Tonight was the night. It was finally Friday, the day of Rob’s company ball. I had a stack of paperwork sitting behind me on my desk, but once again, I was unable to concentrate on it. Looking out the window of my eighth floor office, I passed the time watching people in the park below.
My thoughts were constantly on what would happen that evening. Would Rob give me more of what I craved so much? What if it was a one-time thing?
Just then I heard the handle of my office door come unlatched. I spun my chair around to face whoever was entering. It was Dave, my boss.
“Rebecca, can I have a moment?”
He came in and shut the door behind him.
Uh oh.
“Uh, sure,” I said as I pulled my chair up to my desk. Dave took the seat opposite me.
“I didn’t really want to have this conversation with you since you’re usually such a fantastic person to work with,” he started. “But I’ve been noticing a lot of paperwork piling up on your desk. Is everything all right?”
“Uh, yeah,” I replied, unable to think of anything clever to say. I knew why my work ethic was terrible over the previous days, but I clearly couldn’t tell that to Dave. My face began to flush. I hated being in trouble.
“Sir!” I heard a muffled voice yelling in the hall outside my office door.
Dave turned around, obviously curious about what was going on before looking back at me. He paused and listened for a moment, but just as he was about to begin talking again, we heard the voice protest:
“Sir, you can’t be in here!” It was Mary, the front desk secretary.
“Hold on one second,” Dave said as he stood up and started toward the door.
I felt relieved and quickly began formulating some kind of acceptable excuse as to why my work ethic was lacking. I knew I couldn’t get away with this for much longer. My team members were waiting on me. Next week I’d have to work a lot harder.
Just as Dave reached out for the handle it began to turn from the other side. He dropped his hand and stepped out of the way.
“Rob?” he said, obviously surprised.
Rob? What’s he doing here?
“Hello, Dave,” Rob replied before extending his hand for a handshake.
“Sir, you need to leave now!” Mary chimed in as her short and stumpy figure appeared behind him in the doorway, still eager to remove the trespasser.
“It’s all right, Mary,” Dave said as he allowed Rob into my office.
She looked at us before returning her gaze to Rob. Pointing two fingers at her eyes and then at his, she made it clear that she was watching him before she left us.
He smiled as she walked out of earshot. “She’s quite the character, eh?”
“I’m surprised you got past her!” I chimed in, and we all shared a short laugh.
There was a moment of awkward silence as we looked at one another. Then Dave finally turned to me. “Well, I think my work here is done. Can I expect 100% from you again next week, Rebecca?”
“100%!” I replied, relieved to have a boss like Dave.
“Perfect. I’ll leave you two alone, then. See you Monday.”
