Reader’s Guide

Questions for Discussion

  1. Despite her “wild” upbringing, Mari has managed to create a solid life for herself, mostly through her children. How do you think she’s able to be a good mother without having had any examples in her own life?
  2. Mari isn’t like “other” mothers, and her daughter is particularly aware of it. How important is it for teenagers to fit in, even through their parents?
  3. Ryan fell in love with Mari for complicated reasons, but hers were very simple. Why do you think Mari fell in love with her husband?
  4. How would Mari’s life have been different without Ryan’s influence?
  5. Not all of Mari’s childhood memories are bad. What were some positive aspects of her upbringing?
  6. How did the forest prince affect the rest of Mari’s choices, even into adulthood?
  7. Ryan’s selfishness impacts his family in an enormous way. Are his actions forgivable? Are the changes his actions created for the better or ultimately damaging?
  8. Mrs. Calder’s resentment of her daughter-in-law creates tension throughout the novel. How did Mari’s upbringing and history affect Mrs. Calder’s feelings about her, and was that fair?
  9. Mari eventually learns the truth about her history. Would it have been better for her to never know?
  10. Andrew and Mari have a complicated relationship. Will they be able to make it work somehow, or will it always be skewed?

Listening Guide

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

I could write without music, but I’m so glad I don’t have to. Included is a partial playlist of what I listened to while writing
Lovely Wild.
Please support the musicians by purchasing their music!
