Chapter Fifty-Five

Wise

I sat in the backseat, chilling, as Carter drove us to some spot on the Eastside. It was inside of an older subdivision with big ass houses. As I stared out the window, I wondered where he was taking us, because I didn’t know shit about the Eastside.

“Yo’ where we going?” I finally spoke up. Knowing Carter’s crazy ass, I needed to be prepared in case some shit popped off.

“To holla at a friend about a few things. I got a few people with their ears to the streets.” He answered, looking at me through the rear view mirror, then looking back at the road.

I just nodded my head and sat back. I had a lot on my plate already, plus tomorrow was the day of that punk ass nigga Jabari’s wake. So I knew that I had to mentally prepare myself to be there for Milan. I thought about what Adonnis said about his homeboy claiming that Milan was the cause of Jabari’s death. I hoped that they wasn’t on no bullshit and I didn’t have to fuck up the funeral home. A part of me didn’t even want to let her go. But, I knew she needed that closure, so I wasn’t tripping.

We pulled into the driveway of a two-story brick house, and threw the car in park. My phone rang with a call from Milan, but I ignored it, sending her to voicemail. I’d call her back after we left Carter’s friend’s house. We made our way to the porch, and when the door swung open, and a fly ass yellowbone chick answered, I looked at Carter, wondering who she was.
With the way that she jumped into his arms and wrapped herself around his neck, I knew that she had to be one of the little broads he used to mess with. I took her in, she had the sickest shape, and her little swag was definitely Carter’s speed.

After releasing herself from the embrace, she turned to me waving.   “Hey Carter’s brother. You look just like him.” She chuckled, then she turned to Adonnis rolling her eyes. “Hello to you too, Don. What, you can’t speak, nigga?”

Adonnis face tightened. “Man, fuck you. I’m sitting in the ma’fucking car.”

By now, I was confused as hell, as I watched Adonnis trudge to the car. Carter was cracking up, laughing.
“What the fuck wrong with him?” I asked.

Carter stopped laughing for a second. “That nigga mad because Mellisa played his ass. I told him not to fuck with her, but he wouldn’t listen. Tell him Lissa. Them Bama ass Southern niggas ain’t ready for a D girl.”

Lissa kissed her teeth. “Boy bye, I didn’t do nothing to that man. He was throwing money at me like it was nothing and I took the shit. I never promised him no pussy, or anything else in return.” She shrugged her shoulders and led us into the living room.

“So what’s up, Carter? The last time I saw you was when me and the girls vacationed in your city. What’s the deal?”

“Man, I know your nosey ass stay getting the scoop on what’s happening in the streets. What’s the word?” Carter asked, getting to the point.

“Hmmm, a lot. First, word around town is that you and your brother had that Jabari dude killed. You know he was from my hood and his people supposedly put money on y’all head. But, I already know that your crazy ass can hold your own. Then, I’m hearing that some people are mad that you’re back in the city, don’t ask me who. I couldn’t get all that info without seeming suspicious.” She looked me up and down and gave me a funny look. “And I hear that ya’ baby momma on some fuck shit, if that’s even your baby… watch her ass.”

My baby momma? I knew that she had to be talking about Sasha, because no one knew that Milan was my baby momma. I had to wonder who the fuck she was and how she knew all the hood’s gossip. I didn’t say anything though. I wasn’t worried about anything she said except the fact that Sasha was running around being a hoe after all the shit I did for her.

“So,”

Carter never got a chance to finish his sentence. The loud thud of a gunshot silenced him, then a barrage of shots followed, shattering Mellisa’s front windows and we all dropped to the floor, taking cover. My heart got to racing, wondering who the fuck was shooting and if the bullets were meant for me and Carter, or Mellisa.

Carter

Man, this some bullshit, I can’t believe how many bullets I done dodged since I’ve been back in Detroit. I was starting to think that I needed to take my black ass back to where I came from. Now I remembered why I left in the first place.

I scanned the room, making sure that Lissa and Wise were straight, then I looked for Adonnis. My heart dropped. He was outside, trapped in all that bullshit. If he got hit because of this shit, I wouldn’t even know how to take it.

As soon as the bullets stopped, I hopped up and made my way outside. Mellisa got to screaming about bringing drama to her house, but I wasn’t trying to hear it. I ran to the car, anticipating the worse. However, Adonnis wasn’t in there. I then searched the whole front yard, expecting to find his body on the ground. After a thorough search and no Adonnis, I got confused as hell. Did they snatch his ass up?

“Damn, where Don at?” Wise asked, walking up behind me.

“Over here ma’fucka, come help me up.” I heard Adonnis groan from behind us, but it was so dark outside that I couldn’t see him.

“I can’t see yo’ black ass. Where you at? You good?” I made my way toward the voice.

