“Christ, Mal,” he growled. “Baby, I’m not going to last. You’re too tight. You feel too good.”

“Harder. Faster.” Who knew Jackson could let go and fuck her this way? It was astounding, fantastic, and exactly what she wanted.

She pushed her hips back, meeting him thrust for thrust. Their bodies slapped together, sweat pooling on their flesh as moans turned to cries of passion and breaths morphed to ragged bursts of air, each of them competing for what little oxygen remained in the room.

Mallory teetered on the edge, her body craving a second release that clawed its way through her core like a razor-sharp, double-sized sword. “Jackson!”

“Come for me, Mallory. Ah, God, come with me.”

Mallory didn’t have a choice. Just like the first, the orgasm slashed through her and spilled out of her with a force that destroyed her senses. Her body convulsed, her nails digging into the wood of the coffee table as her channel started to spasm. She heard him grunt, felt his cock jerk inside her as his hot seed filled her body…and the doorknob rattled.

“Shit.”

Before Mallory could even register what was happening, Jackson had yanked her up by her waist and was half running, half stumbling with her down the hall to his bedroom. He kicked the bedroom door closed just as the front door opened and voices fluttered down the hallway.

“We still get to go to regional. I wonder when that will be. Wow, I wonder—” Terri’s voice broke off and they heard a quiet “shush” that had to have come from Thaddeus.

Jackson slowly set Mallory on her feet. His head fell back on his shoulders and he closed his eyes, a smile playing at the corner of his lips.

Mallory covered her mouth to silence her laughter, then gasped when she remembered the evidence they left in the middle of the living room floor. “My shirt is still in there.”

Jackson lifted his head, blinked at her, then stopped trying not to smile. “I guess we’re busted.”

Mallory giggled softly. “Looks like.”

He reached for her, pulled her against him, and brushed his lips to hers. “I don’t care. Let’s get busted all the time. Marry me, Mal.”

“I—what?” Her heart skipped a beat as shock slammed through her system. Did he really just ask her to marry him? Now?

“I know this is a crazy time and place to propose, but I—”

“Yes.” She didn’t give him a chance to explain, didn’t give herself time to think. As far as she was concerned, this was the perfect time and place even if they were standing against the door in his bedroom with her naked and his cock hanging out while two firefighters from Silver Springs stood in his living room. “Yes, I’ll marry you, and we can get busted making love all over the city.”

Jackson chuckled. “I bet Cooper would love that one.”

The phone rang on the bedside table, and Mallory glanced at it. “Want me to get that?”

“Please.” He kissed her again before letting her go.

“Should I find another shirt, or do you want to bring the other one to me?” she asked as she walked to the phone.

“You should probably find another one and maybe the jogging pants in the bottom right drawer of the dresser.” He paused in the act of reaching for the doorknob and shook his head, but pure amusement lit his expression. “I might be awhile coming up with an explanation for this one.”

Mallory laughed and answered the phone.

“That sound is music to my ears,” Cameron said. “How are you doing, sis?”

“Absolutely fantastic.” She caught herself dancing a little jig by the bedside table. “What’s happening around HQ?”

“Wrapping up loose ends. Nothing new to report.”

“Then come over here when you’re done. Jackson made some chicken noodle soup.” At least she thought that was what she smelled. She didn’t add that it might be burnt by now considering…

“Chicken noodle soup?”

She could all but hear Cameron wrinkling his nose. “Hey, it beats cooking for yourself tonight.”

“Very true. I’ll be there shortly.”

Shortly turned into nearly two hours. The soup hadn’t burned after all, though Jackson had to reheat it once Cameron arrived. She and Jackson didn’t have to do much explaining, though Terri and Thaddeus obviously knew what they had nearly walked in on. They greeted both her and Jackson with wide, knowing smiles and had left it at that.

They gathered in the living room, bowls of soup in hand. Terri and Thaddeus sat on opposite ends of the sofa. Cameron perched on the coffee table. Jackson sat in the recliner. Mallory sat in the middle of the floor.

“Now that everybody is here,” Mallory said, and the conversation halted. She turned her attention to Terri. “I heard you say something about making it to regional.”

Terri nodded, her smile so wide it reached her eyes. “Thaddeus and I took second in the coed tandem team competition today. The top three teams get to go on to the regional competition.”

“That’s awesome. Congratulations!” Cameron said, and they all chimed in.

“Do you want to tell them our news now?” Jackson asked Mallory.

Mallory shrugged. “I’m game.”

“What news?” Thaddeus asked, setting his bowl on the end table.

Mallory watched Jackson and saw him lock gazes with Cameron. “I asked Mallory to marry me. She said yes.”

Terri squealed, and Thaddeus reached over to pat Jackson on the shoulder. Jackson smiled but didn’t look away from Cameron.

The best friends stared at one another for a long moment, and then Cameron slowly nodded. “Congratulations.”

Mallory shifted her attention to her brother, found him looking at her now, and saw equal parts happiness and fear swirling in his eyes. She held his gaze, knowing she didn’t need to speak to tell him she understood. She had seen the way he looked at Thaddeus, knew he had something going on with Adrien Bingham back in Silver Springs, and understood why he was running from it all. She had done it for years, but she had stopped now, and she hoped one day soon he would, too.
