Shane raised an eyebrow at her and chuckled. “Damn, that sounds scary. Remind me never to mess with you.”

She had to laugh with him. “I don’t need to. You know better. Now I just have to teach her the same thing.” She turned to Katie who had just reached the table. “Katie, what can I do for you?”

“Actually, it’s what I can do for you.”

“Oh, and what’s that then?”

“I can save you from making a fool of yourself.”

Cassidy deliberately brought her left hand up to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. Katie’s eyes widened when she noticed the ring. Her eyes flashed with anger.

“You really don’t want to marry him.”

“You couldn’t be more wrong. I do want to marry him. I am going to marry him. You’d better get used to the idea.”

“So you’re happy to marry a man who is still…” she shot a look at Dave and Monique and chose her words carefully. “
Seeing
another woman?”

Cassidy laughed. “This is getting really old Katie. I suggest you grow up. It’s not going to work. So leave us alone.”

Katie looked at Shane. “You know she said she was just stringing you along to teach you a lesson, right?”

Shane gave Cassidy a puzzled look. Cassidy wasn’t even worried. She knew by now that their bond was strong enough that he’d wait for her to explain. She turned to him. “It’s true. I did. The night Katie came to the gallery after your modeling session.” She smiled at him. “I’d told you I’d protect you and see her off. The easiest way to do it was to tell her she could have you back when I was done with you.” She shot a quick grin at Chance who chuckled at that. Then she slid her arm around Shane’s waist and smiled up at him. “Who would ever have guessed that we’d fall in love with each other?”

Shane hugged her to his side. “Sure as hell not me!”

She laughed and looked back at Katie. “So, you see, all you’re doing is making a fool of yourself.”

Katie rummaged in her purse. “I didn’t want to do this here, but….” She pulled out a belt and waved it at Shane. “Remember in the barn yesterday? You left this with me.”

Cassidy looked up at him. She recognized the belt as the same kind he always wore—she should do, she’d unbuckled it often enough. But she didn’t feel any doubt, not in him, not in them. He looked down at her and she knew he could see the trust in her eyes. He smiled and spoke to her not Katie.

“Yep, it’s mine.” He shrugged and gave her an apologetic look. “And yeah, I did leave it with her. But months ago, not in the barn yesterday. I already told you what happened then.”

Cassidy nodded at him then looked at Katie. “You should leave.”

Katie burst into tears and thrust the belt toward her. “Here! You have it!”

Cassidy smiled. “No thanks, why don’t you keep it as a reminder of the boy you knew.” She smiled up at Shane. “I got the man.”

And as Shane smiled down at her, she knew she’d never spoken a truer word;

PS – Project Semicolon

You may have noticed that the final sentence of the story closed with a semicolon. It isn’t a typo. Project Semicolon is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction, and self-injury. Project Semicolon exists to encourage, love and inspire. It’s a movement I support with all my heart.

"A semicolon represents a sentence the author could have ended, but chose not to. The sentence is your life and the author is you." - Project Semicolon

This author started writing after her son was killed in a car crash. At the time I wanted my own story to be over, instead I chose to honour a promise to my son to write my ‘silly stories’ someday. I chose to escape into my fictional world. I know for many who struggle with depression, suicide can appear to be the only escape. The semicolon has become a symbol of support, and hopefully a reminder – Your story isn’t over yet

A note from SJ

I hope you enjoyed Shane and Cassidy’s story. If you’d like to leave me a review, I would very much appreciate it. And please consider letting your friends know about the book if you feel they might like it. If you’re interested in following the Remington brothers as they each find love, there are more books to look for:-

Mason
is the first in the series. His second chance romance with, Gina, the girl he loved and lost.

You’ve just met Shane, the lovable rogue, who finally meets his match in Cassidy.

Carter will be out next and then Beau.

Chance is holding out for his own three book spinoff – that may take me a while! In the meantime you’ll see glimpses of him in my Summer Lake series, too. If you haven’t read them, you can get started for FREE.
