“You look really hot in my shirt, Rachel.” His eyes roam my body and I flush at the attention. He sits up and slides out of my bed, still totally naked. I can tell he wants me when I look down at his growing erection. He comes over to me and lifts the shirt up over my head. He leans down and puts his lips close to my ear, whispering, “You look even hotter naked.”

Before I know it, we’re back in bed and spending the next hour or so exploring each other’s bodies in the daylight.

We have just enough time to shower and get dressed before the floor meeting in the afternoon, which goes way better than the last meeting. Jake and I are talking together instead of over each other and the smiles we give each other are genuine and full of lo…ike.

Jake talks about the upcoming Wednesday, when we will be volunteering at his work. We have a big group going. The center is only a fifteen minute walk from the dorm, so we don’t need to arrange transportation.

We end the meeting, reminding the group about the rules for the open mic night on Friday. No cursing, no vulgar lyrics, and no attacking other performers. We had a pretty messy situation last semester between two girls. One of the girls had slept with the other girl’s boyfriend. It got ugly.

Jake and I clean up from the meeting and head back to our rooms, holding hands. Sigh. I am so happy. When we get back, Jenna is standing at my door, demanding some best friend time. I kiss Jake, and reluctantly leave him in his room as I head with Jenna up to hers.

The moment her door closes, she pounces. “Everything from the moment you left the bar with Nate. And, go!” she says smiling and sitting on the bed as I take the chair.

I tell her about the conversation I had with Nate, falling asleep in the hall in front of Jake’s door, and even about Natalie. I swear she growled when I told that part of the story. And if it had been her in this situation instead of me, both Jake and Natalie would have gone to sleep with claw marks all over their faces. Jenna keeps her nails sharp.

I tell her about every little thing that happened between me and Jake last night, except the condom thing. I’m pretty sure she would slap me for that.

“And, Jenna, he made me come,” I say with a big smile on my face.

“What!?!?!?!” she screeches.

“I know, it’s never happened with a guy before. But he knew how to move just right... Anyways, I knew you would definitely want to hear that part,” I say triumphantly.

“I am so proud,” she says wiping a fake tear from under her eye.

And then I go on to break her heart, telling her that she will only get the abbreviated version from now on since he is my boyfriend (last night didn’t count since we hadn’t established our relationship yet) and we have to keep some things just to ourselves.

“And the stuff that happened this morning is considered part of the boyfriend experience, so that’s all your getting for now.”

“But I tell you all about my sexcapades, Rachel! This is wrong! I want to hear more about that man. I didn’t even get to hear about how he is with his mouth,” she pouts.

I smile. Jenna cares a little too much about this, but she seems so heartbroken. “Ok fine. I’ll pick one of my sexcapades each week to tell you about. Will that make you happy?” I ask.

“I guess…” she grumbles.

“And I can already tell you how he is with his tongue, but this counts as this week’s story.”

“Ohmygodyes! Tell me he did not disappoint. A man that looks like that has to have a talented tongue. I swear if you start telling me Slobber Bob, or Fumble Tongue, or One-inch-above-the-mark Guy type stories, I will die!” she falls over onto her pillows dramatically.

“He definitely knows how to use more than just his tongue. I got the whole mouth experience. Lips, tongue, and teeth. He knew exactly where to put them and exactly when to use them. He had me thrashing my hips, pulling his hair, screaming his name. It was amazing.” And just thinking about it has me wanting him to do it again.

“I can die now knowing that my best friend has been eaten out properly,” she says seriously.

“Jenna! Oh my god!”

“What? Based on the experiences you’ve had in the past, one would think that you were ruined forever. Tell me how hot he looked with his head between your legs.”

I blush, and after a brief pause say, “He looked perfect.”

“Yeah he did! Did you return the favor?” she asks me.

“I didn’t get the chance! He was up and in me before I could even move properly! Then we had the meeting. Maybe tonight? But then you won’t be able to hear the story until next week,” I say laughing at the look on her face. She looks so crestfallen. “Anyways, it’s almost dinner and I promised my boyfriend that I would go out with him.”

