“I thought you understood how I felt. I thought you were my friend,” she whispered, then turned and ran from the room.

“Damn,” Parker said under his breath before rushing after her.

“Let her go.” Markham waved a dismissive hand. “She can run all she wants, but it won’t change a bloody thing. The two of you will be married post-haste.”

Parker halted in midstride. Whirling on the duke, his anger erupted. “In case you hadn’t heard, the lady said no.” He lowered his voice, but no one in the room could miss the cold fury in the next words. “And because there seems to be some confusion, let me make myself perfectly clear. I’ll not force her.”

~~

When he left the library, Lucas and Markham eyed each other with curious glances.

Lucas grinned. “Two hundred pounds says he can get her to the altar without forcing her.”

“You’re on.” The duke held out a hand, chuckling. “If he gets that stubborn bit of baggage to the altar without force, it’ll be worth every pound.”

Chapter 2
5

Parker looked everywhere for Penny. He was just about to give up when he came out of the house in time to catch her riding off at a good clip. Based on the direction in which she rode, he had a good idea of where she’d gone. Smiling, he rushed to the stable to saddle his stallion.

In a matter of minutes, he galloped after her.

He cleared the bend in the road that led to his bluff and saw her sitting on the rock looking out over the water, tears streaming down her face.

He swallowed hard as a knot in his stomach tightened. After dismounting, he stepped quietly up to the rock and stood behind her without speaking.

As if sensing his presence, she said, “I wish people would listen to me and quit trying to decide my future.”

Parker moved to sit next to her.

“I know.” He stared out at the water.

Several ships dotted the ocean on this cloudy afternoon. The biting breeze seemed to go right through him, but he paid it no heed. After watching the scenery below for some time, his gaze sought her face.

“But I am curious. I’m wondering why you don’t marry Geoff, when it’s obvious you love him.”

His whispered words carried on the wind, and he wasn’t sure she heard him because she sat silent for too long before she shrugged. “That’s precisely why I can’t marry him.”

When Parker’s expression turned questioning, Penny smiled wanly and shook her head very slowly. “He deserves someone who loves him enough not to lie with another.”

Too much sorrow was in her voice. Parker didn’t like it that he, or rather their shared passion, had brought about such unhappiness. He couldn’t peer into her eyes anymore, knowing he’d put that sadness there. His gaze wandered over the water once again and his voice was still low when he spoke. “I know he loves you. He’ll get over it.”

“It would come between us eventually,” she said, sighing. “He’s always loved me. But I don’t think he’s ever known me. I think he loves the innocent girl I was at one time. I’m no longer that girl.”

For quite a while they both stayed silent, taking in the view.

“So your mind is set then?” He glanced back at her face, searching.

“Yes.” Penny nodded. “I know what I want.”

Her chin rose defiantly and Parker bit back a smile at the stubbornness lurking in her expression.

“I don’t mean to change your mind, just present another offer.”

That got her attention. She peered at him expectantly, curiosity concerning his offer reflecting in her eyes as the wind whipped strands that had come loose from her tight bun.

“Markham tells me this earl is a very dangerous man. I know you don’t want to be controlled by any man, especially one like me. But you need protection.” His grin appeared when she stiffened. Her expression closed as her eyes reconnected with the water. He placed his thumb and forefinger under her chin, forcing her gaze back to his. “Penny, you know it’s the truth. Life for a woman without the protection of a man is hard.” When she tried to yank away, he tightened his hold. “Answer me this. If he finds you in California, will you be safe on your own? Will he be a threat?”

His meaning set in as fear streaked through her beautiful features, marring them. Penny sucked in a deep breath and let it out. “I am afraid of him. He’s evil and he most likely won’t stop.”

“If you won’t marry Geoff, marry me. I’ll take you to California. I’ll even stay with you for several months, ensuring your safety, giving you the protection of my name. When I return here, you’ll have the choice of staying or coming back with me. I’ll not force you to do anything you don’t want to do. I promise.”

“And what if I’m with child?” she asked, wringing her hands nervously. “What then?”

Parker sobered. Releasing her eyes, he lowered his gaze to her lips, “Are you?”

“I don’t know.”

