, giving Brass a mighty hug. My brothers shook their heads, as they pulled out their wallets, handing over several bills each. She plucked the money from their hands with a big smile on her face. Her brown eyes were alight with mirth.

“Thank you very much boys,” she said huskily as she gave Brass half the money then pocketed the rest.

“She’s going to be a handful, Micha. I’m sorry to say that we’ve indulged her whims over the years.”

I turned to find my Uncle standing not far behind me, with a sad smile on his face. My Aunt was tucked under his arm. She looked like she’d been crying.

I nodded to them. My Aunt Bethell launched herself at me, grabbing hold of my hands. “Please Micha, please. Be good to her. Try to be patient with her. She doesn’t understand our ways. Not truly, not fully. She’s more human than not. Don’t be too harsh with her, please.”

Oh for goodness sake! Did they think I was going to beat the chit? Throw her in the dungeon never to be seen again? For fuck sake, I wasn’t a monster. Yes, I had the reputation of being a hard ass, a dominant, a bit of a bastard, but I was never cruel or an asshole.

“Aunt Bethell, she’s my mate,” I said simply, like that explained everything. It seemed to satisfy her because she smiled, releasing me.

My Uncle Henry gave me a grateful smile as he followed Aunt Bethell into the billiards room. They went up to Bliss, speaking to her softly. Her eyes focused on me from across the room. The laughter and mirth in her eyes died and they became hooded. Her smile thinned out, her teeth worried her bottom lip as she nodded her head. She hugged herself tightly, as her eyes lowered and she continued to nod.

Well fuck, what were they telling her? I shook my head ruefully. I needed to put a stop to it, whatever it was. I didn’t want the girl to be terrified of me. I’d avoided her over the years since my mark had made itself known on her, but my brothers had gotten to know her fairly well and she them, but
I
was her mate. I pulled myself away from the doorframe and made my way across the room. Her head immediately came up as she watched me cross the room. I sensed her pulse quicken as I stopped in front of her.

“Bliss, it’s a pleasure to see you again,” I leaned in to brush her temple with my lips. She smelled good. Of vanilla spice. I wondered absently if her blood would taste the same. When I pulled away, those brown eyes met mine again, then quickly lowered.

“It’s nice to see you as well…Sir,” she added after a slight pause. I couldn’t help but smile.

“Your things arrived safely at the estate today. They have been placed in your room,” I informed her, watching her nibble her bottom lip. Her incisors had barely a point to them.

She nodded. “Thank you. I…”

The slight ring of a bell interrupted whatever she was going to say. It was the indication that dinner was ready in the dining room. My Uncle Henry placed Aunt Bethell’s arm through his and lead the way to the dining room followed by Brass and my brothers.

“May I escort you?” I asked extending my hand to her.

“I know where it is,” she said with slight smile.

I laughed. “I’m sure you do. At any rate, I’d still like to escort you.”

She shrugged, placing her small hand into mine. She sucked in a breath when an electric shock ran up her arm. I closed my much larger hand around hers when she tried to pull away.

“What…what is that?” She asked softly, looking up at me.

I tucked her arm through mine, the electricity still vibrating through us both. “It's what happens when mates touch,” I explained walking to the dining room.

“Will it go away?”

“It will lessen after a spell, but it never really goes away. After I claim you, it will change all together. The sensation will be different. Not quite so off putting. You’ll grow accustomed to it.” I smiled down at her. She was such a short little thing. Probably five-four or so but I stood six-eight so maybe she was of average height for a human.

She sat in the chair I pulled out for her, placing her hands on her lap. I couldn’t not kiss her temple again. I gently placed my lips there for a moment, whispering so only she could hear, “You smell so sweet.”

She turned her head slightly toward me, leaning back in her chair. I felt the slight tremble run through her body. “I…I don’t know what to say,” she whispered back.

I took my seat next to her, taking her hand into mine. There inside her petite, pale right wrist, was the red Celtic dragon that had made itself-known on her twentieth birthday. Way too young to claim. Not that I hadn’t felt the pull to do so. I’d felt it with an intensity I’d never felt before. It had been very hard to stay away from her all these years, waiting for her to mature.

I rubbed my thumb over it, feeling her pulse jump. “You don’t need to say anything, mate.” She smiled up at me gratefully.

We started in on our salads as my brothers, Uncle Henry, and Brass talked football. Aunt Bethell just smiled at them.

“If I remember correctly, Ms. Bliss won $500 off of us that game.” Dante said pointing his fork at Bliss.

Bliss shrugged nonchalantly. “Why would you bet on a player who’d been injured twice in the pre-season and still think he’d be 100% on the third game during the regular season? Too bad, so sad.”

Brass laughed heartily. “You boys will never learn. She has a knack for knowing these things.”

“How the hell did she know that kid during the LSU game wasn’t going to make that thirty-two yard field goal?” Reardon asked heatedly.

“Easy. He’d made every single field goal up to that point, but never one that far. The odds were against him. He never practiced further than twenty feet away so what were the chances he’d make a thirty-two yard goal?” Bliss replied before taking the last bite of her salad.

“She’s a witch!” Dante declared making the sign of the cross. I couldn’t help but laugh at that one. Bliss stuck her tongue at him which won her a reprimand from Bethell.

“Bliss! Really!” Bethell admonished.

Bliss was saved from anymore teasing when the server brought out covered dishes and placed them on the chargers in front of us. As we all removed the covers I heard the slight sigh escape Bliss’ lips. She started in on her potato but didn’t touch the steak on her plate.

