Symbolic Numbers in Scripture
Never engage in numerology, which is the study of the occult significance of numbers. But when 12 and 3 and 40 appear in the Bible with such frequency, and when the Bible contains a whole book called Numbers, I think it is okay to ask God what certain numbers mean. Is it a coincidence that God chose 12 men to birth Israel’s tribes and Jesus chose 12 men to birth His disciples? (See Genesis 42:13; 49:28; Matthew 10:1–4.) And is it a coincidence that Jonah was in the belly of a whale for 3 days and that Jesus was in the grave for 3 days, or does one foreshadow the other symbolically? Jesus answers that Himself in
Matthew 12:40: “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