“Whatever! Just text me a yes or no if it happens later, please...” she begs.

“Fine! I’ll let you know about the fellatio,” I say to her as I open her door.

“YESSSSSS!!!!!” I hear her squeal as I walk down the hall and back to my floor.

And I can’t help it when my thoughts wander.

My mind is on my mouth on my man’s equipment.

Chapter 10

I get back to my room and start to get ready for dinner. It’s raining pretty hard today, so we decided that he would just go downstairs and grab something so we could eat in his room. I’m happy with that plan, since my hair doesn’t fair very well in the rain. Also, this will give us more privacy than eating in the commons, or at a restaurant.

I turn on my music and start to run a brush through my hair since I didn’t get a chance to do anything with it after my shower earlier. I start thinking about last night and this morning, when I realize that Jake and I haven’t really done any talking. We had that two line conversation about wanting to be together, and him calling me his girlfriend, but that’s about it.

And now that I think about it, I don’t know too much about him. I only know surface type stuff. I don’t even know why he doesn’t do relationships. He barely knows anything about me. What if he gets to know me better and changes his mind about being with me? Then we break-up and it’s awkward and Jenna tries to get me to dye my hair?

I am freaking out.

And instead of going on a date, he asked me to dinner in his room. It’s more private. Privacy for what? Obviously sex.

Breathe, Rachel. Self pep-talk time: Just because you are alone with him, doesn’t mean you can’t talk. You can eat and talk, and then have sex later. After all the talking is done. And you talked about how he feels about you and what makes you different from all the other girls he’s "dated." And when you are satisfied with the answers, then comes the sex.

Talk, then sex. Talk, then sex. This will be my mantra.

Knock, knock
.

“Open up, girlfriend!” Jake says knocking on my door.

“Coming!” I look in the mirror on the back of my door. I look nice, relaxed. I look like I want to talk. Then sex with my new boyfriend.

I open the door and Jake is standing at my door, looking perfect in a light brown T-shirt and dark wash jeans, holding a daisy out for me. We smile at each other as I take my flower.

I lean down and breathe in the sweet smell before setting it on my desk. “Thank you, boyfriend,” I say smiling even bigger.

And the fall begins.

I will fall in love with him. I know it. I can’t wait.

“I never thought I would like being a boyfriend, but I like being your boyfriend,” he says taking my hand and leading me out of my room.

“We’ve been together less than twenty-four hours. How are you so sure you like it so much already?” I ask.

“Because I don’t have to pretend with all that
friends only
shit that I came up with,” he says opening his door. “And I like that I get to do things like
this
for you,” he finishes, leaning down and kissing me before leading me into his room.

I follow him in and when I look up, my mouth drops and I gasp. His room is filled with bouquets of daisies, the only source light coming from the candles he has lit all over the room and placed on every surface. In the center of his floor is a picnic blanket with a few pillows, a bottle of wine, and two glasses.

“Happy first date,” he says smiling at me. “I picked up sandwiches from downstairs. I’ve seen you get turkey before. I hope that’s okay.”

He sounds nervous. I realize I still have that stunned look on my face. I turn to him and smile. “It’s perfect. This is perfect.” I wrap my arms around him, pulling myself up on my toes to kiss him.

The smile he gives me in return melts my heart.

And the fall continues.

“I wanted to do something special. There’s been a lot of shit between us the last few weeks, and I just wanted our first date to be perfect. You mean a lot to me. I haven’t ever wanted to try this with anyone. And I might fuck this up some along the way. I mean, hell, I just cursed twice while I’m trying to make this romantic declaration. I just want this to be right with us. I think we can be happy together,” he says looking in my eyes and smiling. “I guess that’s all,” he shrugs.

“I think we can be happy together too, Jake.” The kiss that follows is sweet and full of promises we want to make to each other. Promises we want to keep.

“So, girlfriend, have a seat and we can eat dinner and talk a little.”

“Okay,” I say smiling. This is going so well. Jake is perfect. I guess I expected him to fail at the boyfriend thing since he has never done it before. I thought I would have to walk him through everything, and then he goes and surprises me with the most romantic first date I have ever had.