Her voice hung in the air, wrapping around Parker’s soul, making him wish for things he shouldn’t. That she could even imagine leaving under such circumstances left him shaken. That it gave him a promise of tomorrow with her left him even more shaken.

“You weren’t thinking of leaving here, if you were?” he asked as she cast her gaze at the ground and shrugged, her motions indicating it was exactly what she was thinking. “You can’t think to keep my child from me? Not after all we’ve been through?”

He expelled a lengthy breath and stared at the water. When he finally spoke, his words were just above a whisper. “A child would change our agreement and I’d expect you to return with me.” His focus landed on her face, remaining until she eventually looked up. “I’ll abide by your wishes, and try not to control you, but that’s non-negotiable.”

Penny lapsed into silence. Her attention moved back to the horizon and she seemed lost in thought.

“Well?” He smiled when she jumped. “Have we an agreement?”

Her grimace was quick as she glanced at him. “I’m still thinking.” Her cheeks turned a pretty shade of pink as she asked, “What about—you know?”

Parker’s eyebrows shot up. “You know?” A sly grin slid over his expression.

“You know what I’m talking about.”

He chuckled as more red stole up her face. “Have I ever forced you?”

She closed her eyes and shook her head.

“The
you know
will be up to you,” he said. “Just so there are no misunderstandings, I want to clarify this in the beginning. If a child results from your decision, you and I are bound for life. Are we clear?” He waited until she nodded slightly before adding, “And if that happens and I can’t have your love, I’ll require your loyalty and fidelity.”

“You’d settle for loyalty and fidelity because you don’t believe in love?” she said, watching his expression.

He nodded. “I’d not ask for something I couldn’t give.”

“I see,” she replied, nodding slowly. “Then I guess I’d be a fool to turn it down. What choice do I have with a monster on my
heels.”

Although Penny said this with a smile, Parker caught the sadness in her eyes and it sent a small pang of regret through his system. Pushing the feeling away, he smiled and wrapped his arms around her, bringing her closer.

“We should seal our bargain with a kiss, don’t you think?” he whispered just before his lips found hers.

Their kisses usually turned hot and heated quickly, but Parker kept this kiss gentle and loving. When he pulled away and looked upon her lovely face, his breath caught in his throat. God in heaven, she was the most beautiful woman he’d ever known, and he understood at that moment, he’d promise anything to keep her by his side. He’d probably burn in hell for coercing her, as well as praying for a child, but he’d never been able to resist the temptation of having her and he was tired of fighting it. Holding on to some semblance of control, he released her and straightened.

“We should marry as soon as possible,” he said, clearing his throat. “I’ll take care of the arrangements. Is that agreeable?”

Penny nodded.

Parker stood, offering his hand. She took it, and he led her to the horses, helping her mount.

Neither spoke during the ride back to his house.

Penny’s thoughts were on her impending marriage. So much had happened in the last three months. Marrying Parker might be a huge mistake, but she had to face the truth. The idea left her giddy with relief. Secretly keeping her focus on Parker’s hands holding the reins as he competently rode the stallion along the trail, she swallowed hard. How she wished to have those hands on her and that desire disturbed her. If somehow she avoided being with child now, it would be only a matter of time before it happened in actuality. Then she’d be bound to him for life.

Searching his implacable expression, she wondered. Would she be able to handle living with him as his wife and loving him as she did without his love if he couldn’t return the sentiment?

Eventually they made it back to the house. They entered the main hall and all but Catherine were present in the library, as if waiting for news of their encounter.

“Seems nothing is private around here,” Penny said, noticing their curious expressions. Except for Geoff’s. He sat in surly silence without making eye contact. Guilt rolled over her and she looked at Parker, who offered an encouraging smile.

Elizabeth laughed. “Of course nothing is private. This is the Davis family, after all.” She rushed over to Penny, wrapped an arm around her, and led her farther into the room. “So tell us! What have you decided?”

“Mother, gloating doesn’t become you.” Parker headed toward the bar, then glanced at the three men sitting. “Would any of you like something? Lucas? Markham? Geoff? I’m having one.”

“Pour one for each of us,” Lucas said. “And please don’t keep us in suspense. Are we celebrating or commiserating?”

