Prologue
Duncan

E
verything changed that night
. Instead of hoping to someday get more, Duncan would live in the moment and take whatever Sebastian was willing to give up that day.

Sebastian gasped when Duncan pinched his nipple and he ground his tight ass against Duncan’s own need.

Duncan enjoyed making his secret lover squirm. There were definite benefits to his family not knowing he was gay. It made their private moments on the cruise ship even more exciting.

Sebastian tried to lean back and kiss Duncan’s neck.

Duncan pushed his head away. He wanted the two of them to watch themselves in the mirror. He wanted to see the moment when the rich party boy realized how much more he needed Duncan than even his father’s money.

Sebastian’s smooth naked chest was covered by Duncan’s massive, tattoo-covered arms. Duncan towered over the smaller man. His own eyes were wild, fueled by passion. His shoulder-length hair fell loose over his face.

Sebastian reached up to stroke Duncan’s beard.

Duncan squeezed Sebastian’s chest tighter to show who was in control. The tables had turned.

For the night, at least. Who knew how long Sebastian would stay around? Duncan lied and told himself it didn’t matter.

I’m living in the moment.

“Are you going to have your way with me?” Sebastian sounded hungry and ready. Trying to show just how ready he was, he rubbed Duncan’s jeans, feeling his rock-hard dick.

No. This is my show.

“Duncan, you can—”

Duncan cupped his hand over Sebastian’s mouth and slapped his hand away.

“Shh. No sweet-talking. No promises. We’re just two men fucking.”

“Mmm.” Sebastian purred against Duncan’s hand while pointing toward the bed.

Duncan had other plans.

He pushed Sebastian up against the counter and pulled the pretty man’s pretty shorts down to his pretty knees.

Sebastian’s eyes went wide. His mouth made a tempting O shape that make Duncan’s dick twitch in excitement.

There it is. He knows how badly he needs me.

“Don’t move,” Duncan growled.

Sebastian nodded.

“Get out of those damn shorts.”

The thrill of giving the orders made Duncan want to strip out of his own, but there would be plenty of time for that.

There would be plenty of time for whatever he wanted.

Duncan stared at Sebastian’s beautiful cock while pressing his fingers, rough from years of heavy labor, against his lover’s entrance.

Sebastian gasped and pushed back against the fingers, begging to be claimed.

For the night at least.

Live for the moment
, Duncan reminded himself and pushed the fingers into Sebastian.

Sebastian

S
ebastian Walker sat
on a metal folding chair in front of a crappy card table that looked like something from the clearance section of some big-box hellhole. An older dude, probably forty, sat across from of him. The other man was balding, had a definite beer belly, and his t-shirt looked like it had a jelly doughnut stain on it.

Jelly Stain leaned in and rested his elbows on the table, looking very interested in what Sebastian had to offer.

Sebastian was the fucking jackpot in this man’s eyes.

Keep wishing
, Sebastian thought.

Sebastian sat back and crossed his hands across his chest, wondering about his sadist friends who had made this his punishment for losing the bet.

He would never bet on basketball games again. What the hell did he know about basketball? He was more of a football man. He liked the thicker, stronger men.

He rolled his eyes as he looked at the loser in the jelly shirt, making no effort to hide his disdain. He chuckled at his punishment and realized that this might actually become the new way to handle losing bets between him and his friends. It would be hysterical to string along the desperate men there for three minutes at a time, making them hope for a better future.

The afternoon had been almost enough to make Sebastian consider looking for a real relationship. If he were to settle down and get married, he’d never risk getting stuck with another afternoon of speed dating at the community center.

Sebastian ignored Jelly Stain’s pathetic attempt at flirtation and looked around, suddenly eager to see what kind of joke fodder was headed his way next. But…
hello
.

The dude at the next table was something special. A total needle in a haystack. The guy must have had some kind of major malfunction to be there, but he was such a big, sexy beast that Sebastian could easily overlook it for a one-night stand. Hell, Sebastian could overlook a hell of a lot if it meant getting the guy to stand between his legs and call him filthy things while fucking his ass.

He imagined that the sexy bear had a big, strong dick that matched the rest of him, the kind that would really stroke Sebastian’s prostate and make him come over and over.

Jelly Stain finally realized that he wasn’t Sebastian’s soulmate when the timer beeped and Sebastian still hadn’t said a word. As soon it went off, the guy dropped his forced smile and cut off his own story midsentence about how great it was living in his mom’s basement so he could help her with the groceries.

