There are three people to whom I owe a special debt. Ru Roberts, with exceptional generosity, provided the two things I needed most: she gave me a place to write and let me alone. Paul Rhys offered further sanctuary and fine insights which nourished many of my own. Finally, Gillon Aitken, my agent, went far beyond the call of duty.
