“He can feel me now. He
knows I am here and near him.” Malachi looked at Eme with wide
eyes. “His state of mind is consumed only with the idea of
achieving what he desires most. He will stop at nothing to show you
this.” His eyes met Mylana’s.

“We must find your child as
soon as possible. Who knows where Khalid is?”

Rising from the
chesterfield Elijah spoke. His was voice strong and in
control.

“I can take you to him.”
With a nod from Malachi, the two made their way to the foyer. In
disbelief, Mylana was unable to move until the click of the
doorknob woke her from her dismay.

“What? No!” Mylana cried
out and sprung to her feet. “I have to go with you.” Eme watched as
Mylana ran to the foyer to join Elijah and Malachi. With tenderness
he reached out for Mylana’s shoulders, stopping her from coming any
further.

“No, you must stay here. If
we are unable to connect with Adam, we will not do anything in
haste. We will come back for you both to aide us in this war.” He
paused for a moment then continued. “I will not let anything happen
to Deirdra.” The two looked at each other keeping their silence for
a moment before Elijah broke their gaze.

“We’ve got to go.” Elijah
said, turning and grabbing his leather coat. Malachi and Elijah
slipped out into the night.

Driving through the streets
of Montreal, the silence in the car was awkward. The hum of the
motor and rotating tires being the only sound, neither vampire
attempted small talk. Elijah drove as Malachi sat motionless. He
couldn’t help but keep looking at him, trying to conceive of
Malachi as somehow being of the same blood as Adam. They seemed to
share nothing in common. Elijah could tell that Adam had been and
probably to some degree, would always be, the controller in
Malachi’s life.

Nearing the house that Adam
had made his own, Elijah noticed Malachi resting his head against
the back of the seat. His eyes were closed but fluttering as if in
REM sleep. Elijah knew he was communicating with Adam in a way
unknown to him. Although neither Malachi nor Adam had the ability
of telepathy, they could still somehow silently communicate. Elijah
could only conclude that through the emotional bond they shared, by
virtue of being twins, was what made their link
possible.

Elijah’s eyes darted from
the road to glancing at Malachi. His only hope was that the
knowledge of his brother’s existence would be substantial enough
for Adam to forget about Deirdra. His greatest fear was that if
Deirdra was with Adam, would she fight against them. Would he have
to live up to the ultimatum he had given her–that he would kill her
if she would not become their ally again. His heart sunk at the
thought of such a confrontation with her, for she had been his
confidante, lover and friend. They had shared their blood, their
lives and emotions for over one hundred years. Elijah choked back
his tears.

Rounding the last corner,
Elijah’s mind flew back to the present. Slowing to a stop, he put
the car in park and turned the ignition off. Turning, he looked at
Malachi, reached out and gently touched his shoulder hoping to
rouse him from his link with his brother. Malachi blinked once,
twice, then turned quickly to look at Elijah then out the tinted
window at the run-down brick home. He reached for the door handle,
stepped out of the car and sauntered up the walkway to the side
door. Elijah quickly followed suit and stayed a few feet behind
him. Stopping at the door, Elijah waited and watched for Malachi’s
next move. He would let him take control of the situation for
Elijah didn’t know if there was much he could even do against
Adam.

Elijah followed Malachi
into the house and through to the kitchen where they now stood. It
felt like years had passed since he had talked with Brenna which
was almost in the very same spot that Malachi and him stood. The
house was still in disarray and dirty dishes, now moldy, sat in the
filthy sink. As the furnace kicked in, the fan blew through the
vents the scent of decay. He had not caught it the first time he
was there and wished that he hadn’t this time round. As they made
their way through the kitchen, Malachi stopped, turned and looked
at Elijah.

“Where is he?” He asked his
voice cold. Staying silent, Elijah walked passed Malachi, down the
hall and stopped outside Adam’s room. As Malachi stood beside him
he paused for a moment, letting his gaze meet Elijah before opening
the door. Elijah stood still as the door creaked open and Malachi
walked in. Mainly candles lit the room but a single small table
lamp also illuminated the space.

“Greetings brother. It has
been some time, hasn’t it?” Malachi said as he walked further into
the room. Elijah kept his place in the hall listening as Malachi
turned from the door and disappeared into the room. “So, you are at
it again, I hear.”

“Brother,
why don’t you join me? We can reign together. We are immortal, we
are powerful and beautiful–” Adam began only to pause for a moment
followed with a slight snicker. “Oh, yes, forgive me.
Most
of us are
beautiful.” Adam added his words frigid.

Elijah stood motionless in
the hall, feeling stupid and useless, listening to Adam insult and
belittle Malachi. But this was not his fight.

“That mess over there,” he
said pointing to Deirdra’s remains, “was that who you hoped to be
your Queen?” Malachi began, choosing to ignore his brother’s harsh
words and move on.

Elijah’s
heart pounded,
Oh God Deirdra is with
him
! He took a step forward but stopped
himself.

“If it
were not for you–like always–things would have run the way I wanted
them to. But as usual, you have put a kink in my plans.” Adam
retorted. “You would have liked her. She would have made a good
Queen. She was finally learning to truly love her power and her
nature, even though I was the one guiding her and controlling her.
But alas, I have to show them, my ungrateful children, that what I
say is what I mean. I
will
make this new millennium a great and powerful one
for my vampires.

“Ah, but I thought I was
the crazy one? What do you suppose your children will do when they
see what you have done to her, to your beloved Queen?” Malachi
pushed.

Listening
to his words, Elijah’s gut began to churn.
This does not sound right…
And at
that thought, he walked over the threshold and looked about the
room, finding Adam standing near the couch with what looked like a
severely decomposed body. The body wore black leather pants and a
charcoal turtleneck. Its hair was a dull mass of wavy dirty-blond
hair and its flesh a flaking slate gray.

