“Oh is that so?” He asked. “I thought you didn’t like ‘perverts’?”

“I was lying! Don’t try to back out now. I’ve been thinking about this for the last three hours.” I turned and poked him in the chest.

“Baby, you don’t have to beg me to do naughty things to you. Ever” he whispered, opening the car door for me. I hoped his hotel wasn’t far away.

“Good.” I leaned in and pecked him quickly, while attempting to balance the plate of cake in my hand.

Fortunately, it wasn’t.

Two hours later, I cuddled into Logan’s bare chest, wrung out and completely satisfied. We were both sticky and I wanted to take a shower.

“I must say, that was the best cake I’ve ever had,” he joked, softly caressing my hair. I had cake in areas that no person should ever have cake. Logan did things to my body that made last night’s make up session feel like a practice run. Logan was beyond good in bed.

I really was a very,
very
lucky girl.

“I’m glad you enjoyed your dessert,” I giggled. “So when are you going back to DC?”

“When are you leaving LA?”

I turned onto my stomach and faced him. “I have a one way ticket. I don’t have any reason to rush back since I don’t have a job.” My attention had been diverted from reality for the last couple days. Looking for a new job was going to suck.

“What happened with that? Alex gave me a brief version, but I’m sure there’s more to it.” Logan ran his hand down my bare back making me squirm. “I was shocked when I went to Copple for a meeting and found out you weren’t working there anymore.”

“Trent happened. He found out about me and you.” I could see the look of guilt in Logan’s eyes. “Don’t feel guilty. We both knew there was a
possibility of me getting caught. It wasn’t like you got me fired Logan.”

“Then why aren’t you there anymore?”

“I quit when Trent accused me of trying to sleep my way to the top.”

I felt Logan’s fingers tense. “He’s an idiot.”

“That isn’t news. And let’s face it, I wasn’t happy there anyway. It was just a paycheck.” I felt the need to downplay the situation. None of this was his fault and I didn’t like the look he had in his eye.

“Don’t make any decisions with Copple based on what I just told you,” I said.

“Too late, I didn’t like that asshat anyway.” I couldn’t hide the smirk that appeared across my lips. I knew how badly Trent wanted Logan’s business. Too bad he wasn’t going to get it. Karma truly was a bitch, and Trent deserved whatever else came his way.

“I suppose I should go ahead and get back, though” I said. “I need to get my job hunt started sooner rather than later.”

“Do you think you can you spare an extra day or two on the west coast before heading back?” Logan’s tone was serious. The entire mood of our conversation shifted.

“I don’t see why not. What do you need?” I asked, adjusting the sheet over my shoulders.

“I want you to go with me—” he stopped talking and blew out a low breath.

“Babe? Where do you want me to go with you?” I looked up into Logan’s green eyes waiting for him to finish his sentence. Sadness laced his features.

“To San Francisco. I want to go visit my grandparents. It wouldn’t seem right to be on the west coast and not visit their gravesite. I’m really the only one that makes an effort to go see them anymore.”

I was speechless for a few seconds before finding my tongue and using my words. “Logan, of course I’ll go with you.” For once, I could be there for him. I
needed
to be there for him. He could’ve asked anyone to share this moment with him, to help him move through the eternal guilt he felt, but he asked me and I’d be damned if I wasn’t going to be there. Logan was my second chance at happiness. Whatever he needed from me, I’d do it.

“When do you want to leave?” I asked.

“Would Monday work for you? I’ll take care of the arrangements.”

“I think that’s doable. I just need to say goodbye to everyone tomorrow.”

Just then Logan’s cell phone went off. He rolled away from me and reached for his phone.

“I think it’s for you.” He handed me his cell.

“For me?” Now I was really confused.

“Yeah, it’s Alex” he said with a smile. Oh crap! I never called her back! I had been so wrapped up in Logan, I completely forgot about the fact that I had to buy a new phone.

That spoke volumes to how depressed I was. I mean, who the hell can live without their phone these days?

“Hello?” I answered.

“Well look who it is!” Alex chirped. “I take it you guys made up. But I can’t even get a phone call or text? Damn, that hurts.”

“I know. Sorry. I’ve been swamped. My
mom decided to throw my dad a party for his birthday—and you know how my mom gets. Plus, my phone and a glass of water got into a fight.”

“Let me guess,” Alex supplied. “The water won.”
“Bingo.”

“Still not an excuse, B. That’s why God invented email. But whatever. I guess I can forgive you, since I assume you’ve been
busy
.” I could totally see her winking at me over the phone line. I shook my head at her not so subtle comment.

