Chapter 19

Olivia sobs silently on the floor as she feels him tie her hands behind her back tightly with a zip tie before he gently wraps her in the sheet from her bed.

“Please don’t kill me.” She begs, her voice soft and almost non-existent as she tries to speak over the lump in her throat.

“Kill you? Sweetheart, I’m not here to kill you. I don’t want to hurt you at all.” He says, leaning down to her. “But your boyfriend needs to agree to work with me. If I have you, then I can make a deal.”

“You have the wrong girl!” She says, lifting her tear stained face off the floor. “I don’t even have a boyfriend. You got the wrong house!”

“Look at me.” He says, roughly grabbing her chin. “I know exactly who you are.”

She gasps, nodding her head up and down as she recognizes the fat man from the office and the party, his balding hair a bit disheveled but his body still stuffed into the same grey suit.

“And I know you know exactly what I’m talking about.” He says, letting her head drop to the floor.

“No.” She says shaking her head. “I don’t know anything, I promise. I don’t even remember your name! So if you leave, please! Please, I won’t say anything!”

She wails out, her heart sinking as she hears her cellphone ring on top of her bedside table.

“Please!” She begs as she watches him walk over and pick up her phone.

“Oh! You don’t know anything, right?” He says, waving his gun in the air as he walks back over to her and faces her phone’s screen in her face. “You don’t know anything, and that’s why you’re getting a call right now from Vincent Condello, right?”

“He’s just my boss. I just work there. I hardly know him.” She sobs, recoiling as he throws her phone at her, hitting her in the shoulder.

“You listen to me, sweetheart.” He says, walking over to her before kneeling down in front of her. “But you’re going to have to forgive me if I don’t believe that a man who owns half the fucking city is going to bring his plant watering girl to a fucking mob party!” He yells, spitting on her as he voice raises louder and louder.

He grabs her by the shoulder, lifting her up off the ground before tossing her onto her bed.

“You understand how that doesn’t make sense!?” He screams, walking over to her phone on the ground before picking it up and turning on the screen as he steps back over to her.

She nods her head, desperately trying to cover herself back up with the sheet as it falls off her shoulder.

“Now,” He says, ripping the zip-tie around her wrist with a pocket knife before handing her the phone. “You have 30 seconds to get him on the phone or I blow your face off.”

Her hands tremble as she nods her head up and down, the tears flowing down her cheeks as she tries to punch in Vincent’s number.

She drops her phone onto her lap as she feels him press the barrel of the gun against her temple once more, before pushing it into her face as he reaches down to pick up the phone again, forcefully putting it into her hand.

“Get him here… NOW!” He screams at her as she brings the ringing phone up to her ear.

She takes a deep shaking breath as she counts the seconds listening to the phone ring.

“He’s not answering…” She sobs, her tired eyes looking up at the man as he slowly drags the gun across her face to rest it in between her eyes. “He’ll call me back. I know he’ll call me back! We just have to wait a little bit… Please, let’s just wait! And then I’ll make him do whatever you want, please, I promise!”

“FUCK!” He huffs, slapping the back of his hand hard across her face as he yells.

She cries, holding her hands over her mouth to hold in the sobs as he paces back and forth around her room.

Her heart stops as she hears her front door bell ring.

“Don’t you make a fucking sound.” He whispers to her harshly, as he walks over to the window and peeks outside. “Get up and get dressed.” He says, turning back to her and pointing the gun in her direction. “We got company.”

Chapter 20

“You’re going to need to move a little faster than this, sweetheart.” He says, poking the barrel of the gun into her back as he pushes her out of her room and down the hallway.

She nods her head up and down, trying to hurry down the stairs on her shaking legs as she buttons up her cardigan.

“I’m trying, I’m trying.” She says, wiping away her tears as she tries her best to swallow the lump in her throat.

“Let him in.” He says, backing up out of the foyer into the living room, the barrel of his gun locked on her. “And if you say anything… ANYTHING at all about me at all I will not hesitate to shoot you dead.”

She nods her head up and down, the lump in her throat returning.

“Get him inside. Shut and lock the door behind him. Do NOT say a word!” He continues, motioning with his gun towards the door.

Olivia wipes her eyes one last time before unlocking the deadbolt on her front door. She wraps her trembling fingers around the knob, turning it nervously before pushing on it to open her heavy front door.

“Olivia…” Vincent whispers, reaching up to wipe away her tears with his thumb.

She sniffs, her eyes welling even further as she hesitates before stepping backwards out of the doorway to let him inside.

“We have to talk, Olivia…” He says, walking into her foyer as she closes the door and turns the deadbolt. “I can’t just leave last night like it was…”

She bursts, her bravery waving as she lets out a sob when she sees the fat gunman walk into the foyer with them.

“I’m so sorry.” She whispers. “I’m so, so sorry…”

Vincent takes a heavy breath, his eyebrows furrowing as he turns his head toward the intruder.

“Tabone.” He says, lifting his head up coyly as he turns his shoulders towards him.

“Time to get this deal done, Vincent Condello.” He says deeply as he lifts his gun toward him. “I’m sure we’ll be able to work something out.”

Chapter 21

Vincent lifts his hands into the air, narrowing his eyes as he clenches his jaw before shaking his head.

“Joe Tabone.” Vincent says. “What are you doing here, Joe?”

The fat man shakes his gun in the air, his face reddening as his panic grows.

“Everybody get into the living room!” He shouts, quickly walking over to them, pointing the gun to their backs as he pushes them forward. “Or else I kill your little girlfriend over here!”

“This? This is your plan?” Vincent says, chuckling as they walk into the living room. “If you think a hostage situation is going to get you a slice of my pie, you’re mistaken.”

