“You might like the silence, but I think we need more noise. Like, say, the sound of our child’s laughter.”
Regret filled him, and he crushed her tight to his chest. “That is the one thing I can’t give you, little one. I’m sorry.”
“So you’ve said.” She whispered and pressed a kiss to the underside of his chin. “But, oh great and glorious commander of the last Company of Guardians, you happen to be wrong. I’m with child.”
Gwyn held her breath as she waited for Vamir to grasp what she’d said. One minute he held her tight, and the next he lifted high into the air.
“Say that again,” he demanded, grinning from ear to ear.
“You’re wrong.”
“Not that part, woman. The other bit.”
“I’m pregnant, Vamir.”
He carried her back into their quarters, holding her tenderly. “You’re sure?”
“I’m sure.” She’d sensed it upon waking that morning, a bond as real as the one she shared with Vamir, only this one was far more delicate. The fates had given her everything she’d ever dreamed of and some things she’d never dared to hope for.
“How?” he demanded.
“I would have thought that would be obvious,” she teased. “The only reason you thought you couldn’t have children was because you believed you would never find your soulmate. I’m here, Vamir. So it makes sense that we could have a child. We just never realized it.”
“I’m going to be a father. Truly?” He beamed at her. “You will be the most amazing mother,” he whispered, covering her face in tender kisses as he sat down on the edge of their bed.
“I have no idea how to be a mother, but I suppose I’m going to learn. And if this child takes after their father and can sprout wings at will, we’re going to need to start keeping the doors and windows locked around here.”
He groaned and shook his head. “Wings aren’t what I’m worried about. Garda can’t shift forms until we reach puberty. I’m more concerned the little one is going to take after their mother. According to Ak and Az, you were summoning tiny dragons as playmates by the time you were five!”
“They were fire drakes, not dragons,” she corrected him with a grin. “Dragons are fifty feet long with fangs as big as fence posts. Fire drakes are the size of a kitten, and about as dangerous.”
She wrapped her arms around her lover’s neck and kissed him, joy suffusing every cell of her being and making her feel as if she were filled with sunlight. After years of living in shadow, it was the greatest feeling in the world.
No matter what the future held for them, Gwyneth knew this was where she was always fated to be, standing in the light with her soulbound, fighting for the day they could all finally go home.
After all, whether Vamir wanted to admit it or not, they had a prophecy to fulfill.