Maybe he just needed the right girl to bring this out of him.

I am so glad that girl is me.

We sit down and start eating our sandwiches, the silence stretching between us with each bite. Why is this so awkward?

Jake breaks the silence. “So this is kind of awkward. We don’t usually have a hard time finding things to talk about. Why is this so weird?”

At least it isn’t just me. I shrug.

We look at each other for a second longer and then we both start laughing.

“Oh my god!” I say between fits of laughter. “I thought it was just me!”

“No, definitely not just you,” he says. “How about we do the question thing again? I want to get to know you better, and since we already know all the first date type stuff about each other, we can answer the remaining questions we have.”

“I like that idea. Do you want to go first again?” I ask.

“Sure. First things first. What are you doing tomorrow at around three in the afternoon?”

Not the type of question I was expecting. “Um… nothing. My last class gets out at two-fifteen.”

He smiles. “Good. I have appointments for us the Student Health Center to get tested.”

“Um, okay?” I know we talked about getting tested, but this is not helping with the awkwardness. It’s kind of making it worse.

“We talked about getting tested, right? Is it weird that I made your appointment? I thought it would be thoughtful. Show you I care about your health.” He pauses. “Well, that explanation sounds weird. I’ll cancel your appointment and you can schedule it whenever you want,” he says looking down, his sandwich suddenly becoming very interesting.

I feel weird about it, but it
is
sweet in a way. “Jake, don’t cancel it. I’ll go. I guess it’s just not the type of thing I thought I would be talking about on our first date.”

“Yeah, I guess this is kind of weird first date conversation,” he chuckles, looking back up into my eyes.

“Kind of. Anyways, my turn to ask you a question. What does your tattoo mean?” I ask, poking him in the ribs where I know his tattoo is.

He lifts up his shirt, showing the tattoo and I finally get a chance to read it. The script is beautiful, scrawling across his muscled body.

Ce qu’on ne peut dire et ce qu’on ne peut taire, la musique l’exprime

“It’s French. A quote from the poet, Victor Hugo. It means: Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.”

“That’s beautiful, Jake. How did you pick it?”

“It is on a plaque that hangs above my grandparents’ piano. I wanted to get a tattoo that had something to do with music. When I was a teenager, I was a
hellion
, according to Gramps. That was when he taught me how to play guitar. He tried piano, but it wasn’t my thing. Anyways, music allowed me to express all the feelings I was having about my mom and dad without talking. Talking is for chicks,” he jokes. “I thought the quote very appropriate.”

“How do you feel about your mom and dad?” I know there is something there. Maybe the reason for the sadness I saw in his eyes that first Friday night we hung out in his room.
I’m not good enough

“Excuse me, little miss questions. I answered two in a row. I believe it is my turn for an inquiry,” he scolds, with laughter in his eyes.

“I guess…” I say, sighing, joking right back.

“I know we already yelled about this, but it’s been bothering me. What happened after the show last night?” his voice is low, but he isn’t pissed off like he was last night when he brought it up. He seems sad and a little confused.

“Well, Nate came up to me and asked if I wanted to leave. He saw me watching you while you were playing. He knew you were singing to me. Before you guys went on, I had told him there wasn’t anything going on between us. That you just wanted to be friends,” I explain.

“It didn’t look like you were talking when I walked up to you guys in the back hall,” he comments, his face darkening.

“Well, we weren’t talking
then
. And Jake, you can’t get mad at me for kissing my date. You also can’t get mad at him. We left together, but all he did was walk me to the building and tell me he couldn’t date me now that he knew you had feelings for me,” I say, remembering the sad look on his face when we talked.

“He called me today. I just picked up, told him to fuck off and hung up. I thought when he left with you he was trying to convince you I wasn’t good for you. I thought you were covering for him last night,” he says sounding a little embarrassed. “I can’t believe I thought Nate would do something like that. He’s my best friend. God, I’m such a dick…” he says quietly, his voice trailing off.
