Epilogue

Jayn walked along the river forlornly.  She didn’t want to marry the man her father had found for her.  He seemed so boring in her eyes.  She wanted to be auctioned off like several of her friends had been.  Being married to four men seemed the ultimate prize to her.  Her father thought she should marry Benji, though.  She didn’t care for Benji.  In her eyes, he still belonged to Amber.

She walked to her home, wondering how she could tell her father, the leader of their community, that she wouldn’t marry Benji.  She knew marrying her was part of his punishment for what had happened with Amber, but she didn’t know why she should have to be a punishment.  Dogs and small children didn’t cry when they saw her, and she didn’t think she should have to be married to a man who would only love another woman for the rest of his life.

Jayn wasn’t paying any attention to what was happening when she walked into her home.   “Father, I don’t want to marry Benji.  I want to have my own auction.  Please don’t make me settled down with just one man.  I want to have four husbands like my friends do.”  She stopped speaking, startled as she saw six pairs of eyes staring at her as she rounded the corner into the dining room that doubled as a meeting room for the elders of the community.

Abram got to his feet and grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her.  “You’ve shamed me in front of my friends.”  He walked to the wall and picked up the phone dialing a number quickly.  “I have another girl for auction.  She is not fit for our Christian lifestyle.  One month from today would be perfect.”  He turned back to Jayn but didn’t really look at her.  “Get out of my sight.  I don’t want to see you before the day you will be auctioned.”

Jayn left the room, her heart pounding.  She hadn’t wanted to anger her father, but she needed to be able to live life the way she wanted to.

She smiled a little smile.  Her father was angry, but she was getting her way.  The next auction would be hers.
