Damon’s pale blue eyes twisted in pain. “I would never let anything happen to you. What happened between us back in the cave…it’s not something I take lightly. What is this about?” He reached out for her, his thumb moving across her skin where the tear had been, as if to absorb the hurt.
Angela drew in a shaky breath, flashbacks racking her body, tension twisting through her muscles. “The last time I was here on Planet US-2…I never even had a chance.” She met Damon’s solemn gaze, the intensity giving her the courage to go on. “The clones stormed our ship, killed everyone but Elara and I. They knocked me out and took me to their camp. The entire time I was out. When I finally came to, Rogue and Elara had rescued me, but they’d found me naked and bruised. For a long time I never knew what happened to me. The not knowing was…”
“I’ll fucking kill them all.” Damon stood, fists clenched at his sides.
She reached out to the hand that was clenched in fury and pulled him back down. She folded her hands over his until the trembling of his rage subsided. “They didn’t rape me, but what they did still haunts me. The feeling of vulnerability left me a mess. That’s why, when you put me to sleep to carry me to safety…that’s why I freaked out. And that’s why I wanted to fight those clones following us. I’ll always fight.”
Damon took Angela into his arms, clutching her close.
She relished the sanctuary, but only for a moment before she pulled away and looked solemnly at Damon so he would never challenge her resolve again. “And I’ll send any clone that tries to put hands on me to death.”

The dry landscape rolled before Angela and Damon as they trekked toward Base 23. Damon had been quiet since their earlier talk, the dreamy haze of their moment of pleasure almost a distant figment of the past. Almost. Despite her fury with him for taking her away from the fight against her will, Angela still recalled the adoration she’d seen in his gaze at they’d made love in the cave. He’d been both a gentle and frenzied lover. Their slow, grinding passion had evolved into an animalistic need…one that Damon had made sure left both of them sated.
Her sex throbbed at the erotic memory.
Not so distant, indeed.
She needed to free her mind of the intoxicating moment and focus on the mission.
“Tell me about the revolt. Have you ever found any other humans hiding in the caves like you?” Angela immediately regretted the question because she saw his shoulders stiffen. They walked on, and for a moment, she didn’t think he would answer.
“I’m sorry, Angela. I don’t believe there are any survivors from Base 23. I have seen some humans taken as slaves, but the reason they’ve become a commodity is because humans aren’t usually left alive. The hatred runs too deep.”
“For us, you mean?”
He glanced at her, his brows furrowed. If he didn’t look so tormented, she would have been taken back by his handsome visage. She’d never been so attracted to a man in all her life. It made sense that he would be just as tortured by Planet US-2 as she.
“Yes, for us,” he said.
“Why, and when did it get to that point? I don’t understand. When Elara and I came for our first mission to US-2, we were never briefed that there would be hostilities.”
“Of course there were hostilities,” he grated.
Angela stumbled, distracted by the ferocity of his words. Damon caught her, halting to stand with her for a moment.
He cupped her cheek with the palm of his hand. “You’re naïve because you are kind of heart.”
She batted his hand away and continued walking.
How dare he call me naïve.
After all she’d been through, Angela was anything but.
Damon caught up to her with ease and clasped her gently by the wrist. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for
naïve
to be taken so poorly. I only meant to say that although you harbor ill will toward the clones, you don’t think like a villain. This entire clone program is villainous.” He released her and stalked away, but she could tell by the way his jaw was set, he had plenty more to say.
Elara kept a quick pace beside Damon. “When we landed, we thought we were going to be retrieving proud, eager soldiers. They would have returned from their duties as war heroes.”
“They were never given that chance though. No one was given a choice. Heroism is only capable when one is human. The clones were never allowed to feel human, so why would they ever feel proud to fight for the race?”
Angela was taken aback by Damon’s holistic view of clone sentimentality given all the violence he’d witnessed. “You’re right. They should have integrated the clones so they knew what they were fighting for. I always thought that, as clones, they would have been programmed what to think. Until I landed, I never realized that they’d be capable of such emotion, like the hate they carried for us. Fury…”
“Lust.” Damon’s deep voice clipped, the husky quality sounding bitter rather than playful. Perhaps he was angered over her story she’d revealed to him. Although Damon was still a stranger, Angela realized something deeper ran between them.