Sebastian reminded himself that his dad hadn’t become a power player in the real estate industry just so his son could date basement dwellers. His kid deserved better than guys like Jelly Stain. Sebastian didn’t bother to smile or reply when Jelly Stain told Sebastian to have a great afternoon and moved on to the next table.

Finally the big bear, complete with a nice manly flannel shirt moved to Sebastian’s table. No matter what happened with this guy, Sebastian was leaving after this “date.”

He rolled his eyes just thinking of this debacle of social engineering being called a date. He couldn’t handle any more burnt coffee in Styrofoam cups and hopeless dreams of meeting the perfect match.

Sebastian had tried, failed, and given up on finding a forever man shortly after college. Putting the work in didn’t do a damn thing. Over the last few years, he had been committed to finding plenty of Mr. Right Nows.

If he ever found something more permanent, it wouldn’t be because of any effort on his part anyway. Matches just happened.

People couldn’t just work harder and magically make someone their perfect partner. Glorifying hard work was rich people’s way of keeping the poor people grinding through their mindless tasks so they could get richer.

Well, so guys like his dad could get richer and let it trickle down to his kids. Sebastian admitted this to himself with the smallest twinge of guilt, which he pushed deep down into the dark spots of his heart as usual. That thought had been bugging Sebastian recently, but he had no idea what to do with the emotion it stirred. Yet another thing that no one had prepared him to handle in this life.

Emotions had never been valued by his dad when Sebastian was growing up. His dad said they got in the way of making money. Other than that pep talk, no one had prepared him to handle dealing with his feelings. Unless shoving them out of the way was a valid form of dealing, which didn’t feel quite right to Sebastian. It had certainly led to his past boyfriends asking needy, annoying questions and forcing Sebastian to move on to the next man.

The mountain of a lumberjack stopped in front of Sebastian. He stood with his hands on the back of the chair. His long wavy black hair hugged the side of his face and blended into his thick, wild beard. Those green eyes pierced through all of that hair to reach into Sebastian’s soul, melting glaciers that had formed years before.

He needed the rough and wild-looking man.

Where the fuck did that thought come from?

Sebastian didn’t need any man. Yet, his heart fluttered while staring at the lumberjack’s granite chin and ripped body.

The man oozed sexuality, but Sebastian found himself wanting to talk to him. Sebastian wanted to know what his favorite foods and movies were. He imagined the guy liked to read. Sebastian would have to pretend to like to read, too.

What the hell?

He wasn’t going to pretend to read. He was the predator and the lumberjack was his next prey.

Still, the guy looked like something out of a cartoon.

The only way the moment would have felt more magical would have been if a bird had landed on the lumberjack’s shoulder and started singing a love song, and the guy had grabbed Sebastian and they had danced together around the community center’s black and white laminate tile floor.

“Have a seat, big man.” Sebastian flashed his biggest smile, thankful for all the dental work his dad had made him go through in high school.

“No.” Lumberjack crossed his arms across his chest and glared angrily out over the room.

Sebastian laughed. “That’s my word. This place is a joke, right? I mean who would want any of these guys. Good thing it was free, right? I’m almost tempted to ask for my money back anyway.”

He was rambling. He wanted Lumberjack to say anything and give him any kind of opening, but he couldn’t let himself sound needy. He had to figure out how to take control.

He stood and offered him his hand.

“I’m Sebastian Walker.”

Lumberjack scowled at his hand. It was better than him staring at the room. At least he was looking at Sebastian.

How pathetic have I become? Whatever. I need him. Whatever it takes. Let’s start with his name.

“What do you say we blow this place and I’ll take you out to dinner. Maybe some drinks later and who knows?”

Lumberjack snorted. “Pretty full of yourself, huh. I’m not your type.”

Oh, if only he knew. Sebastian couldn’t make out the details of the tattoos, but he noticed the ink on the stranger’s neck and the back of his hands. He could only imagine all the ink hiding beneath that shirt.

His chest was so wide and thick from real work. He wasn’t working out at gyms with weights designed to target specific muscle groups. This was a man who used his body for real work. Heavy work. Sexy work.

Prior to that moment, Sebastian’s kind of man would have been any pretty boy willing to do whatever Sebastian asked.

No more.

Sebastian had one man and his name was...

Fuck. Tell me your name. Give me something to work with.

Three minutes was not enough. He needed to slow down time. If he could get the guy to want Sebastian one one hundredth as much as Sebastian wanted him, they’d be fucking before dinner... and after.

“What’s your name, sexy?”

“Nunya.”

