At any rate, they were until a carriage pulled up in front of his house. He put his finger in the book to save his place and looked out the window. ‘Well, well,’ he said. ‘Sophie,
you’re so impulsive. Some day I will tell our children you proposed to me, because you just couldn’t wait.’

He opened the door and stood there as the coachman helped her soft bulk from the vehicle. From now on that would be his office, and a good one it was, but he was content to watch her from the only slight distance that would ever separate them again.

The coachman unloaded her modest valise, climbed back aboard and tipped his hat to them both. She stood there, looking at him, her hand just naturally resting on her belly. She was obviously well acquainted with their child within. He had some catching up to do. He went down the steps and picked up her valise, then took her arm.

She stood there a moment, looking at the house. ‘Yes, light blue. When will we have lemons? I would like one right now.’

Charles laughed and kissed her cheek. ‘Decided not to stay and help the Brusteins?’

She carefully picked up his left arm and draped it around her shoulder, keeping his hook at a distance. ‘I was miserable as soon as you left and they fired me.’

He shouted with laughter and gathered her close.