Logan climbed from the bed and pointed towards the bathroom, mouthing the word
shower
. I nodded and watched him as he made his way across the suite. I nearly burst out into laughter when I noticed orange icing from my dad’s cake smeared across his backside and in his hair. Things had gotten pretty wild with the cake. When he was safely out of ear shot, I turned my attention back to Alex.

“Yeah, I’ve been
busy
. And I guess I have you to thank for that, don’t I?”

“Someone has to save you from yourself.”

“You did, and I really appreciate it. I’ll never doubt you again, honorable relationship guru.”

“That’s right, and don’t you forget it. On a more serious note, when are you coming back? Jay is teetering on my last nerve.” I doubted Jay was really bothering her, but she’d use any excuse to get me back faster.

“What did he do now?” I asked.

“Oh nothing…you know—just breathing.” God I loved Alex. She was freaking ridiculous.

“So him breathing in your personal space is too much for you to handle?”

Everything
is too much to handle when I don’t have my bestie...duh.”

“Laying it on a little thick, aren’t you?”

“Is it working?” she laughed.

I giggled. “Not really. Logan just asked me to go to San Francisco with him before heading back to DC, so I guess I’ll be back in town next week sometime. Have no fear, you’ll have your best friend back soon.”

“Good! Now to the even more important stuff: what happened with you and Logan? I’m taking the fact that you answered his cell phone as a good sign.” I could hear the utter glee in her voice.

“Things are great, Alex. Really great. He told me everything, and luckily I was wise enough to pull my head out of my butt so that I heard it all. I’m just thankful that he forgave me for being so…I don’t know…untrusting.”

“Thank god for that! When he told me the baby wasn’t his, I tried to call and tell you, but I kept getting your voicemail. I didn’t think that was something I should send over text message.”

“I appreciate it. I’m glad I got to hear it from him, though.”

“Me, too. He loves you Brooklyn.” Her voice took on a more serious tone.

“He does. And I love him. I didn’t know I could feel like this about another person in such a short time. It wasn’t like this with Damon. I haven’t felt like this in a long time. I hated being away from Logan.
Hated
it.” I sighed into the phone. At least I didn’t have to find out what would have happened if he hadn’t come after me.

“Well, I’m glad you two found your way back to each other without needing a flash light and a map,” she joked.

“Me too, Alex. Me too.”

“Now hurry up and find your way back to D.C!” We both laughed.

Logan

As I waited for the shower to heat up, I wondered how Brooklyn would react to going to the grave site of my grandparents. I wanted them to be as important to her as they were to me because that day was what shaped me into the man I am now. I guess that’s why I came after her. I know how quickly life can be yanked away when you least expect it. She may have been willing to muddle around knowing that she missed me as much as I missed her, but I wasn’t willing to sacrifice days, weeks, or months waiting for her to come to her senses on her own. I sure as hell wouldn’t have cake shoved up my ass at the moment had I let her have her way. I chuckled lightly at the thought.

The last couple days, all of my energy had been focused on getting Brooklyn to talk to me; to
believe
me. It was a welcomed distraction really. It gave me an opportunity to not focus on the call I’d received from my grandfather’s lawyer, requesting I take ownership of my part of the inheritance my grandparents left me. Up until this point, I had managed to refuse the money, but lately his lawyer was becoming a little pushier. Apparently there was a statute of limitations on how long the money could be held without being claimed. The money was supposed to be split between the three grandchildren, but Scott and Laura refused to claim their shares, if I wouldn’t take mine. None of us needed the money really. We’d all actually done very well for ourselves. Personally, I really wanted the money to go to good use, and I didn’t think it would serve any purpose sitting in another unnecessary bank account. I was toying with the idea of donating my portion to the charity. Regardless, I’d need to make a decision about it soon.

I climbed into the shower and immersed myself in the billowing steam. As I washed all the remnants of icing from my body, Brooklyn’s high pitched laugh broke through the sound of the water hitting the tile. Making her laugh did something to me. It made that ever-present tension in my chest ease. As usual, my thoughts quickly turned sentimental and I grinned to myself.

Now that I was all clean, it was time her for her to be too.

Brooklyn

The door to the bathroom creaked and I turned to see Logan’s dripping wet body leaning against the door frame, steam passing over his head. I let my eyes rove over every inch of his chiseled body before picking my jaw up off the floor. Logan’s eyes burned into mine as we stared at each other.
