“I spend all of
my free time with you. I never said that I would leave her for you for Christ’s
sake.”

“Did I ask you
to do that?” Vicky said and stood from the couch.

“You said you
want everything that I give to her,” Allen said.

“Not all at
once,” Vicky said and chewed on her fingernail. “One thing at a time.”

“So, what’s the
first thing you want? Don’t I fuck you well?”

“You fuck me the
best, baby,” Vicky said and smiled. “But I’m tired of fucking in the office, in
my cramped apartment when what’s-his-name is gone, in the parking garage of the
hospital. I want something better.”

“I can’t take
any time off, you know this. Perhaps you can join me when I go to the
convention in California, although I don’t know how I’m going to explain that
to Zoe.”

“Is that all you
think about? Please, Allen, if you were thinking of Zoe’s feelings at all would
you be fucking me?”

“And you? Are
you thinking of her feelings?”

“Of course not,
I’m thinking of
our
feelings.”

“Look, Vicky,” Allen
said, “I like how things are between us. I’m not saying they won’t change, that
we won’t have more opportunity to become closer, however at this moment, this
is all I can handle.”

Vicky panicked
as Allen spoke. She pushed him too far and she had to reel him back in or she’d
be another notch on his belt and he’d dump her like all of Zoe’s boyfriends
did. She knelt on the floor at his feet and wiggled her body between his legs.

“I’m sorry,
baby,” she said as she rested her head in his lap. “I didn’t mean to push you.
I just would like to spend one afternoon in a comfortable bed fucking you. I
want to treat you like the king that you are.”

“When and where?”
Allen said as he stroked Vicky’s hair as his cock and ego were aroused.

Your
bed.”
Vicky said and smiled.

“You are a nasty
little slut, aren’t you? Okay, done,” Allen said and sighed. “Wednesday
afternoon, Dr. Crosgrove’s wife Felicia is taking Zoe to Bar Harbor. They leave
at noon. Your ass better be in my bed no later than one o’clock. I want to see
how you treat your man like the king that he is.”

And so it was
decreed.

On Wednesday
morning, Zoe sat at her vanity brushing her hair in the mirror. She looked
through her reflection and not at herself. It was the day she was to finally
leave the house. She did not want to go with Dr. Crosgrove’s wife, however Allen
insisted.

“You haven’t
left this house in weeks,” Allen said to her that morning. “You don’t sleep and
you hardly eat. I know you’re taking the Valium, but you are taking too many.
We haven’t had sex in weeks. I ask you every day what is wrong and every day
you answer,
nothing
. This is not
nothing
.”

“I don’t want to
go today,” Zoe said as she turned away from Allen in bed.

“You have to go
today. Not only am I trying to get into Crosgrove’s favor, you need to get out
of this house!”

Allen got out of
bed and walked into the bathroom. He stared at Zoe through the mirror and shook
his head. He felt a twinge of guilt because he knew what he would be doing in
his bed that day, however he was tired of Zoe’s behavior. He did not sign on
for this and couldn’t handle Zoe’s psychosis. Vicky looked better and better to
him and he felt he could groom her to be his validation.

“I know that
something is going on,” Zoe said as she sat up in bed and stared at Allen’s
reflection.

“You are fucking
paranoid,” Allen said and slammed the bathroom door.

After Dr. Connor
left for work, Zoe forced herself out of bed and into the shower. She cried at
the vanity as she combed her hair and punched her legs as she stared at the
Valium bottle that she was too familiar with.

“I can’t go on
like this,” she said as she thought of taking the whole bottle of pills.

Nothing sounded
better to Zoe at that moment than an eternal sleep.

“Call her and
tell her you’re not coming,” a woman’s voice said from behind her.

Zoe turned
slowly in her chair and saw Sam sitting on the edge of her bed. She closed her
eyes hoping that when she opened her eyes, the beautiful girl in the red
negligee would not be there.

“I am here,
pretty,” Sam said and walked toward her holding Zoe’s phone. “I am real. Call
her and tell her you cannot come. You have a migraine.”

