“Two.” I paused. Honesty might work with this guy. “Maybe
three.”

“OK, take your purse and your shoes out of the vehicle and
come with me.”

“Are you gonna arrest me?”

For the second time since he’d stopped me, we locked gazes.
His eyes softened and mouth curved up on one side, “No. I’m officially off duty,
and I was going back home. You’re coming with me.”

That was better than getting a ticket. I concentrated on his
face from behind the blur of my tears. The chiseled cheeks and the dark eyes that
swallowed the night and rough jaw line reminded me of someone. “Mike?”

“Officer Mike.” He grinned.

“Mike Roberts?” I rubbed my eyes, and the remnants of my
mascara smeared on my wrists.

He nodded with the grin that I remembered.

“Oh, my God, it is you!” I jumped up at him, wrapping my
hands around his neck and legs around his waist.

He held me under my behind, supporting my weight. The grip
of his bare hands on my bottom and fingers pressing along the line of my
panties rushed my pulse.

“How? What are you doing here?” I asked between my breaths,
then planted a long wet kiss on his mouth. His minty breath mixed with mine,
cooling my tongue. The smooch deepened and sped my pulse. The Mike I remembered
had never taken my mouth as forcefully as he did now. I parted my lips even
more, allowing him to taste me as much as he wanted. I didn’t know exactly what
had come over me, but seeing someone familiar after breaking up and now getting
stopped for going little over the limit had overwhelmed me with the need to be
comforted. A need that grew stronger between my legs.

Mike’s fingers dug into my bottom. His kiss was more
intoxicating than when we had dated. His tongue pressed against mine in a
tangle that caused passion to burst between my legs. The hard exchange of
pleasure slowly turned into a soft torment that swelled my breasts and
continued downward, and we finally pulled away.

“Wow,” he whispered lowering me to asphalt. My full front
slid against him, feeling the buttons and buckles and hard flashlight attached
to the belt; or perhaps that wasn’t a flashlight.

“I know.” I straightened my skirt and top. “What are you
doing here?”

“I was just transferred from the west coast a few months
ago. I had no idea you lived in Minnesota.”

I loosened my grip and steadied my footing. Mike looked hot
and sexy in his uniform. The way he stood in a wide stance, fingers hooked into
the belt, made me certain he’d be a great stripper. Especially with such growth
that pushed through his pants. His eyes shone, admiring me.

A new urge flew through me when I remembered waking up alone
in a hospital twelve years ago, and I slapped him. “You promised you wouldn’t
leave me!”

He rubbed his cheek. A red mark began to appear. “I’m sorry.
I didn’t have a choice, Val.”

“Not even to say goodbye?” The pain in my own voice struck a
surge of feelings from past memories. I’d been taken away in an ambulance on
our prom night, the night I had promised myself to Mike, and ended up in
surgery with a burst appendix. Mike never made it to the hospital, and after I
recovered, I’d found out he’d moved to the other side of the country.

“It was an emergency. My father passed, and we left the same
night. When I came back a few days later, you had moved. No one knew where.” He
took a step toward me.

“My parents fought again, and my mother decided she needed a
new start on life. I had to go with her.”

“And you moved here?” Mike looked around, but in the dark, the
long fields of corn and wheat blackened into an infinite abyss. The nearest
light was that of an airplane overhead.

“I live on the outskirts of Minneapolis. You?” I asked, hope
rushing through me like a tsunami.

“About a mile that way.” He pointed into the darkness. I
knew there was a small lake in the distance. “Val, I never stopped thinking
about you.”

Mike took both my hands into his. His
matured grip was full of promises that had been denied the night of the prom. A
light breeze swept my extensions against my face and I heard a click. Metal
cuffs circled my wrists.

“You’re arresting me?”

“You just assaulted an officer. Some kind of punishment is
in order.” An indecent grin spread across his face.

The way he said “punishment” made the hairs on my arms stand
in a series of goosebumps. Was he flirting or suggesting something?

“I’m sorry, Mike, but of all people, you should understand
why I slapped you. Wouldn’t a ticket be sufficient instead of the cuffs?”

“And of all people, Ms. President, you should know I have to
abide by rules of the law. You’ll get a ticket, all right. After all, you did
go over the limit. Turn around.”