“There we go,” Sebastian thought. They were finally getting somewhere. He knew his charm would wear the man down. It always did. Between that and his credit cards, everyone loved Sebastian.

Well, except his dad who constantly reminded him what a pathetic disappointment he was.

Fuck you, Dad. I’m about to take another conquest back to the house you paid for and do things you don’t approve of on the sheets I bought with one of the credit cards that gets billed through your accounts.

He promised himself he’d start up a company doing something next week just to get his dad off his back. He knew it was an idle promise, just like every other time he had made it over the years but it let him turn his focus back to Nunya.

“That’s a unique name, Nunya. Is that Ukrainian or something? I know a couple guys from over there. I keep meaning to go visit there myself sometime. Maybe we can take a vacation together someday. My treat.” Rambling again, but maybe the guy would be interested in a sugar daddy. “What’s your last name?”

“Business.”

“Nunya Business.”

Shit. The guy played him like a fool and he couldn’t even be mad at him for it because he looked so damn stoic, cruel, and adorable while doing it. It only made Sebastian want him more. He always loved a challenge, assuming it involved him getting laid in the end.

“You’re a funny bear, Mr. Business, but I’ll call you whatever you want if you let me take you out to dinner. I think there could be something special between us.”

Lumberjack turned and started to walk away, sending earthquakes shaking through Sebastian’s breaking heart. Sebastian couldn’t understand the depth of loss he was feeling. He choose to ignore those pesky emotions and focus on the fact that it if he didn’t get Lumberjack’s attention he was going to miss out on what promised to be a great lay.

But he also had to meet with his dad to talk about the project he wanted to do to. His dad was being a total ass and wanted an explanation about why Sebastian needed all the money.

It was shaping up to be an epically shitty weekend.

“Hey, where are you going?”

“You’re not my type.” Lumberjack didn’t stop walking toward the door.

Sebastian followed after him. “What’s your type?”

“The kind who could sit in a room with fifty other men looking for a date and not piss off every single one of them, for starters. My type is someone who isn’t an asshole to everyone.”

Ouch
.

“I wasn’t even supposed to be here. My friends made a bet and I lost.”

“Glad me and my kind of people can be the butt of you and your rich prick friends’ little jokes. Have fun with them tonight. You don’t need me.”

He pushed through the door but didn’t hold it open for Sebastian.

Sebastian leaned against the door, wondering at the stunning man who had read him like a book and decided that he wasn’t worth reading.

Giving chase would be pointless. He had met a real man, one who looked delicious and seemed to do more with his life than drink and fuck and the man had completely refused to treat him as a human.

Fair enough.

He rarely felt human most days, so why would he expect the stranger to think any differently.

Parker and John jumped out of the convertible they had been waiting in just outside the front window where they could watch. They ran toward the door, pointing and laughing.

He wasn’t ready to deal with them yet.

He returned to his little card table and said, “Hello,” to his next date.

The new guy was too oily. He tore at a napkin nervously while talking and never once made eye contact. He mumbled so quietly that Sebastian had to constantly ask the guy to repeat what he had said.

But Sebastian made an effort to talk to him. He deserved it.

Something had changed in Sebastian after just three minutes with Nunya Business. He had learned how bad it felt to be ignored and didn’t want others to feel like that after talking to him.

After all, they clearly were just looking for a spark of magic. That was the whole point of speed dating. If these guys could put forth the effort in such a futile grasp for love, it wouldn’t kill Sebastian to be civil.

At the end of the three minutes, there was still no way in hell Sebastian was going to date Nathan, but he had been convinced that Nathan was a better person than he was. His toil as a bank teller far outweighed anything that Sebastian ever had accomplished. The care Nathan gave his rescue cats far outreached any kindness Sebastian had ever offered.

He was way out of Sebastian’s league.

Despite the realization and his desire to wallow in self-pity, all he could think of was the mysterious Nunya Business and how he would have traded everything that his dad had given him just to learn Nunya’s real name and spend three more minutes together.

Sebastian rode alone and silent in the backseat of his friend’s convertible after the event ended, letting the wind blow through his hair. His friends quickly got bored of making fun of him while they rode to their favorite bar to meet up with other trust fund babies like themselves.

It was amazing how powerful silence could be. If he ever saw Nunya Business again, he would have to thank him for teaching him that trick as well as for helping him learn how big an asshole he was.

Sebastian had no idea what to do with that information and would probably screw up any attempts to make himself a better man, but just meeting the lumberjack had convinced him to start trying to figure out how to be a human.
