That’s not the reason I feel so attached to this land. Yet just as medieval Welshmen may have settled here because the hills and valleys reminded them of home, I do wonder if the land of my childhood calls to me here as well. At times, it feels like an echo in my soul. It reverberates through the mountain and moves my heart in the way of lush orchestras or a hundred strong male voices singing an ancient tongue. High on the watchtower’s bluff, looking down on the river valley and across the great expanse of thick autumn leaves and evergreens, I breathe in the world as it once was and give thanks for the joy of its riches and for being here, surrounded by its beauty.