“Man, I can’t fucking feel my legs. They feel like noodles.” Don groaned, letting out a pained growl.

I finally found him tucked behind Mellisa’s garbage can. I used my phone as light to examine him once I was close enough. There was a stream of blood coming from his hip area. He was definitely hit, and I let out a frustrated breath of air. This nigga wasn’t supposed to get hurt!

“Come help me get this nigga in the car. We got to get him to the hospital.” I sighed, turning to Wise. He was already on it, though. We hurried up and carried him to the car with Lissa hot on our heels. She ended up hopping in with us.

“What the fuck just happened, man?” I asked, zooming up the block in route to the hospital.

“I don’t know.” Adonnis sighed. “One second I was on my way to the car and the next a blue Tahoe pulled up blasting. I didn’t know what the fuck was going on. I just took off running, and then I was on the ground, hit.”

“A blue Tahoe?” Lissa squeaked.

Adonnis nodded, holding his leg with a pained expression. “Yep,”

“Shit! That was Jabari's cousin! I told you he was from this hood, and his people got a tag on your head! Fuck! Now my house is hot!” Lissa was all hyped up, but she had me looking at her funny. Money made the most loyal niggas trade on you. She knew I was coming and I hoped that she didn’t set a nigga up for that bread!

Chapter Fifty-Six

Milan

“Selena, I’m letting you know now, I’m about to fuck your cousin up!” I yelled, tossing my phone onto the bed as another call to Wise went unanswered. He was starting to worry me and I didn’t like it. Whatever he was going through couldn’t have been important enough to ignore me.

“Nah, I’m about to fuck this heffa’ up myself! Now what type of info do you have to give to him?” Selena asked, shaking Sasha, causing her head to go up and down like a ragdoll.

“I told y’all! He knows that I overheard his conversation with Keem and now he’s fucking with me to get at Carter and Wise! The nigga is fucking crazy! I’ve been trying to call and warn Wise since I found out. I’m not the scandalous bitch that y’all trying to make me out to be!” She shrieked and I didn’t believe her story no more than I believed that the sky was pink. What had me more confused was the fact that I knew the voice. It was killing me not to be able to place it.

I let out a frustrated breath of air, knowing that she wasn’t going to tell the full truth. Quite frankly, I wasn’t in the mood for her bullshit. I’d be in jail for beating the life out of a pregnant girl.

“Look, I’m about to go to my room. Y’all can handle whatever y’all need to handle, and if you talk to Carter, please have him tell Wise to call me.” I snatched my things up, then began to make my way to the door. However, Sasha called out to me, stopping me dead in my tracks.

“Milan wait. I think that I know how to get rid of him.”

I rolled my eyes. “Girl please. Your scandalous ass don’t give a damn about no one but yourself. So if Wise isn’t fucking with you, why would you help?”

“Because the nigga is after me too! Besides, a dead baby daddy can’t do me no good. I’m not trying to raise this baby alone.”

Just the thought of her actually carrying Wise’s baby made my skin crawl. I think that she threw that in there just to make me feel some type of way. “Hmph, if that’s even Wise’s baby. Now go on, I’m listening.” I shot, crossing my arms over my chest. Both Selena and I were both staring intently.

“Well, he has to trust that I will help him since he keeps bugging me. I say let’s come up with a plan to set his ass up and have the men get his ass. I know that I can get him to meet up with me.”

I stood there thinking for a while, wondering if we could handle it without the men. Selena must have been reading my mind. She spoke up first. “No, fuck that. I have no problem busting my gun, especially if it’s to protect my man. It’s three of us, we can handle it, and obviously he knows Milan, and he knows that you are with us, so he’ll be expecting a set-up. We can do this.”

I listened as Selena broke down a whole plan. I felt like I was in the Twilight zone. Her plan sounded like a scene straight out of a movie. I had never committed a murder, but she had us about to set it off. Where was Wise? I needed him to hit me back asap. Things were getting too real.

The ride to the hospital had me ready to tell this Lissa broad to shut the fuck up. She was messy and I was surprised that Carter kept her around. I was getting pissed about her crying that her house was shot up.

Quite frankly, I didn't give a fuck. Don had gotten shot behind the bullshit and things could have been way worse. Once she said that it was Jabari's cousin that did that shit, all I could think about was finding the ma'fucka and sending him in the dirt with Jabari.

"Man, you talk too fuckin' much. Why this broad even with us." Adonnis groaned, holding onto his leg. I had never been shot before, but that shit looked like it hurt.

"Don't start with me, Don. I'm here because I can be! Now what y'all gone do about my house, and what the fuck am I going to tell that crazy motherfucker? He lives in my neighborhood! I knew I should have met yo' ass somewhere, Carter! What the fuck was I thinking?" She began to panic, and the look of sincerity, and pure fear plastered across her face told me that she couldn't have been on some set-up shit.