“It’s all a matter of perception. I for one am celebrating, but I’m not so sure about Geoff.” Parker lined up glasses and picked up the decanter of bourbon. “Penny and I will be married as soon as I can arrange it.”

Geoff’s gaze went to the floor. “I can’t say that I’m happy but I accept your news.” Geoff’s attention moved to Penny, and his expression softened. “Congratulations are in order. I do wish you happiness, Penny.” He then turned to Parker. “You seem successful in dealing with her and I think you’ll keep her safe. You damned well better or you’ll have me to deal with.”

Parker grunted an assent. “I’ll take care of her. I promise,” he said sincerely, drawing Penny’s gaze. He glanced first at her and then his mother. “How about you two? Would you like something so we can toast to a happy union?”

~~

As promised, Parker had made arrangements for the wedding. Though the church pastor was none too happy about the participants wanting a hurried affair, a large donation had him bending his rules on announcing the banns. He arranged for their wedding to take place the following Saturday, telling Penny and Parker that, at the very least, the couple seemed very much in love.

Hours seemed like seconds, and before Penny knew it, Catherine and Elizabeth helped her dress on the big day.

“Don’t you look lovely.” Elizabeth’s eyes misted with tears. “I’m happy you chose to join our family.”

Penny nodded. “I’m proud to be part of it.” She loved both women. Catherine was like a sister, as close as Mindy ever was, and she’d come to view Elizabeth as a surrogate mother, as warm and caring as her own mother had been.

“You do look lovely. Look at how the sapphires bring out your eyes, Penny,” Catherine said, her voice filled with awe. She’d just finished clasping the necklace around Penny’s neck and stepped back. “Parker knew what he was about when he bought them for you. He also has excellent taste in gowns. The color of this dress with its hint of blue is perfect with those jewels.”

“This gown is exquisite.” Penny smiled wistfully, looking down and fingering the soft ice-blue silk folds. The material hung in an elegant gather from the waist, below the form-fitting bodice. “It seems like a dream.”

Her gaze went back to the cheval glass and she caught her expression. Her earrings danced as she turned her head this way and that, looking for imperfections. Though she appeared serene, disturbing thoughts filled her mind.

“It’s no dream, child. Just reality,” Elizabeth said, gripping her shoulders. “And you are the one who is exquisite. You make a beautiful bride, with or without sapphires or expensive gowns.”

Penny tried to see what Parker would see when she walked down the aisle. Was she pretty enough to hold his attention? Would marrying him give her the one thing she prayed for daily—his love? Or would he become bored with her over time and look for another as so many men of her class did? Though Parker expected loyalty and fidelity from Penny, and promised Penny the same, she didn’t expect it. Not when the last year had taught her that few men were like her father.

How quickly her worries had changed over these past months, she mused. The memory of her guardian became a distant irritation. Concern over how she’d survive mating with Parker night after night, having his body but not his mind and soul, weighed heavily upon her heart. With or without the child she felt sure grew inside her womb because of that day on Parker’s bluff, she sensed the two of them would be forever connected. She didn’t know if she was strong enough to endure a loveless marriage, but she couldn’t leave. Not when she’d determined the truth of never truly meaning to carry out her
plans, the temptation of having him—even without what she yearned for—too intense. She simply loved being with him. Craved the passion they’d shared. At this point, she couldn’t imagine not marrying him, and she’d grown weary of pretending otherwise.

“Let’s get this veil on and then you’ll be ready.” Elizabeth slipped the headpiece over her head and stepped back, her face showing visible joy. She sniffed and wiped her eyes.
“Oh, my! You’re breathtaking. Leave it to Parker to pick the one perfect bride for him.”

“He’s only marrying me out of honor.” Penny couldn’t believe otherwise. Though she hadn’t told Parker about the child yet, she knew the news would make him feel even more honor bound. “He’s only protecting me.”

Elizabeth gave an indelicate snort. “If you think that, you don’t know him very well. Parker has always had a way of twisting situations to work for him. I’m sure this is no different.” She fussed a little more with Penny’s veil. “No. I’ve seen the way he looks at you. You’re the woman he wants and it’s clear he means to have you.”