Zoe bowed her
head and took her phone from Sam’s hand. She called Felicia Crosgrove and
begged her off with Sam’s migraine excuse.

“Allen will be
mad,” Zoe said and sighed

“Fuck him!” Sam
said and led Zoe from the bathroom to her bed. “They are driving you insane, do
you realize that?”

They
?” Zoe
said and stared at Sam.

“I will show
you. Everything is true, Zoe.”

“What is true?” Zoe
said and shook her head. “I just want to sleep, Sam. Can’t you just let me
sleep?”

“Yes, come with
me,” Sam said and dragged Zoe from the bed.

Sam took Zoe
into the large walk-in closet that she and Dr. Connor shared. She sat on the floor
and held her arms up to Zoe.

“Lay here,
pretty,” Sam said and patted her long legs. “I will wake you when it is time.”

Zoe knelt
between Sam’s legs and lay on her side. She rested her head in Sam’s lap and
Sam hummed a pretty tune while she stroked Zoe’s forehead.

“This is nice,” Zoe
said as she closed her eyes. “I feel safe.”

“You are safe,
pretty. I will take care of you,” Sam said and resumed humming the soothing
tune.

Zoe drifted to
sleep while lying in Sam’s lap. She dreamt of devils ripping the flesh from men
and hideous creatures eating the hearts and brains from faceless women.
However, she was not frightened by the images that cycled through her head. Zoe
was empowered.

While Zoe slept,
Sam told Zoe all about herself.

She came to live
in the brownstone well before it was Dr. Connors.

In 1972 Samantha
and Jonathan Manetti were high school sweethearts and newlyweds. They both were
attending Harvard and the brownstone was a wedding gift from Samantha’s wealthy
parents.

Jonathan Manetti
was a genius and studying for his Ph.D. in World Religion. Nothing fascinated
him more than dark religions, something that no one, not even his beautiful new
bride was aware of. Jonathan just returned from Africa with some archaeologists
and uncovered some very interesting artifacts on the dig. He smuggled a totem
and ancient text back to Boston. Every night, he sat up in his office and read
over the instructions and incantations.

Jonathan felt
the power in the book and the totem. He knew he held pure evil in his hands and
soon was possessed by this evil.

His behavior
became erratic and violent shortly after his return from Africa. Samantha
wondered what happened to her kind, nebbish husband as she watched him drink
scotch like it was water. His face was even different...contorted always in an
evil look, Jonathan screamed at Samantha constantly and even slapped her
around. Jonathan stole Nightshade and Trumpet’s Purse from the Botany Lab at
Harvard and ingested it every night at midnight for months. As the
hallucinations kicked in, he stood over Sam’s sleeping body and chanted as he
read the spells.

Sam was
terrified of Jonathan and planned her escape from him and informed some trusted
friends at Harvard. They were as shocked as she was by Jonathan’s
transformation. He was always such a sweet, gentle man.

On July 29,
1972, as Samantha lay sleeping on her side, Jonathan staggered into their
bedroom, drunk and wacked out of his mind on drugs. He placed the evil totem on
the top of Sam’s head and pointed a gun at her. Sam opened her eyes as Jonathan
cocked the hammer of the pistol back and tried to roll off the bed. Jonathan
shot Sam in the back and the bullet pierced her right lung.

As Sam lay immobile
and suffocating on her blood, Jonathan chanted the Prayer of the Risen over Sam
and grew agitated when Samantha didn’t sit up in the bed and smile at him. As
the drugs and alcohol wore off and Sam didn’t move, he panicked, packed a bag
and disappeared from the house and the world.

As Jonathan
Manetti headed to Logan Airport to destinations unknown, Samantha opened her
eyes and sat up in their bed. Jonathan’s Prayer of the Risen did work, but he
never learned of this, of course. And Samantha Manetti never left the
brownstone.

“Wake up,
pretty,” Sam said some time later into Zoe’s ear. “It is time to open your
eyes.”