“I bet you’d do a lot to save this pretty girl, though, wouldn’t you Mr. Condello?” Joe says, dragging the barrel of the gun across Olivia’s cheek. “You wouldn’t want to see anything happen to her, right?”

Vincent bites his bottom lip, his eyes darkening before he breathes out a heavy chuckle.

“Her?” He says, his eyes gazing toward Olivia. “I don’t care about what happens to her. I came here to fire her for not coming into work this morning.”

“I’ve seen you two together!” The fat man wails as he pushes Olivia to the ground.

She crumples, covering her mouth to quiet her sobs as she looks towards Vincent.

His chest heaves as he fights the urge to run over to her.

“Here, I can prove it.” He says, slowly lowering his hand and reaching into his jacket pocket before gingerly pulling out the contract. “Her contract. You’ve kidnapped my cleaning lady. And not even one of the good ones, but the one I was here to fire…”

“Let me see that!” Joe says, lunging towards Vincent to grab the contract.

“Sure.” Vincent says coyly, tossing the document to the ground beside the fat man’s feet.

He watches as the papers flutter to the ground before he grunts in frustration as he bends over to pick them up

“Yeah, see, right there.” Vincent says, wasting no time before quickly and swiftly kicking the tip of his polished shoe into the man’s shoulder, knocking him to the ground.

Vincent drops to the ground, straddling the man and pinning him as he tries to roll over onto his back. He grits his teeth as he struggles to pull the gun out of Joe’s fingers before turning it on him and pressing the barrel firmly into the side of his temple.

“So you wanna be a gangster, huh?” Vincent screams, only inches from his face, spraying him with spit. “You want to play with the big boys, do ya?”

Vincent groans in frustration as Joe lays under him shaking his head as he lifts his hand up high into the air before striking it down against the bridge of that fat man’s nose.

“ANSWER ME!” Vincent screams, shoving the gun into Joes temple hard, knocking his head around.

“Look, look!” Joes starts, his voice quivering as he speaks. “I made a mistake, I made a mistake! I’m obviously in over my head! I don’t know what I was thinking!”

“You think you could handle even a fraction of what I do?” Vincent asks, his voice breaking as he squeezes the guy’s neck. “And you want
me
to pay
you
for your tiny little area that you obviously can’t even
handle
?!”

“No sir, no sir!” Joe cries, shaking his head. “Please, please, you’ll never see me again, I swear!”

“You better believe I’ll never see you again…” Vincent says, sliding the barrel of the gun across the man’s face to the center of his forehead. “I will
never
see you again, do you understand me?” He says, leaning down to whisper into the man’s ear.

Vincent sits up, pulling the gun away from the man’s face before pulling the hammer and cocking the gun.

“No! Vincent, no!” Olivia screams, closing her eyes as she watches him press the gun against the man’s hand.

“Never, do you hear me?!” Vincent says before pulling the trigger.

Olivia screams, the gunshot momentarily deafening her as she squeezes her eyes, before the ringing in her ears turns into the blood curdling screams of the man Vincent just shot, sending a shiver down her spine.

She opens her eyes, the room spinning around her as she watches Vincent get up off of the man as blood pools around them. He empties the remaining bullets from the gun and drops them into his pocket before tossing it at the man as he rolls over onto his knees, nursing his torn apart hand against his chest.

He walks around the pooled blood, squatting down to kneel in front of Joe before grabbing the screaming man by the chin and pulling it up.

“I think we’ve reached our understanding, don’t you?” Vincent says to him, before pushing him back over.

He stands up, kicking him in the side before walking over to the front door and opening it.

“Get. Out.” He says forcefully as they watch the man scramble to his feet before running out the door, leaving his gun to soak in the pool of blood on Olivia’s hardwood floors.

Chapter 22

Vincent walks over to Olivia and drops to his knees beside her before wrapping his arms around her and brushing his trembling fingers through her hair as he lets out a shaking breath.

She sobs, unable to hold back her tears any longer as she buries her face into his shoulder, the smell of his must calming her before she pushes him away.

“Get away from me!” She screams. “You shot someone in my house! Get away!”

“Olivia, I did what I had to do.” He whispers to her, glancing back behind him at the pool of crimson before reaching out for her again.

She stands up, pushing him away once more.

“You came here to fire me!” She sobs, pointing towards the loose pile of papers on the floor. “None of this would have ever happened if you just left me alone in the first place!”

“Olivia, please!” He begs, pulling her back down onto his lap. “Not at all, please, just listen to me.”

She cries, leaning back into him as she squeezes her eyes shut.

“You brought it with you and everything.” She whispers.

“To rip up.” He says, his voice cracking. “To rip up, Olivia. I don’t want a contract anymore.”

She looks up at him, her tears magnifying her blue eyes as she listens to him speak.

“I’m a bad guy, Olivia. I get it… I mean, look at what I fucking just did…” He says, burying his nose into her hair. “But I don’t want a disgusting contract like this with you.”

“So then what do you want?” She asks, spiting back at him angrily, her body too exhausted to pull away.

“I want you.” He whispers to her.

“What do you want from me?” She whispers back.

“Just you.” He says, cradling her. “No contract. No obligation… just you… just us…”

He grabs her hand, gently rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand as he speaks.

“Please, Olivia.” He says, hanging his head as he sighs out. “I can’t promise you I am going to magically be a good person, in fact, I know I’m not going to be.” He whispers embarrassedly. “But from the moment I first saw you, I knew I needed you… from the very first second, and I’m not going to let you go.”

Olivia reaches up to Vincent’s face before slowly brushing her hand against his cheek to wipe away his falling tears before wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him close to her.

“I know there’s nothing I can ever do for you that will make up for this…” He starts.

Olivia smiles, hiccupping out a small chuckle as she sniffs.

“Well, you can start by making us some breakfast.” She whispers. “I hear you’re pretty good at that.”
