“So do you think your sister will ever forgive me for not
taking you to visit her right away?” Wolfe lounged at the edge of the pool,
watching Nikki slice her way through the water.
“Oh sure. She’s never been able to hold a grudge. Tell her
you were afraid I’d lose the child.”
“Lose the child?” He sat up straighter and stared at her. “What
child?”
“Close your mouth.” Nikki smiled. “You look ridiculous. I’m
not sure I want the father of my children to look like an idiot.”
“Are you telling me you’re pregnant?” He felt like someone
had hit him over the head with a two-by-four.
“Not yet, but if you try a bit harder I could be.” She
laughed gently. “Do you have any idea how shocked you look? If it weren’t so
funny, I think I might be insulted. Don’t you want us to have children?”
“We’re not even married yet! Hell, I’m scared to ask you to
marry me because you might take it in that pretty little head of yours to run
as far and fast as you can.” He stood up and started to peel his clothing off,
tossing it aside with little regard for where it might land. He needed to touch
her right now, just to make sure this wasn’t a dream. “You’ve spent every day
since I met you telling me you are afraid of commitment. Now you want children?
You are the most aggravating woman I have ever met!”
Nikki’s laughter tinkled across the water, the sound pure as
wind-driven snow. “Changing her mind is a woman’s prerogative.”
“The hell it is. How’s a man supposed to keep up?” He dove
into the water, surfacing beside her. “If we’re going to have children, I
demand that you marry me.”
Nikki treaded water with leisurely strokes of her arms,
wrinkling her nose. “That’s not a very romantic proposal.”
“I’m not feeling romantic, I’m feeling aggravated.” Wolfe
reached for her and pulled her up against him. Pushing an errant strand of hair
off her forehead, he seared a hard kiss across her lips. “I’d like to get
married right here, beneath the oak tree.”
“Okay, but you know my family will all want to come. Trina
being mad at you will be the least of your worries. My dad is a tyrant and he’s
going to want to plan all the details.”
“When?”
She blinked. “When what?”
He reached down to pull her hips hard against him, letting
her feel the thick length of his full, erect shaft. “When can we have the
wedding, because unless you start wearing clothes when you go swimming you’re
going to be pregnant a lot sooner than you think.”
Nikki raised one brow, a slow smile curving her delectable
lips. “Is that a threat?”
“Hell no.” He rotated his hips, grinding the hard-on against
her soft belly. “It’s a promise, and one I intend to keep.”
Nikki lifted her arms out of the water to wind them around
his neck. “I’ve always thought it would be nice to be married on midsummer
night’s eve. There’s a magic in the air, what with the flowers starting to
bloom, and the promise of new life infusing the air with hope.”
Wolfe tilted his head. “That would be perfect. It’s almost a
month away, but I think I can wait that long.”
Nikki giggled. “A month isn’t going to give us much time to
plan, but if Trina agrees to help I think we can do it.”
“So why the change of mind?” He kicked his feet, pulling her
toward the shore with him.
Nikki shook her head, her expression sobering. “Not really a
change of mind so much as a change of heart. Sitting in that cage day after
day, being treated as less than human, I realized that everything in life is a
risk. I could have died there. What if you hadn’t found me? There are so many
things I can’t control in this world, but my happiness isn’t one of them. I am
not my mother, and I don’t have to let her decisions influence my life. I love
you more than I thought I could ever love anyone, and I want to build a life
with you.”
He trailed a series of wet kisses from her neck to her
shoulder. “Well, that’s good to hear because I have no intention of ever
letting you go.” They drifted into shallow water and Wolfe gathered her in his
arms, carrying her toward the grassy bank.
She’d stolen his heart, and he wouldn’t have it any other
way.

Her hobbies, when she's not playing with the characters in
her head, include kayaking, hiking, motorcycles, swimming, skating, karate,