Since she knew everyone's business, I decided to ask a few questions.
"So that was his cousin who? And where that nigga stay at?" I asked, staring at her. She was definitely a pretty broad, but she gossiped too much.

"His name is Mike. That's a dude named Catfish's little brother. I told you that they had a price tag on y'all head for what y'all did to Jabari."

"Hold up, I ain't did shit to that man. What are you talking about?" My face twisted into a scowl. I wasn't about to admit to shit. Fucking with her, the whole hood would have known that we killed Jabari's punk ass by morning.

We pulled into the hospital's parking lot and Carter hopped out, grabbing a tech along with a wheelchair.

I never got a response from Lissa, as they wheeled Adonnis off, making us sit in the lobby. Carter called Lissa over to sit next to him once we were settled in. She did as she was told.

"Look Lissa, fuck the 21 questions. I need you to show us where those niggas live. Can you do that for me?" Carter's tone was soft yet demanding. I was still confused about their relationship status, but I shrugged it off as none of my business.

"You know I'm down for whatever when it comes to you. I got you." She agreed with a smile.

Carter nodded, "Good, now stay here with Don while me and Lil bro' go handle some shit."

"But the nigga don't even like me!" She pouted.

"Yeah he do. Just stay put." Carter demanded, tapping me on the shoulder. "We out," he added.

I hopped up just as a 911 text came through my phone from Milan. I forgot to call her back and I hoped like hell that the 911 text wasn't her trying to tell me that she killed Sasha.

We hopped back in the car and I allowed Wise to drive. I had a lot on my mind. I felt death around me. That shit was coming and I knew it. I would be a lie if I said that I wasn’t starting to feel some type of way. I wasn’t that hot-headed lil’ nigga from back in the day anymore. I had shit to lose.

Selena was about to pop out my kid, and I wanted to settle down and do the family thing. I lived the fast life too long and I was ready to just live. I looked over to Wise. “Man we’ve been cheating death too much lately. This shit tonight got me feeling like fuck it. I swear, I thought my nigga Don was out of here. I can’t go through that shit again.” I shook my head, trying to shake thoughts of the past.

I never said anything, but, I be having these fucked up dreams. Like, ma’fuckas be out to get me, then I wake up before anything happens. That shit got worse after Selena left. Karma was a ma’fucka and I wasn’t trying to meet that bitch. I was trying to get my shit right.

Wise let out a sigh. “Man, I was thinking that. This shit crazy, bro. It’s way deeper than what I thought.”

“Yeah, I know. What’s up with Milan’s step-dad though? I mean, if it was a set-up and if he ain’t involved in this shit, I need to holla’ at him any way it goes. He came at me ‘cause he thought that I killed his partner and I don’t think I did that shit. I only came after him when they killed Ronnie.”

“I said that all along. You need to figure out what’s up. He prolly know. That ma’fucka ain’t all the way saved like he putting on.” Wise chuckled. “Ol’ School tried to check the shit out of me, bro. He ain’t even know that I hit old ma’fuckas too. I just stayed chill because that’s Milan’s people.”

My face frowned up in confusion. “Ain’t Melanie over there with them? I ain’t seen my niece since I got here. Y’all don’t never have y’all kids.”

“Man, all this shit that’s been happening, we can’t have ‘em. I’ll shut every ma’fucking thing down if one of my kids get hurt. Ol’ boy ain’t stupid enough to touch ‘em.”

“You already know.  This shit just got me thinking about everything. It ain’t worth it, bro. I’m taking my ass back to Atlanta with my family. As soon as they release Don, I’m out. You coming with me?” I asked, deciding to say fuck everything. I was doing fine back at home, no bullshit, just getting money.

Wise thought about it for a second before nodding his head. “Hell yeah. I’m wit’ it. Let’s get the fuck on.” He pulled out his phone, letting out a sigh. “Man… Call yo’ girl.” He shook his head, dialing a few numbers on his phone, then pressing it to his ear while still focusing on the road.

I pulled my phone out as well, calling Selena. She answered on the second ring, sounding all calm. I wondered why Wise told me to call her. Unlike Milan, she wasn’t blowing up my phone and she didn’t leave me no text messages.

Both Wise and I ended our conversation at the same time. He threw his phone on his lap and picked up speed. “What’s wrong, bro?” I asked, confused.

“Mannn, Milan said yo’ girl and her cousin on some Charlie’s Angel shit. They all about to go meet up with ol’ boy alone.”

I instantly got pissed. Selena specifically told me that it wasn’t shit up. I’d kill her myself if she did something stupid and my baby got involved. “Can’t this ma’fucka go any faster?” I asked Wise, as I began to dial Selena’s number back. She wasn’t answering. Her wanna-be thug ass got on my motherfuckin’ nerves sometimes. I created a monster, and I had no one to blame but myself.
