Prologue

Derek Christopoulos slowly ran his hand down the silky back of the woman sleeping next to him. It was smooth, flawless, and sexy – exactly the way he liked it.

His fingers drifted further down until he reached the bed covers. As he inched them further down, the upper slopes of her bottom were slowly exposed.

Looking at them, Derek had a feeling her skin here would turn a pretty shade of pink if he gave it one little spank. Nothing particularly hard or painful, just something with enough pressure for her skin to react.

He thought of dominating her, possessing her, and fucking her like she was his and would always be his, and his cock jutted to life, fully engorged and aching for a pussy to pound into.

The woman in his bed stirred, and Derek waited for her to face him, his heart beating madly against his hard chest. Maybe with this woman, his instincts would finally be wrong. She could finally be the one—

She started to smile at him, but her smile disappeared and was replaced by a wary, nervous look on her face when her gaze met Derek’s.

Derek lowered his head. He was breathing hard, silently, his fists clenching against the bed covers in impotent frustration.

She was
not
the one.

It was as if his ideal girl was a ghost, someone who did not exist. Disappointment hit him at the realization, his failure a bitter pill to swallow. It made him want to punch something, to roar out his anger. It made him want to lash out…but he didn’t.

Because he was Derek Christopoulos, and everyone was counting on him to pretend his dark side didn’t exist.

When he looked up, the darkness had completely disappeared from his storm-colored eyes. The girl in front of him visibly relaxed, and it was pathetically easy to read the way she convinced herself that she had just been imagining things.

Derek Christopoulos had not looked at her like he wanted to devour her, had not looked at her like he would take pleasure in her pain.

He was just a seventeen-year-old kid, for God’s sake. She had to be crazy, thinking such thoughts. He was a kind and gentle soul, a young carefree playboy who had everything – money, looks, fame, and a loving family. He wouldn’t have any reason to be so twisted.

****

Derek found the look of relief in the girl’s gaze sickening. With a smile that didn’t reach his eyes, he pulled the woman close to him, kissing her so he wouldn’t have to see her face. Fucked her so neither of them would have to think.

But it wasn’t enough. It was never enough these days, and the feeling of emptiness persisted even when hours had passed, his lover was gone, and he was getting inside the limousine with his parents.

“My baby boy looks so handsome,” his mother teased, pinching his cheeks. His father, seated next to Samantha, rolled his eyes and gave his a son a dry look.
Humor her. You have no choice. She’s your mother.

Derek’s lips twitched, but he obediently humored his mother, like he always did. He also pushed away all other dangerous thoughts in his mind, his discipline in keeping his personal problems far away from his public persona absolute.

Unfortunately, the pinching still hadn’t stopped after five full minutes and Derek groaned, “
Mom
.”

Samantha giggled, and even the normally aloof Richard smiled.

Derek moved to sit across his parents, deciding that it was best for his cheeks to put as much distance between himself and his mother.

“If you keep doing that to him, he’ll end up moving out next time,” Richard murmured teasingly to his wife, but his words were half-serious.

“I can’t help it,” she murmured back. “My little boy is just too cute for words.” She reached for her husband’s bowtie as she spoke. It didn’t really need arranging, but she just wanted an excuse to touch Richard. She had always been a proud woman, but while she was cheerfully open with her affections with Derek, she couldn’t manage to be the same with Richard. Even after all these years, she still felt self-conscious with Richard, still felt that she had to prove herself worthy of him because he had always been irritatingly successful in everything he did while she had been the proverbial ugly duckling of her family.

Richard surprised Samantha by catching her hand and bringing it to his lips. When her startled gaze met his, he said quietly, “Do not be nervous.”

“I’m not.”

“You are my wife. The woman I will only love. Nobody will look down on you.” He pressed another kiss to her fingers. “I promise you,
kyria,
the time will come when you will look back on this and find yourself laughing at how unreasonably nervous you were.”

She snorted.

His lips twitched. “Ah. That sound…a fond reminder of why I chose to marry an American heiress instead of a biddable Greek maiden—”

She snorted again, pulling her hand away from his hold. But the flush in her cheeks was unmistakable proof of the pleasure Samantha felt with her husband’s words. Richard wasn’t much for talk, but oh, when he spoke, there wasn’t a time when he failed to make her blush.

Her flush deepened when she glanced at Derek and saw the way he was rolling his eyes at her. “You always fall for whatever Dad says,” her son said.

“Of course she does,” Richard said mildly. “She is my wife. She’s meant to giggle and blush about everything I…” He ended with a grunt, Samantha having elbowed him painfully.

The ride to the party remained noisy with Samantha’s passionate protests and Richard’ deadpan responses. They were opposites in every way, and yet the love his parents shared was undeniable, an intangible force that sometimes made Derek’s heart clench. They were so damn perfect, it made him wonder why God had to punish them with a son as dark and twisted as he was.

When they reached their destination, Derek’s mask was in place. No matter what, he would make sure that he would never shame his parents, never do or say anything that would have them realize he was not normal.

The three of them stuck together on the red carpet as was their usual, portraying a united front that was nowadays rarely glimpsed among society’s most elite classes.

“Such a sweet boy. But what can you expect? His parents are perfect. It’s a no-brainer he’s just as perfect as he is.”

“I wonder if he’ll stay that way, though. Don’t you think that boy seems a little…it’s just like he’s hiding something.”

“I don’t care if he’s underage. I just know he’s going to fuck me senseless. He has that look about him. He’s nothing like his saintly father. I’d bet my money on that.”

The first time Derek heard people speak about him, he had wondered if they knew he could hear them. Had wondered if they wanted him to hear them and were all waiting for him to react. To drop his guard and reveal the truth about himself.

But now, he no longer cared. Now, he knew how to play the game as well as they did. He was an angel to those who took him at face value, but to those who saw a little too much – he was something else.

Like the sultry-looking woman standing a few feet from him, a taunting smile on her ruby-red lips.

Those who doubted him were usually women, and they all wanted the same thing.

He walked straight to her.

They looked into each other’s eyes, and there was no need to say a word.