How fair was it for him to bring up my student council
presidency and use it against me? He held me by the arm and led me toward his
cruiser.

We stopped at the front of the car.

“Mike, there has to be a loophole. You cannot arrest me. I
have to work on Monday. Besides, we’re friends, right?”

“Head down on the hood,” he instructed in his ‘I’m Mr.
Police Officer’ voice.

Dumbfounded, I leaned my chest against the cold metal.
“Mike, please, you don’t have to search me.” But the thought of his hands on me
appealed more each minute. Something about my ex-boyfriend being a cop made me
want him even more now. A memory of the night we got to third base, and his
delicate boy hands caressing my legs, my thighs, feeling me up in the most
sensitive spots on my body, made me tingle with an excitement I hadn’t
experienced since then. I wanted those hands on me again.

“Actually, I do. I got off the clock five minutes ago; so
no, I don’t have to arrest you, but I cannot leave you here or let you drive.”

“What are you going to do?” I felt the side of my face
getting colder. As much as I wanted the coolness to tone down the heat I was
beginning to feel inside my body, it didn’t. The power of arousal won over. The
next breeze that blew lifted my skirt over my behind, and I wiggled to make it fall
down.

I heard Mike take a quick breath.

“I’m taking you home, but I can’t let you in my cruiser
unless you’re checked.”

“And where exactly do you think I would hide weapons?” I asked,
thinking about my barely there mini and the sheer top over my black lace bra.

“Sorry, but rules are rules. I guess I’ll just have to check
all the places you could hide something.” I heard a hint of sarcasm in his
voice, but before I could argue, ‘Mr. I’m in charge’ surprised me again.

Mike crouched on the ground and wrapped both his hands
around my left ankle. He glided them up my calf, over my knee and to my thigh.
The touch sent hot chills up my body. I didn’t think he frisked all his
criminals this way. Besides, my legs were bare; where would I hide a weapon? I
wondered if he enjoyed the view from down below. When his hands came up my leg
as high as they could, his breath left a warm trail on my inner thigh,
collecting at the crotch. I felt myself moisten and perked my bottom higher. He
shifted from one side to the other, skimming across my buttocks and underwear
and made his search down the other leg. The pleasure in my groin increased.

His slightly calloused hands tickled over my skin. Once he
was done, he stood and I felt his buckle against my behind. The click of a
metal key in the handcuffs freed my wrists and Mike helped me off the hood
turning me around.

“I’m sorry about the cuffs, but I’d always wanted to do that
to you. I didn’t mean to scare you,” he’d whispered. His fresh breath caressed
my face. I locked my gaze with his, remembering the boy I’d fallen in love with
as a teen; except today, he was a man.

“If you wanted to cuff me, all you had to do is ask.” I
grinned.

Mike leaned in toward me. His knee rested on the side of the
car, right between my legs. “Cuffs, scarves, anything to keep you at my side. Every
time I stopped a car, I’d dream it might be you. I’ve imagined making love to
you the way we were supposed to after our prom every night.”

My eyes must had grown larger and as dark as his, because I
couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It was as if no time had passed, and we
were dancing on our prom night, locked away in our own world.

“I wish I could turn back the clock,” Mike whispered. His
hands rested on my hips. “I wish we’d finished the prom the way we planned, in
that hotel room. Perhaps things would be different. I wouldn’t be single.”

“You’re single, too?” My breath locked in my lungs.

He leaned in closer. His crotch pressed against my hipbone.
“How come everything that comes out of your mouth sounds so right?”

“It wouldn’t have changed things. You still would have had
to leave.” With our faces only inches away from each other, I’d felt as if we
traveled back in time.

His fingers dug into my flesh under the silk shirt. “True.
But if they’d let me in to see you after your surgery, I could have explained.”

Our foreheads leaned one against another.

“They didn’t let you in?”

Mike shook his head. “You were sleeping. I stayed as long as
I could and almost missed my plane.”

“For me?”

“Of course for you, silly,” he laughed. His breath caressing
my cheeks. “And stupid me made the mistake of not leaving a note. A mistake
that cost me twelve years without you.”

“Mike, I’m sure you’ve met someone else.” I breathed in his
scent. A mix of sweat and morning aftershave.

