Part I
Innerworld
Chapter 1
Dan Halsey considered himself a successful young man. He valued his freedom and loved the ocean, good food and pretty women, and as first mate on The Baronette, he had it all. No expense had been spared when they built this honey, he thought as he briefly scanned the state-of-the-art equipment on the bridge. The NAVSTAR global positioning system was a virtual guarantee against getting lost at sea.
Working this particular charter had only taken him from Fort Lauderdale, the private fishing charter's point of origin, to Walker's Cay in the Bahamas. But two hot babes were along for the ride which meant, for once, he might not have to compete with Nick.
The balmy October night added to the perfection that was his life. The only thing missing was a cold beer. He headed for the spacious lounge to fix that, toasted his suntanned face in the mirror behind the bar then headed downstairs. Strolling the length of the polished teakwood deck, he noticed only one light on inside the marina's small clubhouse. Even the Customs Office of this isolated port was closed by the time they had tied up.
At the end of the dock, two men reeled in their lines and packed up their tackle box. Real fishermen didn't sleep if the fish were biting, Dan thought, smiling as he watched the guys casually make their way back along the wooden pier that ran in front of The Baronette.
Dan leaned over the brass railing. "Catch anything tonight?" The men halted in front of the gangway, but the ship's shadow kept Dan from seeing them clearly.
The taller man set down the ice chest he was carrying and called back in a voice laced with a Spanish accent. "Got several good-sized snapper using live shrimp. We did a little better last night." As he talked, he leaned over and raised the lid on the chest. "Take a look at these last two we hauled in." Both fishermen reached in to prove his claim.
The men's arms raised. Expecting to see fish, Dan's mind refused to register what his eyes actually perceived. In a heartbeat, the imagined fish took the form of two automatic weapons. Dan knew he should run, knew he should drop for cover, but he froze.
