“What the hell is wrong with you?” Rhys whispered.

“Oh yeah! Did you just see what she did? That is the sexiest thing I have ever witnessed. Your mate’s friend just gave me a hard-on.”

“TMI, Boris, TMI,” Myka added in a low voice.

Rhys was ready to shift and bring Lori to heel when Boris grabbed his biceps. He looked over at his brother as Boris shook his head, watching as his brother cocked his head down the road.

“We have more players,” Boris grunted.

A Hummer bounced and weaved over the potholes that filled the road.

Even in the dying light it wasn’t hard to tell who’d come to the challenge early. Rhys sighed. “This is turning into one major clusterfuck.” The all-terrain vehicle stopped, its bright headlights illuminating the scene before it. Fre backed up to the sedan and passed her friend as she, too, went around the car and into the back seat. Her ass wiggled as if she was searching for something. The woman with her wedged up against the automobile kitty-corner and kept her weapon still.

Fre eased out the rear and held two semiautomatic pistols, one in each hand. She raised them, aiming one at Lori and the other the Hummer.

With her gaze on her foes, he watched entranced as she walked to her friend’s side.

“I agree, Boris, it’s one of the sexiest things I have ever seen. Fre may not be an animal, but I do believe she is deadly.” Rhys couldn’t stop the smile that split his lips.

The truck doors opened, and Roman and his men poured out. Wallis had a silly smile on his face and his nemesis and ex-brother-in-law yelled out something about serendipity. Lori moved, aligning herself with the new arrivals. Fre said something over her shoulder to her friend. Suddenly the men with Roman shifted. His mate was outnumbered, no more sitting back. He embraced the change and bounded out of the vegetation. He heard his brothers behind him as he jumped up on the car, his nails scrapping the trunk lid. Myka and Boris flanked the vehicle.

Fre stared at the mad man that exited the nice Hummer. “Take her,” he’d said. She’d like to see him try. Since the red wolf moved toward the men she aligned her hands. The beast was making it easier to shoot the bitch.

“You weren’t kidding. How the hell do people not know werewolves walk among us?” Nix asked.

“Hell if I know. Can you make it to the driver’s side?” Fre whispered out the side of her mouth.

“Most definitely.” Nix chuckled.

Noise rent the air behind them. Then she heard the growls and the sound of nails scratching metal. Fre pursed her lips and refused to look behind her. She saw a huge brown bear in her peripheral vision.

“Fre, hon, I think we got more company.” Nix stated the obvious.

“Glance back and tell me if it’s a huge black wolf with a white tuft of 78

fur over his eyes.” Fre kept her eyes on the monsters before her.

“Yeah, it’s a black wolf.” Nix swung around, rested her back against Fre’s, and aimed her gun at him.

“Don’t bother, Nix. He’s on our side. I think that’s my husband,” Fre added drily.

The wolf above her snorted.

“Girl, when this is over you and me are going to have a long talk about going off with strangers.” Nix flipped again, facing the other men.

“So who added a bear into the mix?”

“Fuck if I know. Maybe wolves aren’t the only were-things.”

“Ladies, if you will step away from the car, then I can get you away from the beasts that are now at your back.” The older man that seemed to be directing the crew in front of her spoke.

“That’s a negative, Mr. Crazy man. I was fussing at my girl here about going off with strangers. I don’t want to set a bad example,” Nix answered for her.

Fre nodded and yelled out. “Yeah, what she said.” The red wolf didn’t wait and vaulted, landing directly in front of Fre.

Cannonball hurdled out the bushes and latched onto the red wolf’s throat.

Fre glance at her friend “Trade guns with me.” She snatched the shotgun from Nix’s hands while pressing the GLOCK into her palms. Fre swung the shotgun, holding it like a baseball bat, and aimed for the red wolf’s head. The puppy released its throat just as she made the connection with its skull. A thick crack split the air, the beast yelped and the wooden handle cracked. A large gray wolf sprang forward, taking the red wolf’s place and the pup tried to get a hold of its leg. Cannonball was swiped off and nipped. The baby wolf cried out. Fre raised her arm to take another swing, and Rhys flew over her, locking his jaws in the fur between the shoulders of the gray beast and flinging him away.