“My God!” Elijah’s breath
was taken away. His beloved, his Deirdra, lay scattered on the
floor dead, her body in cinders. His scream filled the room and
like a beast in mourning, Elijah took a running charge at
Adam.

Adam raised his right hand
and chanted, “Du tourium, extarius!” His voice boomed and as if
grabbed by strong heavy hands, Elijah stopped in mid-charge and
flew into the air backwards. As he crashed against the wall in the
hallway, the bedroom door slammed shut, locking itself. Landing
hard on the floor, Elijah lay there for a moment as rage filled
him. Rising to his feet, he stood before the door, the only thing
separating him from Adam. His death would be the only thing that
would avenge Deirdra’s.

Chapter 17

(Deirdra – December 22,
1999)

Time over
the past week had blurred, my actions seeming like one never-ending
nightmare. During the day, my rest was unsatisfying and nights
found me tired, thirsty, and in a foul mood. My thoughts I knew
were no longer my own and I had become paranoid of everything and
everyone. Having talked with Mylana and Elijah two nights earlier
hadn’t placed me into the best of moods either.
Why won’t she and Elijah just join Adam and I? We should be
able to walk among the living, to rule their petty and nonessential
lives.
But as I thought this, I knew it
wasn’t really how
I
felt. I began to question my thoughts and my sanity. However,
as soon as some lucidity fell over me, my thirst–my hunger–began to
gnaw at me. Unable to fight back, I surrendered to it astonishingly
quick.

All
alone, my thoughts turned to Adam. I wanted to be with him. I
craved to be in his deadly grasp, drinking his blood and having it
course through my veins. I knew that I had become addicted to his
blood. I found myself needing his or another immortal’s blood to
quench my thirst over and above any mortal’s lifeblood. Using what
little willpower I had left, I vowed not to go to him. So I would
hunt. I would attempt to tame my bloodlust with a mere human. In a
blood-red haze state of mind, I made my way to the same Goth bar
that I had been frequenting lately.
If I
won’t allow myself Adam, then I will have someone
else
. I thought, trying to make my thoughts
seem logical and right.

Making my way through the
front entrance of the bar, I sauntered around the patrons. The
lights flickered and danced delightfully and the smell of cigarette
smoke, spilt beer and hard liquor wafted through the place. The
heavy alternative music blared from gigantic speakers, making my
chest vibrate with each boom of the bass. I let my eyes fall upon
one beautiful and fearless youth to the next. A smile crossed my
lips as I realized how much I loved the hunt itself. Seeing these
children filled with reckless abandon with no cares or fears, that
is what made the stakes even higher in my mind. Oh, how I delighted
in the thought of their impending deaths.

Walking through the crowd,
I was jolted from my delight when I began to feel a dizzying
sensation. Stopping, I held onto the nearby table causing the
people sitting there to stare up at me.

“What the hell’s your
problem?” A young girl yelled out to me. Ignoring her, I tried to
steady myself. Standing now unassisted but unsure of my footing and
balance, I looked down at the group of four kids–three boys and one
girl.

“I’m…” I had begun to
apologize but as the words started to leave my lips, no longer did
the kids sit there. What sat there were unpleasant memories from my
past. There was Stewart, the boy Mylana used to try and break me
from my mortal coil and learn to take life. As well as Brian, my
first love, my mortal love that I had made insane feeding from him
and telling him what I was. Beside him was David, my first kill and
the woman who had given me understanding through her death, my
angel girl. I was at a loss for words. Just past my view of my
living memories, I saw Angel walk towards us. I locked my gaze on
him. With all that I had been through in the past few weeks, I had
forgotten about him. He once ruled my thoughts, but now Adam had
taken over them.

The
lights from the bar still flashed their myriad of
colours
and the kids danced with
vigour
.
However, the music and noises of the bar had faded to silence and
was unnerving. As he stood behind Brian and David, he appeared so
calm. Whenever a light would flash over Angel, his eyes would
shimmer. Finally he began to speak.

“I have come to tell you
that I will be with you when it is time. I see that I was unable to
entice you into not killing as of late.” Angel began, his eyes
showing a hint of sadness. Completely confused, I stood there
stupidly gaping at him.

“Deirdra, you have shown
mercy in your immortal life and you have shown savagery. You have
lived your unlife to the best of your ability and I praise you for
it–and so may others…” His voice trailed off and he looked past me
for a moment before returning his gaze to mine.

“The one
who gave Adam his immortality does not like me to converse with
you. I can now tell you, that is who I ran from that first night we
met. But I do not fear him now, for not even he knows what is to be
your fate and is curious himself of your future. You are to be
their greatest experiment. You are their greatest love and
that
is what transcends
everything else.

“I will say nothing to you
this night of how you should not kill. Consider it your last meal.”
Angel stopped. With my brow furrowed, I cocked my head to the side
as I looked at him still confused.

“Why are you here? Why have
you come to me at all?” I asked desperately.

“I only came to warn you,
to keep you away from Adam. But worldly things are too great for
you to ignore and the desires of a vampire too great to set aside.
I suppose I asked too much but I only wanted to keep you away from
him. He is the one who gave me my true death, unwanted at the time,
but now I have learned to love this new existence. Deirdra, I am
Ezra.”

Shock filled me completely
and I was unable to form any words. Staring at him, I examined him
again: every strand of auburn hair on his head, the slight creases
at his eyes, mouth and forehead. I had not known Ezra and the one
time I had seen him, he lay flopped dead on the cold front steps of
Chantonnay nearly five years ago. All of a sudden the things I had
seen, the things we had talked about made sense and immediately
pure fear of true death overwhelmed me.