She glanced over at him as they hiked on. His eyes were set on the landscape before them as if on high alert so they wouldn’t encounter unexpected company once more. The intensity of his gaze and his lethal stride left Angela breathless. She shook it off. “I suppose I thought the clones would be more robotic in nature, stoic, like our own armies at home. They’re programmed to do as they’re told from the very first boot camp.”
Angela screamed as Damon snatched her into his arms and dipped her backward. His face hovered a feather’s width away from her own. “Never question this—there is no being on any planet that could not be stirred by your presence.”
By the time he finished speaking, her lips were all but begging for his kiss. The heat in his gaze promised she wouldn’t be disappointed. He kissed her long and slow, her body melting into his arms. His hands kneaded her curves gently, making her moan with desire as he stroked the inside of her mouth with his tongue.
The kiss broke, but instead of releasing her, Damon scooped her up and began carrying her.
Her brows furrowed automatically. “We’re on a mission, not a honeymoon, Damon.”
“
My
mission is to keep you out of harm’s way. We were nearly spotted earlier, we need to lay low.” He carried her toward a steep hill. “We’ll hide in plain sight atop that plateau. It’s small enough we won’t be caught unaware, and we can watch for anyone on the ground.”
“We don’t have time for a field trip.”
“You’re wrong.” Damon never faltered as he began climbing up the hill with her in his arms. “We have all the time we need, for you won’t find what you’re looking for. The damage was done long ago.”
Angela sucked in a breath, the hurt still burning within her chest. “Aren’t you a ray of sunshine?” She watched the hill slowly pass beneath Damon’s feet. “I can walk, you know.”
“I know.” He cast her a sly grin. “I’ve never had something I’ve cherished to hold in my arms. Now I’m reluctant to let it go.”
Angela raised a brow. “Jungle fever, eh?”
Damon took several long strides and soon they arrived on top of the small plateau. He laid her on the ground, a primal glint in his eyes and a smile on his lips that sent a jolt of electricity through her body. “A fever indeed.”
Chapter 6
Damon should have felt guilty about keeping Angela from her mission. Instead, satisfaction and anticipation burned in him, hotter than the hellish landscape he’d called home. But the kind of heat that Angela flooded his body with was different…it was a sensation to live for.
“Damon,” Angela protested softly as her back pressed against the ground.
Knowing the dirt would be hot beneath her, Damon pulled his shirt over his head and lifted her up slightly to place the fabric under her body like a small blanket. He noticed her gaze trail down his stomach, a pink flush dusting her cheeks. Did his form please her?
Her eyes met his and her adorable blush deepened. He kissed her, feeling the sun’s warmth on her lips. His hands cupped her cheeks, seared by more intense heat. He cursed himself silently. As a clone he was immune to the sun’s damage, he should have made sure her perfect skin was protected.
He pulled away and retrieved the backpack he’d shrugged off when they landed on the plateau. “The sun is intense on this peak.” He found the bottle she’d used to apply cream to her skin earlier. She reached for it, trying to sit up, but he eased her back down. “Allow me.” He tilted her cap down so the sun wouldn’t hit her face. “You once told me that darkness could intensify…sensation.”
He reached for the bottom of her shirt and slowly pushed it up, his breath hitching as more of her cream-colored flesh became exposed. Her chest rose and fell, her nipples hardening beneath the thin fabric as he eased it over her breasts. Damon squeezed some of the lotion into his palms and smoothed it over her taut stomach. He massaged higher, slowly nearing the dangerous curves that sought to undue his sanity.
Angela moaned, arching as his hands finally slid over her peaks. He twirled her nipples between his fingers, slippery from the sunblock. He continued to massage the lotion into her skin, memorizing every inch of her beautiful body and how her breaths rose and fell. Every few seconds, her chest heaved, as if her excitement warranted a deeper breath.
The lotion allowed his hands to smoothly descend toward the button of her shorts. He unfastened them, tugging them down to her ankles. He removed them, his body going rigid when he caught sight of her sex. If he had thought she was beautiful before, he was in awe now. For the first time, the sun allowed him to behold her perfect femininity.