Nix fired a shot at a charging wolf; the bear lumbered between them and rose to his feet. He caught the wolf in the underbelly, raking his nails through the soft skin. The monster landed and dropped in the road. Fre 79

dropped to her hands and knees looking for Cannonball-Keen. Nix fired off rounds while the animals circled them. Rhys stayed close, fighting two wolves off, blood pooled at their feet as he went for one then the other.

She found Keen hidden behind the front wheel. She dropped the gun and scooped him up. Standing, a blond wolf landed on the car a few feet from her, his maw open exposing razor sharp teeth.

Fre hugged Keen to her, his front little leg hanging at an awkward position. The blond wolf growled, taking a step. She held the puppy with one hand and dropped to her haunches, patting the ground for her weapon.

Nix sidestepped over and raised the GLOCK at the big wolf’s head. Then a blur of black fur jetted past her and knocking the beast from the hood, they hit the ground with a
thud
.

Moving headlights caught her attention as another truck pulled up and men flowed from the vehicle, quickly changing into their beasts. Fre pulled the sedan door open and placed Keen on the seat. She slammed the door, bent to grab the shotgun, and stood. Fre pumped the weapon and took aim. The butt of the gun the slammed into her shoulder and buckshot flew as a brown wolf hurdled toward her. Its body was thrust back from the force of the blast.

She glanced around. Somehow Nix and the bear were back to back.

Too many wolves, Fre wasn’t sure who was who. She turned her head and spotted Rhys battling the blond wolf, fur flying as they dove at each other meeting in midair. Their body’s contorting in strange positions as each animal tried to get hold of a tender spot to ensure a kill. Another wolf came her way, and she flipped the weapon and swung with all her might, catching the animal in the ribs as it soared her way. She didn’t see the one behind her until she felt claws dig into her back. Fre dropped to her knees as it snapped its jaws at her neck. A large, all black wolf sideswiped it.

She cried out when the animal’s nails tore her skin.

Fre rose up on her knees, dragging her weapon with her. She leaned on it to get to her feet. Panting she fell against the car, groping for the handle with Keen tucked under her arm. The door popped open and 80

brushed her ass. Fre yanked at it and tucked Keen inside on the floor.

“It’s okay, baby. No one will get past me. I’ll keep you safe.” She grabbed a pistol, hit the lock with her elbow, and bumped the door closed with her hip.

She raised her arm to shoot the next bastard that came her way. A howl broke through the melee and she looked toward town. An all-white wolf rushed toward them and behind it, hundreds of wolves followed.

Suddenly animals were retreating, shifting, and climbing into their vehicles. The blond wolf broke away, limping toward the Hummer in blood-drenched fur. Fre watched as he switched to his human form. Some of the men with him picked up their wounded, packing them into their vehicles. The older man climbed into the passenger seat but not before he screamed, “This is war!” Spittle flew from his lips. The door slammed, trucks started, and tires turned kicking up grass in their haste to leave.

Rhys stepped in behind Fre, ignoring the threat. “You’re hurt.”

“I’ll live.” She moved forward to meet Nix.

All around them men shifted.

“Holy heavenly hot man candy.” Nix’s eyes widened as beasts turned into men. She swung around to face Fre, bouncing on the balls of her feet.

“Bet you can’t say that fast three times.” Nix giggled. “Fre you really want to leave this…this?” She waved her hand.

“Nix, honey, you’re demented.” Fre shook her head.

Rhys’s family surrounded them. The man that had been a bear crowded Nix. She stepped closer to Fre.

“Rhys,” Fre said with exasperation.

