“Yes, of course, Ms. Olsen.”

“Thank you, Charlotte.” The intercom clicked off. After putting on her blazer and gathering her purse, Mariah strode toward the door. “I'm warning you, Clark. There are some things I want to keep to myself and this is one of them. Get off my back and don't follow me around!”

“Of course, Ms. Olsen,” he parroted Charlotte's mannerism, which was annoying.

Ignoring his tight jaw, she strained a smile. Unlocking and then opening the door, she guided with an open palm. “After you, Mr. Mannings.” She didn't trust him to keep his word. Then again, he never broke it and didn't seem to be the kind of man to break it either—unless he found reason to overstep someone's boundaries as he did hers. Nope, she couldn't trust him.

Watching Clark disappear down the corridor, Mariah took a deep breath and gathered the little strength she had left to face her next yet unexpected appointment. She couldn't shake the ominous feeling that clutched her chest.

Steadying herself in her heels, she raced to the car with only one thought that raced faster than her heart could pump and her legs could carry:
Please let her be okay. Please.
