“Luke!”

Luke’s eyes closed as Emily screamed his name.

Emily sucked in a deep breath as Angela handed her the flowers.
“Evan’s out there,” her sister said, her tone and her eyes filled with disapproval.

Emily shrugged. It didn’t matter.

“You sure you want to do this?”

Emily smoothed down the fabric of her dress over her expanded stomach. “Do I really have a choice?”

“Well, you could always wait until after the baby comes.”

“No. I’ll be married when I deliver my child.”

“Have it your way, then.” Angela smiled. “Still, with everything you’ve been through, no one would blame you to wait or elope.” She winked at her big sister.

Emily took Angela’s hand and covered it with her own. “And waste the church date you wrangled from Father Peters for your original wedding plan? Besides, mom and dad are more than happy to give you the biggest May wedding they can afford after this, just to clear the family name.” She laughed. “I’ll be fine. This is the right thing to do.”

“Let’s do this then. You’ve more courage than I’ll ever have.” Angela hugged Emily, her little body shaking.

Emily didn’t blame her. The law enforcement and media attention after the shootout cast a bad light on this whole affair. The New Haven paper even printed a story with the headline, ‘Knocked Up Spawn Cutie to Marry’. Her father was never more mortified.

Angela walked before her and opened the door, then led her down the corridor to the inner entrance of the church. Father Peters allowed the ceremony here on the proviso that the wedding itself was small and Emily didn’t object. She was too tired these days to handle a big wedding anyway. In the end, it didn’t matter.

Emily looked down the long aisle to the man that would be her husband. The organ music struck up and Angela started down the aisle. Emily waited the twenty paces rehearsed and walked after Angela. Despite the fact she knew exactly what she was doing, she had butterflies in her stomach and she found herself on the verge of tears. She kept her head lowered to try to control her hormone-driven emotions. It took longer than she wanted to get here. Father Peters was very insistent that they attend the Pre-Cana classes, the marriage preparation classes required by the church.

Finally, she reached the step that led to the altar and put her foot on it. A hand reached out to hers and steadied her as she stepped up. She looked up to Luke’s smiling face. He looked so gorgeous in his tux she couldn’t believe that in a few minutes he’d be her husband.

In the long week she waited in the hospital as Luke fought for his life, she said many prayers. One of them was that she’d be standing with Luke at this altar. She’d be forever grateful God had answered them.

Of course, Luke teased her by wearing his new Hades’ Spawn jacket to the wedding, the one with the newly added ‘vice president’ patch over his name. He’d be in charge of the club until Okie got his new trial. The lawyer Luke hired thought he could make a case to get Okie released.

Emily glanced back at the guests, the men of the club who left and recently came back because of the new leadership, and the return to the old one-piece patch. Saks stood next to Luke as best man, looking devilishly handsome. The others, Pepper included, stood in the rows of pews. He hadn’t quit the DEA yet, though, because he took the fall for the botched DEA operation, he was consigned to a desk job. But he still worked with Luke in the shop on the weekends.

Emily smiled. All the members behaved and kept their colors out of the church, despite their teasing. But she suspected they’d appear at the informal reception at the patched-up clubhouse.

Evan sat in a back pew looking miserable. Time had healed the injuries to his body. She wasn’t so sure about his heart. But weddings are public occasions, you can’t stop people from showing up at the church.

Mrs. Diggerty gave her the brightest smile imaginable, pleased as she could be to be invited to this intimate gathering. Emily could do no less. She owed her so much.

She glanced at her mother and her father sitting in the front pew. Her mother gave her a weak smile while her father sat stoned faced. She knew Sam Dougherty appeared under protest, but in the face of the priest’s blessing, there was little he could do. That didn’t matter anyway. There was nothing now to keep Emily from marrying the man she loved.

“Shall we being?” Father Peters asked.

“Hey,” Luke whispered and Emily turned back to him. He wiped away her tear with his hand. “What’s this?”

“I’m just so damned happy.”

Father Peters cleared his throat and gave her a disapproving look.

“Sorry, Father,” she whispered, her cheeks burning.

He nodded, pressing his lips tight to keep the smile twitching at the corners of his mouth from curling upwards. Father Peters cleared his throat once more. “Let us begin again, shall we?”

And they did.