“Damon?” Her soft voice muffled beneath the cover of her hat.
“I’ll never see anything so beautiful again.” The truth. Her beauty laid out before him, her trust to take care of her was a feeling that he’d never again feel once she was gone. He’d relish every second of it.
He squeezed more of the lotion into his hands and smoothed them up her calf, beginning at her ankle. The sun was already burning her skin, the heat tingling against his palm. But as his hands massaged her long legs, electricity flowed from her skin into his fingertips, charging his body with desire. He lifted her leg to rest on his shoulder as his hands moved across her skin, reaching her thighs. With her leg stretched so, he was afforded an unhindered view of her sex. As the sun glinted down her, he noticed beads of arousal dotting her skin.
His groin immediately ached, hardening with desire as he thought about tasting her. He licked his lips in anticipation, but first would make sure every inch of her intoxicating body was covered in the sunblock. He laid her leg gently back to the ground and squeezed more lotion into his hands. He reached for her other leg, placing it on his shoulder like he’d done with the first one. His hands wrapped around her calf, smoothing lotion protectively over her skin, and he loosed the tension from her muscles.
“That feels so good, Damon.” Her words were barely more than a whisper, the satisfaction in her tone making him smile. To be able to please her so made him feel as if he had purpose.
He massaged down toward her thighs, spreading her a bit wider for an even more enticing view. A groan escaped him when he noticed her slit was glistening with arousal. “I need to taste you again.” Damon picked up her other leg and rested it on his other shoulder. Scooping his hands beneath her supple ass cheeks, he lifted her sex up to his mouth.
Her slick flesh hit his lips, a scorching brand that could never burn hot enough for him to be tempted to move away. No, he drank her heat, dipping his tongue into her until it elicited a scream from her lips.
“Damon!”
His name acted as an invitation, urging him to drink her like an aphrodisiac. He breathed her scent in through his nose while his tongue was buried within her. His fingers dug into her ass cheeks when he thought about driving his cock into the same tight heat. Instead, he pulled away, reminding himself that he had time.
Damon didn’t take his eyes off her sensual form as he squeezed a final dollop of cream into his hands. This time he reached beneath her ass, kneading the lotion onto her round cheeks. She gasped when he spread her, leaving no crevice unattended. He noticed the tight hole beneath her glistening sex and swiped a dollop of lotion over it. She moaned as his thumb passed over the tiny button. The carnal sound made it impossible for him to resist exploring more of her.
He gripped her ass and brought her up to his mouth for another taste. He swirled her clitoris between his lips, suckling on the tiny candy, receiving moans of approval. Her body began to tremble in his grip. Although he was still new to such pleasures, he had learned her body enough to know she was close to ecstasy. As he continued to devour her sensitive clit, his thumb, still slippery from the lotion, pressed into her tight asshole.
“Oh my God,” she screamed. Almost as soon as he entered her with his thumb, her thighs trembled in his grip, her body going taut.
He didn’t cease his onslaught, suckling on her clit until he nearly drowned in her delicious nectar. Her come seeped against his tongue like liquid silk. He drew more pleasure from her until she screamed and squeezed her thighs shut against his face.
“Damon.” She heaved a pleasured sigh, giggling. “I don’t think I can handle any more. I’m spent.” Her pleased voice was still muffled through the hat over her face, so he hovered over her to block the sun and removed it.
Her expression stunned him the moment it came into view. Her eyes were closed to half-mast, a giant, bright white smile splayed across her face. She appeared awake, but dreaming, her expression one of a hazy happiness.
He struggled to find words for her. “You’re absolutely stunning.”
“And you’re talented…and naughty.” A devilish glint sparked her gaze before she caught his lip between her teeth. She held him captive for a moment, her eyes penetrating his, making his already hard cock twitch with desire. Finally, she took his lips completely, pressing off the ground. “It’s your turn.”
“No.” The disagreement pained him. Surprise and hurt flashed in her eyes. He explained, “I know you feel the need to press on. Enough time has passed. Our passage should go unnoticed now that we’re sure no one was following. I want to help you with your mission, not distract you.”
