When she said that Kali shot her an evil look. “You remember the dogs, but not the son you gave birth to?”
Bernie was holding her head. “So…so you’re my son? They told me my kid was dead. They said…they said he died.” She dropped the cigarette on the floor and I put it in the ashtray.
“Well they lied.” He laughed. “Grand pops and Grandma wanted to keep you away from me. They told you I was dead and told me you were dead. But I never believed them. Ever.”
“But…but…”
“You can’t remember.” He said completing her sentence. “I know.
You said that shit already. But the truth is you stayed high, Bernie. Or
shall I say, Bernice. As a matter of fact, I can’t remember you ever being
sober. If you weren’t smoking crack, you were doing heroin or drinking.
But you were never a fucking mother. Not to me anyway.”
“But…but we had sex.” She sobbed. “We did things together
that…you and me. Oh my God! You and me.”
“I know. And you loved it!”
“GET OUT!!!!!” She screamed pointing to the door. “GET OUT OF
MY FUCKING HOUSE!”
Kali glared at her. “You better lower your fucking voice. “I DON’T GIVE A FUCK!!! LEAVE NOW!!!!”
When she screamed again Kali hit her in the throat with the side of
his hand silencing her instantly. Then he stood up, grabbed his jacket, his
keys, and his hatchet.
“Come on, kid. I’m done with this bitch.”
My eyes widened as Bernie held her throat and dropped down on the
couch in pain. We were in Bernie’s car for twenty minutes until we made
it to an apartment in Southeast DC. He held keys so I guess it was his
new spot. When he opened the door I was amazed to see a very fly onebedroom apartment.
“Who lives here?”
“I do.” He said.
“By yourself.”
“Yeah.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“I already know.”
“Know what?”
“That you want to ask me about Bernie.” He paused. “Look, there are
a lot of things you don’t know about me. That bitch back there ruined my
life and made me the monster I am today. If I had a better mother, I
wouldn’t be so fucked up in the head. But she was my mother, so I used
her for all she was good for. A good nut.”
I didn’t like his method of getting back at her, by fucking her, but
since Harmony was my mother I knew where he was coming from. “I got it…” I said sitting on the sofa in the apartment. “But before I
forget, Jace found the ring. The one I took from that lady.”
Thinking he would be upset, I was surprised when he said, “Good.” “You not upset?”
“Naw. The nigga was gonna find out sooner or later I was involved.
But if he wants his bitch back, he gotta pay me double what he owes. I’m
putting a call in to his people tonight.”
“Where is she?”
“In a place I can get to her when I need her.” He winked. “She put
Bernie’s wig on and walked out the house pretending she was her. Jace’s
people were out there and everything.”
“So she ain’t dead?”
“No. I gotta keep her alive.” He went into the fridge and grabbed two
beers. He threw me one and drank from the other. I had my Hennessey in
my pocket but wanted something cold so I took a few sips. “I gotta keep
her alive for now anyway.”
“Oh…well he’s after me now.” I told him.
“You’re scared?”
“Fuck no!” I lied.
“Good because you ain’t got shit to worry about as long as I’m your
father. And I took care of that bitch too so she won’t be calling no police.
I’ll leave it at that.” He stood up, went to the linen closet and handed me
blankets and a pillow. I was surprised at how neat everything was. “You
sleep on the couch.”
“You not worried that Jace’s people might follow you?” I asked. “Naw…I got to Paco. The nigga he had following me and he’s going
to help me out with a few things or else.”
“Paco? Jace’s man?”
“Yes. He has something to lose and I made a visit to his girl and his
son the other day. He’s going to throw him off my tracks as long as he
can. Jace don’t have people around him he can trust. They break easily.”
He yawned. “I guess everybody can be touched if you know where to
touch them.” He put his hand on my shoulder. “Now get some sleep.” As I looked around I found it hard to believe he lived here by himself. “So nobody lives here with you for real?”
“Why? Just because I’m a fucked up nigga my crib gotta be fucked
up too?”
Silence
He laughed. “There’s a lot about your father you don’t know but
gonna find out.” He moved toward the bedroom door. “I’ll talk to you
tomorrow.” He continued before dipping into his room, closing the door
behind him.