“Stop, Boris.” He looked down at Fre. “Where’s Keen?” She nodded toward the car. He moved to where she’d indicated and tapped on the window with his knuckles. The door squeaked when it was cracked open. Keen flew into his arms. Rhys pushed his nose into his son’s hair and murmured quietly.

Myka walked up and smiled briefly at Fre before turning to Rhys.

“Wallis and Lori are dead as well as a few of Black Mountains sentinels.

What do you want to do with them?

Fre tilted her head and watched as Rhys glanced around him with cold eyes. “Burn the bitches. Let their stench be a warning that Volkshire is a pack to be reckoned with.”

Myka’s smile was faint. “Fair enough, not that I think anyone’s forgotten that.

She grabbed Myka’s forearm. “Thank you.”

He narrowed his eyes and looked at her strangely. “For what?”

“You got that wolf off my back.”

He snickered. “Oh that. Your pack, no one messes with pack. Come on Keen, let’s get that armed looked at and you can give orders about clean up.” He took the boy from his brother. Keen waved at Fre as he was carried away.

Rhys grabbed her, loosening his grip when she flinched. “If you run, I will chase you.”

Fre placed her hand on his chest. “You’ll get tired of me eventually.

I’m sure you have all types of beastly women after you.”

“I told you once, wolves mate for life. Pack rules.” He moved her hand over his heart.

Epilogue—Later that night

Fre rolled over and into Rhys’s arms. They’d played in the shower, now it seemed he was ready to go at it once more. She wiggled her ass and felt his cock come to life. He slid a hand across her hip and dipped his head to kiss her neck.

“There is one thing we need to do,” he whispered in her ear.

“And that is?” She looked over her shoulder to meet his evergreen stare.

“We need to complete the mating.”

“If I don’t?” She stretched languidly.

“But you’ll want to, I promise.” He kissed her shoulder.

“Wait, I want to know something that’s been bothering me.” She turned over to face him.

“Okay. What’s on your mind?”

“Boris… He’s a huge bear and you’re a wolf. How exactly are you brothers?”

Rhys chuckled. “You choose now to want to know about my family history?”

“I’m not exactly the one that wants to know. Let’s just say a little multicolored birdie inquired.”

“Ah, well it’s an easy answer. He’s a Kodiak bear and was adopted as a cub. God only knows what our mother was thinking.”

“Oh.”

“Now back to what we were doing.” He slid down in the bed.

“Wait! Something else. This isn’t an inn, is it?”

“No. It’s the Blaidd family home and I’ll give you a tour tomorrow.” Rhys sighed. “Anything else?”

“Not at the moment.” Fre eased to her back as he wrapped his lips around her turgid nipple. Sucking the taut tip into his mouth and rolling it 83

across his tongue, he cupped her other tit in his palm, rubbing the distended tip between his fingers. Every touch seemed to pull in her pussy. She moved her hips, pressing her thighs together.

Rhys lifted his head. “Do you still accept me as your mate?” His voice was barely a rasp.

“Do I have any choice?” she countered.

He skated a hand down her belly and pushed it between her legs. “Not really.”

Fre opened for him and felt his finger trace the moist folds of her cleft.

Rhys dropped his head and resumed his ministrations to her hard nipple.

He bit down, and she arched her body, pushing more of her heavy orb into his mouth. At that moment he slipped a digit into her channel, then another finger. He thrust into her slick passage, and he licked and nibbled at her breasts. She buried a hand his hair, grasping the locks in a closed fist. He lifted his head.

“Turn over for me.” He pulled his fingers from her pussy.

She narrowed her eyes, her clit throbbing. Fre turned over.

“Reach for the headboard.”

Fre wrapped her hands around the iron spindles that held the furniture together.

“Spread your legs.”

She slid her legs across the cool sheets. Rhys disappeared for a moment. Fre felt the cold metal of shackles being locked on her ankles.

She tried to flip her legs. The chains rattled.