Zoe opened her
eyes and stretched in Sam’s lap. Sam smiled down at Zoe and Zoe remembered her
dreams and reached up and stroked Sam’s face.

“I had the most
bizarre dreams last night,” Zoe said and yawned.

“Yes, I know,”
Sam said. “You talk a lot in your sleep. You only slept for a few hours though,
pretty.”

“A few hours?” Zoe
said and sat up. “I feel like I’ve been sleeping for days.”

“No, not days,”
Sam said and stroked Zoe’s forehead. “Just a little while. Come now, they are
here.”

Zoe looked
around the closet and ran her fingers through her long hair. She heard faint
giggling and footsteps coming from the stairway outside the bedroom.

“Vicky’s here?” Zoe
said as she stood up and walked toward the closet door.

“Yes,” Sam said
and sighed. “She’s here with Allen.”

Zoe turned and
stared at Sam.

“Allen? Why
would she be here with Allen?”

Sam stood and
walked toward Zoe. She wrapped her long arms around Zoe’s neck. She bowed her
head and kissed the tops of Zoe’s breasts.

“She’s here to
fuck him, Zoe. As she’s been doing for months now. This time though is
different. This time, she insisted on fucking him in your bed.”

“Impossible!” Zoe
said and pushed Sam away. “Vicky would never do this to me. And neither would Allen
for that matter! And in my bed? They think I would just stand by and watch? You’re
crazy!”

“You are not
supposed to be here, remember? You would never know.”

Sam walked to
the corner of the closet and bent down in front of the floor safe. She spun the
safe’s dial and opened the heavy door to the safe. She reached inside and
pulled out a large, shiny wooden box and placed the box on the mahogany dresser
in the middle of the closet.

Zoe heard the
door to the bedroom open and walked to the closet door.

“No!” Sam said. “You
must see this unfold.”

Sam reached into
the box and pulled out Allen’s gun. Her hands closed over the cold metal and
she stared at Zoe.

Zoe stared
through the slats in the louver door and watched Allen and Vicky walk through
the door. Sam put her hand on the back of Zoe’s neck and applied pressure,
forcing Zoe to watch.

Vicky pulled Dr.
Connor into the bedroom by his necktie and flung him toward the bed. Dr. Connor
landed on his back and Vicky jumped on top of him, she grinded her hips back
and forth and bounced her ass up and down against Allen’s cock.

“You want to get
fucked bad, dirty fucking whore,” Allen said as he grabbed Vicky’s hips.

“Do you know how
long I’ve waited for this?” Vicky said and bit Dr. Connor’s neck.

“Waited for
what? To fuck me?”

“Waited to fuck
you in this bed,” Vicky said and pulled her dress over her head.

“Why do you hate
her so much?” Allen said and reached up and pinched Vicky’s nipples. “You know,
she really thinks she is your friend.”

“She stole my
boyfriend. Friends don’t do that to one another,” Vicky said and pulled at Allen’s
shirt until all the buttons popped off.

“You could have
just unbuttoned it,” Allen said as he sat up and removed his shirt. “Friends
don’t do what to one another?”

“Fuck each other
over...fuck each other’s boyfriends.”

Allen stared
into Vicky’s eyes and realized that she was probably the most insane person he
knew.

“And what are
you doing, Vicky? You’re fucking Zoe over more than she ever did you.”

“She fucking
started it,” Vicky said and bowed her head and sucked on one of Dr. Connor’s
nipples. “I’m finishing it.”

Zoe closed her
eyes as the tears streamed down her face.

“My whole life,”
she said and looked down at her feet. “My entire life I believed her.”

“Your entire
life,” Sam said as she raked her fingernails up and down Zoe’s back, “she tried
to ruin. Turn around and hold out your hands.”

Zoe did as she
was told and Sam placed Allen’s gun in her open palm. Zoe closed her fingers
around the metal and looked at Sam and shook her head.

“Yes!” Sam said
and turned Zoe back to face the door. “You must do this. You must end it.”
