“He’s still in surgery. They said he should be out any minute.”

“How, where?”

“He was shot in his side. Between the smoke and loss of blood he passed out, but woke up in the ambulance. He was asking me not to tell you, like somehow this was a secret.”

“Really, after the shit he gave me for not telling him about Mann in the first place?” I ought to kick his ass.

A half hour later, he was wheeled into a private room.

He groggily called for me. “I’m here, Tim.” I stepped to his side.

“Babe, I’m sorry. Come, climb in bed with me. I need to hold you.”

I stepped up and laid on his uninjured side. The nurse rolled her eyes, but gave me a smile. Bitch was jealous. It was all good. I got my man and he’s alive. “Don’t be sorry, just get better.” I laid my head on his chest and he wrapped his arm around my waist, tucking me into his body.

“I’m so glad you’re alive. Our baby needs his father,” I said softly.

“What?!” I laughed when he looked at me with in surprise.

“Surprise!”

Epilogue

Vanessa

I looked down at the white stick below. Seeing the two pink lines seemed to be a given. In our ten years of marriage, I’d been pregnant seven times. Apparently birth control was ineffective. I was that small percentage that fucked up the birth control numbers. It never worked. Breastfeeding had been the only thing to stop me from getting knocked up, but it didn’t last long. The biggest gap between our children had been one whole year. Number seven would be coming.

“Mama, I gotta pee!” Erica squealed.

“Use the other bathroom,” I told her through the door.

“But Mama. My chair is in there!” Damn it, rolling my eyes I opened the door for my three-year-old daughter. She was our only girl and a big pain in our asses. Cam and Simon cracked up every time I complained about the tiny terror. They said she was just like me when I was little.

She rushed passed me and sat down on her princess potty chair. She gave me a big smile, then the nosy little one snatched something off the sink. “Oh mama, what kind of toothbrush is this?” Shit, I forgot to take the damn test off the sink.

“It’s not a toothbrush. Why does it have two pink lines mommy?”

“Why don’t you give that to me? It’s for only Daddy and I, Okay?”

“Okay.” She finished using the bathroom and washed her hands using her step stool to reach the faucet. We got her the step stool because she tried to ninja it up to reach everything.

We opened the bathroom door and Tim was standing outside the door. “Wow, what’s with the party in the bathroom?”

“It’s not a party, Daddy. I had to use the potty, and mommy has a funny toothbrush with two pink lines for you.”

I blushed and looked up at Tim with a shrug holding the test in my hand. He moved around little miss and pulled me into his arms.

“Yes, I told you that I’d knock you up again.” He cheered, fist pumping and everything. The man was turned on by my growing belly.

“Daddy, what is knock up?” We forgot the little parrot was still standing there.

“Nothing sweetheart.” We both blushed. With her we had to watch everything we said or did. Last week she caught us in bed together and asked why we were wrestling with no clothes. For a huge home, there doesn’t seem to be enough space.

“Okay. I’m going to go play.” She skipped down the hall to her playroom.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do with her.”

“She’s brilliant. I love it, but she can’t keep a secret,” I reminded him.

“Well that’s a good thing.” So he thought.

“Yeah, say that when she gets the code to the safe and shares it with everyone.”

“You got me on that one, Vanessa.”

“Now why did you come looking for me?”

“I wanted to serve you breakfast in bed.”

“Oh really? What’s for breakfast?”

“Sausage.”

“We don’t need a bed for that,” I winked, closing and locking the bathroom door behind him. I slammed him against the door then dropped to my knees.

“Yes, baby. Suck it,” he growled.

Tim

“Where is that woman at?” I grumbled to myself. Married a decade and I miss her if we spend more than a few hours apart. With my inheritance, I didn’t have to work, so we lived very well off the interest. I loved spending time with the kids and my beautiful wife. All the females in the family decided to go on a shopping spree. Having nine females try on clothes took all day, especially since five of them were young.

“She’ll be home soon, Dad,” my eldest child, Tim said. “You always get anxious when Mom leaves the house.”

“That’s because your mother was the best thing to happen to me and I can’t lose her.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

“If it wasn’t for her you wouldn’t be here. So if I didn’t have her I would have all of you kids.”

“I know, Dad. I just like messing with you. Mom feels the same way. Remember when you and uncle Cam went to go spar? Mom was pacing the house waiting for you to come home. Then you guys had a “talk” for hours.” He air quoted me.

“Junior. I don’t know what you think you know, but mommy and I go to go talk.”

“I’m not that little, Dad. I don’t know the details or whatever, but I know what parents do when they’re alone.”

“What do you think we do alone?”

“My classmate says it’s how you make babies. He says you ‘bump uglies’.” I didn’t know whether to laugh or to be mortified, but I was certainly glad Vanessa wasn’t here when he said that along with the parrot as well. She would walk around the house shouting it at the top of her lungs.

“What he said is an inappropriate way to say that, but it’s true. That’s all you need to know for now. You’re too young to be thinking about that.”

“Dad. I don’t think about it. It’s kind of gross. Anyways, I just like the way you and mommy seem so happy all the time. That’s what I want when I grow up. To have someone like her who’s just as happy as I am.”

“You’re a good boy.” I said, hugging my son. “Remember, buddy. Never become cold.”

I let him go just as the front door opened. “Honey, we’re home!”

Junior and I met them at the door. Vanessa and Erica were alone with all their bags. “Are there more bags in the truck?”

“No, Daddy. Only the weak make two trips,” the terror said with a big grin, her teeth showing brightly. Vanessa laughed behind her bag filled hand.

“Well, mini-monster, take your strong butt up to your room with your goodies you got and put them away.”

“Yeah, mom and dad need to have a talk,” Junior added.

“Junior, take your smart ass up there and help her,” I ordered. He laughed, but still did as I asked, taking the bags from the little one.

Vanessa raised her brow. “You don’t want to know. But just so you know, I don’t want to talk today, I want to check out the pretty maternity clothes you bought. In our room. Right now,” I finished, tilting my head toward the staircase leading to our room.

Thankfully the others were with Cam and grandpa. We’d get the rest of our large brood back tomorrow. “Come on, Mrs. Russell. I want to watch you model for me.”

“So I guess our ‘talks’ are out of the bag?”

“Just Junior. He learns more than he should in school. Don’t know what cursive is, but knows about bumping uglies.”

“What!”

“Yes, exactly. Now move your ass up the stairs. I want you, so much.”

“I missed you, too.” I helped her up the stairs with her bags then dropped them as soon as we entered our bedroom. Turning around, I pinned her to the bedroom door.

“I love you, Vanessa. I’ve waited all day for this.” I took her mouth with mine. “No more waiting.”
