Aiden howled in surprise, and pain, and let Shayna’s body fall to the floor. Cain dropped to his knees beside her, and scooped her up into his arms, where she would be safe. The hawk flew out of the open balcony window, just as Noah finally broke through the door. Cain held Shayna.

“I love you. I’m so sorry I let this happen,” Cain told her.

Shayna returned Cain’s hold tighter than ever, and smiled at him. Tears of joy and relief running down her face. Noah stood in the doorway watching the two, and seeing blood on Shayna’s neck, he gasped.

“Is she okay?’ he asked Cain, pointing at Shayna’s neck.

Cain touched the steady trickle of blood on Shayna’s neck, that was running down her collarbone and onto Aunt Mill’s beautiful, elegant dress.

“He didn’t have time to take any blood,” Cain said, “I think he only bit her.

He looked into the ocean of blue diamonds in Shayna’s eyes, and  held her face in his hand. He pulled her closer to his face, and leaned her head back. His mouth opened slightly, and he moved in. This is going to be phenominal! He thought, anticipating the kiss to come.

Cain’s bottom lip brushed Shayna’s, and as soon as it did, Shayna’s whole body stiffened, and she began frantically grabbing for Cain. A horrifying scream escaped her lips, and her face twisted, in agonizing pain.

“Shayna!” Noah and Cain both cried out.

Noah ran to the other side of them. He saw that Shayna’s nose was bleeding. His stomach flipped, and he lost the french dinner he and Melina had shared, on the white carpet.

This is it. Shayna thought. I’m turning. She tried to speak but was unable to. She wanted to tell Cain, that she was sorry too. She wanted to tell him that she loved him. Her back arched, and her body started to twist in an unhumanly way.

“Shayna,” his harmonic voice said, “Stay with me Shayna.” she could still feel his cold touch.

“Oh my God,” she heard Noah cry.

“I love you Shayna,” Shayna loved his voice, “I won’t leave you, I promise.”

The sound of Cain’s voice remained with her, and everything else, faded away.

Epilogue

I never realized that being born immortal meant that my mortal self would have to die. When it felt like my heart was being ripped from my chest, I knew that I was dying. The last thing I saw when my heart stopped was Cain’s face. His emerald green eyes were so full of sadness to see me in so much pain. He did come back for me.

It felt like my veins were on fire, and as the fire raced for my heart, I could still hear Cain telling me that he loved me. I‘m going to miss him while I’m gone, but I will return…in a new beginning.
