y eyelids fluttered as I began to fall asleep. The sun was already stretching up over the horizon and the last star was barely visible. Behind me, Rollan kissed the back of my neck, his arms holding our bare bodies close.
I made a silent wish on the faint star. “I wish for our love to always be strong and honest.” It was simple. It was enough. I knew what love meant and I knew it was enough to be together and still be true to our own dreams.
Sleep took me away.
“Squawk! Wicked witch ahoy! Better go see.” Tiago repeated his announcement, penetrating the fog of sleep until I understood.
“Who could be here on a Sunday morning?” I threw on the nearest piece of clothing, Rollan’s button-down shirt. It was enough to cover the bare minimum.
“Let’s go, witches. Front and center!” I’d heard that voice before, but what was it doing in our house?
When I finally got down the stairs, I saw Gina stumbling out of her room wearing Greg’s large NASCAR shirt. I gave her a wink and she blew me a kiss. We skidded to a stop when we saw Zelda standing in the living room.
I glanced at Gina, knowing we both had the same silent question running through our minds.
How the fuck did Zelda get in the house?
“Do you two realize how deep in shit you are right now?” the woman asked.
“Zelda? What’s going on?”
“I’ve known from the day you got here that you were an outside witch. The only reason I overlooked it is because you saved Greg’s life.”
“Greg? What do you mean?” I was confused. I’d threatened Greg, but that was all.
“Greg! I know you’re in there. Come out.”
“Um, hold on. I think he’s a little tied up at the moment,” Gina laughed, returning to her room.
“Oh my God! You tied him up too?” I was laughing with her.
“We took turns.”
Greg soon joined us. “Greg, show them,” Zelda commanded. Suddenly, Greg shrunk down and took the form of a raccoon.
“Holy shit!” Gina shouted. I immediately began thinking of my scientific research. Gina could easily coerce Greg into submitting to all kinds of tests.
“Do you recognize him now, Jessica? You should. You ran him over. Like I said, I was willing to tolerate your presence until last night. I have witnesses who say you had a friend visit you, a Union witch. Not only did she visit, she put an enchantment on Greg. Tell me right now what she did. She better not be spying on us, that damn Union witch!”
Greg once again assumed human form. “I think I know what kind of spell she put on me. I’ve got the stamina of a porn star now, instead of a raccoon.”
Gina patted his bare chest. “That’s right, baby. You rocked my world all night long. And you taste like a caramel sundae.”
“Rollan and I heard all of it,” I said, giving Gina a high five.
“Quiet, amateurs. As long as she didn’t harm him or control his mind, we can work this out.”
“Zelda, I swear. We won’t use any more witchcraft. We’re leaving here at the end of summer anyway.”
“And you swear you won’t tell anyone you’re witches?”
“Cross my heart, hope to die.”
“And die you will, if you cross me. Another thing: No talk of that Bitches Union. This is a right-to-hex state. Just ask Jimmy Hoffa what we do with union organizers.”
“Isn’t he dead?” Gina asked.
“Exactly,” Zelda replied. “I’ll allow you to exist. You can fuck your fairy until his ding-a-ling falls off. And you, Blondie, can play ‘stuff the raccoon in the cage’ until you wear it out. You have until the end of August, then you leave. One more warning, if Baba Yaga finds out—”
Gina, Tiago, and I all started singing to the tune of the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann” with our own lyrics: “Ba ba ba, ba ba a yaga, Ba ba ba, ba ba a yaga.”
“You kids are assholes. Remember our deal: end of August.” After her last warning, she left.
“Back to bed, back to bed,” Tiago ordered, and we complied.

or once, a wish came true. I had my summer of love, and friendship. I’d even found a Shifter. I’ll probably omit a few things from my report to th

Chicago Chapter of Cryptozoologists and UFOologists, like the fact that I found a Shifter by running it over with a 1983 Chevy Suburban after I tore through a flea market.
The end of summer became a date I looked forward to. Knowing that Rollan would be with me made it seem like a beginning, not an end. I also found my soul-friend, my BFF, Gina, who would accompany me as we prepared to dive into the magical world of Witches Union Local 1313.
The rest of our summer was simply love. The future will be a whole new story.