I pointed to her steak with my knife. “Don’t like steak?” I asked.

She gave me a tight smile. “I like it just fine, when it’s cooked a little more than the way most vampires eat it.”

We did tend to eat our steak mostly raw. Basically seared on each side and that was it. “Doesn’t the cook make it the way you like it?”

She shook her head. “No, she says she’s not making something separate for a spoiled brat like me. It’s a fight we’ve had a lot over the years. So, she serves it and I just don’t eat it. Typically, I just go to the kitchen later and make a sandwich.”

“Henry and Bethell allow this to happen?”

“Cookie’s been with them for fifty years. They don’t want to ruffle her feathers.”

I took her plate and stood up from the table. I ignored everyone who turned to see what I was about. “Follow me, please,” I instructed Bliss.

She hurriedly got up from the table and followed me through the servant's service quarters to the kitchen. Standing at the large industrial stove was a graying haired woman. When she saw us walk in, she bowed formally, which was appropriate, but wasn’t going to earn her any brownie points.

“So you know who I am,” I said gruffly.

“Of course Sire.”

“Then you know who Bliss is to me, correct?”

“Yes Sire.” She looked like she had just swallowed a lemon.

“Good. Then you will make her a steak she finds palatable, won’t you?”

“As you wish Sire.” Another bow before taking the plate from my hand and turning back to the stove.

I took Bliss’ hand and lead her out of the kitchen. She stopped just outside the door, looking up at me. On tiptoes, she placed her small hands on my shoulders. “Thank you,” she whispered before she placed her soft, silky lips against mine. The electric buzz that was running through us kicked up a notch with the kiss. It had Bliss pulling away quickly.

“Sorry,” she said barely above a whisper. Her eyes were focused on my shoes. I lifted her chin with my forefinger. She was blushing a pretty pink. The buzz in my blood surged when she licked her lips.

“Why are you sorry?” I asked curiously.

She swallowed, hesitating. She licked her lips again. I barely held the groan back. Her lips were naturally plump and ruby red. I wanted to bite into that lower one and suck on it. “Answer me.”

“Mother. She told me not to be so forward, that you would not approve and I should allow you to
make the moves
.” She made air quotes with her fingers. It made me smile. She was just so damn cute.

“I see. Well, you are allowed to kiss me any time you like, deal?” I ran my thumb across her plump lower lip. She smiled happily, her eyes brightening.

I lowered my head, taking her lips with mine. She tasted sweet, like vanilla, just as she smelled. I ran my tongue against hers and she sighed. “Kiss me back sweetheart.”

She pulled away slightly, blushing once again. “I don’t know how,” she whispered shyly.

I pulled her against my body, holding her close. Her breasts crushed against my chest. I pulled her hair out of that sloppy ponytail and buried my hand in its fullness. It was silky soft and luxurious, much like the woman I was holding.

“Just do what feels natural. You can’t do it wrong sweetheart,” I told her just before crushing our mouths together. I immediately went for her tongue and she dueled with mine, coming up on her tiptoes pushing closer to me. I explored her mouth, nipping her lips, licking with small bites.

Our blood was alive, surging, flowing hotly through our bodies. I could feel the pulse in her neck beating heavily against my thumb. I wanted to sink my fangs into that hot vein and pull her essence into me. Just as I was running my tongue to that sweet little beat of her, my Aunt chose that moment to walk through the door.

My Aunt cleared her throat, looking down at the floor. “Was there a problem with the food?”

I pulled away from Bliss slowly. She immediately smoothed her hair and tucked it behind her ears. Her eyes were vibrant, her cheeks flushed with color, her lips swollen from my abuse. It was a good look for her.

“Bliss’ steak wasn’t cooked to her preference. I’ve asked Cookie to redo it.” I took Bliss’ hand in mine and turned her to face my Aunt.

“Oh, well, I’m sure she was happy to do so.” Aunt Bethell was looking Bliss over with a critical eye.

“Indeed,” I replied simply, before leading Bliss back through the door to the dining room. Reardon took one look at Bliss and winked at me. Dante grinned broadly. Apparently my molesting Bliss in the servant’s service quarters was a good sign to my brothers. I rolled my eyes at them, they just grinned broader.

Bliss’ steak was soon delivered to the table and dinner resumed. My Uncle and I discussed the politics of vampire society and some of the issues I was dealing with as King. We also discussed what was being done about the rogue covens that were causing problems not only among the vampires but also to humans, which was very dangerous to our kind.

After dinner we retired to the study for after dinner drinks and Bliss disappeared upstairs. I would give her this time alone before I took her from the home she’d known since she was twelve years old. Brass had found her half dead in an alleyway all those years ago. She’d been attacked by wolves and left for dead. He’d known immediately that she was half vampire. He’d brought her to the vampire clinic and they’d saved her life. Brass’ parents had taken one look at the orphan and claimed her immediately. She’d been their precious daughter ever since.

The thought of the kiss we shared hardened my dick. She was innocent and so damn sweet. I hadn’t had a submissive in a long while and thinking about being able to mold her, train her into the perfect submissive had me anxious to get home and introduce her to our playroom.

When Henry and Bethell had called me to tell me about the mark, I’d cursed fate with giving me another mate. I had a mate a hundred years prior and I’d loved her wholeheartedly. She’d been a wonderful mate, a superb submissive.

Bliss had only been twenty years old, too young to claim, too young to introduce to my lifestyle and definitely too young to introduce to the restrictions and dangers of being the mate to the King of Vampires.