“No one could ever compare to you, Val.” His lips touched
mine and stayed there. Once again, I was lost in him. Mike’s arms wrapped
around me, and I opened my mouth. His kiss became profound, taking my breath
and soul. The world swirled, and for the first time in a long time I felt lost
and vulnerable and open to anything a man would suggest. But only because it
was Mike.

Was it so wrong to feel so right?

Mike pulled away, his chest rising and falling like he was
struggling to catch a breath. “I can’t let you drive. Will you come with me to
my house? We’ll pick your car up in the morning.”

“Yes.” My voice echoed in my eardrums. Was I about to spend
the night at his house? The longing inside me danced.

I grabbed my purse and pumps out of the car. He opened the
front door of the cruiser, and I sat in the passenger seat as gracefully as I
could. Mike drove to his cabin by the lake in silence. The cottage-style home,
set beyond a closed gate, had an eclectic style of decor. A double glass front door
opened directly into a two-story living room. The smell of apple potpourri
filled the room. Mike flipped a switch on the wall, and a gas fireplace lit the
far end in warm yellow and orange flickers. I placed my purse on a side bench
and took off my hooker pumps, dangling the strap on my finger.

“It’s beautiful. On a cop’s salary, you’ve done well.” I
strolled toward the glowing wall. My feet dug into the bear rug that lay in
front.

“Leave it to you, Val, to be so blunt. I’m the Chief of
Police. Tonight, I was covering for one of the guys.”

He came to my side and took the shoes I was holding out of
my hands. He threw them down on the floor.

“Val, you’re not the kind of woman I’d pictured wearing
those.”

“I only do it to drive men crazy.” I shrugged.

“I’m sure they have their intended effect. Now, what are you
doing, dressed like this, in the middle of the night?” Mike pulled on my sheer
top.

“I was on my way to a club, but my friend cancelled. I
didn’t want to stay home by myself, with the wine. The next thing I know, I’m
driving out of town, speeding.” My eyes softened, looking at him for
forgiveness.

“Over the limit, intoxicated.” He sighed. “Val, you could
have been really hurt.” Mike held me by my shoulders, squeezing just a tad. He
pulled me into a tight embrace, and suddenly there was no other place I wanted
to be.

“I know. I wasn’t thinking.”

“I’m glad your boyfriend broke up with you,” he said.

So am I.

He squeezed harder. “So you’re telling me, you’re very
vulnerable right now. And if I were to do to you what I want to, I’d be taking
advantage of you.”

Mike’s threat to take advantage of me sounded like a gift.
The offer increased the need to be satisfied by the one man I’d promised myself
to. I wanted him to exploit me and make me forget the night that had led up to
this. Getting lost in his body was exactly what I needed. Weaving my fingers
into his hair, I pressed harder against him.

“Make me forget. Do with me as you please,” I whispered,
covering his top lip with mine. I shifted my weight, forward forcing him to
hold me tighter so we wouldn’t fall down. My tongue teased the inside of his
mouth before sliding in deeper.

Mike pulled the sheer blouse up and over my head. When his
mouth left mine I felt deprived. I wanted to kiss his forceful lips all night
long, the way we had in high school. My nipples hardened. If he touched them
now, I would lose any self-control I had. Instead, his fingers danced along my
back, down to the zipper on my behind.

“You filled out nicely, Val.” He admired my front and
lowered his head to kiss my chest.

“So have you.” I leaned back. My hand massaged around his
zipper, following the growth under the fabric. “Is that a gun in your pocket,
or are you just happy to see me?”

“I can assure you, the only gun I have on me is one I want
to fire inside you.”

Mike’s mouth traced just above the lace of my bra. A smooth
zip on my behind loosened my skirt, and it dropped to the floor. Mike kissed me
again, the longing of his mouth filling mine more each minute. A firm grasp on
my behind lifted me, and my legs wrapped around him again. I pulled my arms
higher, holding onto his neck. He knelt on the floor as I straddled him. His
hands never left my bottom, massaging and digging further under the fabric. My
fingers danced toward his front, unbuttoning his shirt as quickly as they
could. Once it was open, I slid my palms along his sculpted chest, feeling the
tickle of a few scattered hairs. I pulled on the neckline of his shirt, sliding
it off.
