Chapter One

“Bye, Rylan! Thanks for lunch!”

Rylan Friess lifted his head from his work and managed a smile for Samantha Domain and Talia Friess as they waved from the doorway. He shifted his gaze along the booths, where the two women’s mates were standing around and talking.

Thank goodness.

He knew he ought to be pleased that his pack mates were supporting the club. Samantha’s mates, Roan, Chet, and Justin, had managed the Aztec Club before handing over the reins to Rylan and his brothers. He appreciated that they would come eat here, but watching the mated couples together for the past hour had been surprisingly painful.

“My pleasure,” he said to Samantha. “Where are you off to now?”

“The boys are dropping us off to get our nails done,” Talia answered. “The babies are home with Cindy and Angela, so we’re having a girls’ day. Michelle is treating.”

Rylan smiled as he pictured little Stefan, his Alphas’ and queen’s son, as he had demanded attention from anyone who had been willing to give it as he’d toddled from person to person the previous evening. His big cousins Justin, Roan, and Chet Domain, with their mate and wife, Samantha, had cooed over their three-month-old baby boy, Tristan.

“Tell my queen I said hello,” Rylan answered respectfully.

Her mates having joined her at the door, Talia was on the point of leaving, but she turned and raised an eyebrow at Rylan. “I’m not repeating that ‘my queen’ stuff to her. You know she doesn’t like it.”

Rylan’s brother Tarkyn spoke up from behind him, his tone teasing. “But it befits her royal queenliness.”

Samantha rolled her eyes. “‘Queenliness’ isn’t even a word.”

Rylan watched his brother lean on the bar and grin. He didn’t have it in him to smile and banter right now, but that was never Tarkyn’s problem.

Hearing footsteps behind him, he turned and found his youngest brother, Chevy, coming up the stairs from the storage room, a case of beer in his hands. As Tarkyn and the two women continued to tease each other, Chevy glanced between them, and then his gaze darted to Rylan. More patient and cautious than Rylan, Chevy looked like he was wondering if Tarkyn ought to be trading jokes with women whose mates were so protective of them.

Chet Domain wrapped his arm around Samantha’s waist. “Let’s go, baby,” he said.

Samantha snuggled into Chet’s touch and happily directed her teasing at him instead. “What, are you going to use your ‘voice’ on me?”

“Maybe I will,” Chet answered with a playful growl. His arm still around her, they went out.

Rylan watched them go, feeling conflicted. He was happy for all those in the pack who had found their mates, but he wanted to share that joy, not watch it from the outside. Lunch today had brought the two sets of Betas, men who were powerful within the pack and happily mated, out with their women. By comparison, Rylan and his brothers might not be eligible for the honor of becoming Betas for years. As for finding their mate, that might never happen at all.

The others filed out as well, the men touching their women with the blend of possessiveness and affection that was the hallmark of a werewolf in love. When the door closed behind the last of them, Rylan let out the breath he’d been holding.

“I appreciate the business,” Chevy said, loading beer into the fridge, “but I kind of wish the Domains would show their approval some other way.”

Even Tarkyn’s smile had disappeared. “You’re just jealous,” he said, his eyes still locked on the door.

“We all are.” Rylan made himself put his mind to work. “Deliveries here yet?” he asked Chevy.

“Should be any moment.” Chevy closed the fridge door. He glanced at Tarkyn, who still looked moody. “We’ll get our turn eventually.”

Rylan didn’t answer. Not everyone did get a turn at true love. And even if a wolf found his mate, he had to woo her…

“Not soon enough,” Tarkyn complained.

“You just have to be pa…” Chevy stopped. “What’s that smell?”

Rylan inhaled deeply. The sweetest, most delectable scent he’d ever encountered assailed his nostrils. The aroma was wafting through the open door to the storage room and up the stairs.

He glanced at Tarkyn and Chevy, who had frozen and were also sniffing.

“What is…” Tarkyn began only to halt as a low growl rumbled up from his chest.

“Mate!” Rylan practically snarled and headed to the basement stairs. He descended them and strode across the storage room toward the ramp leading down from the open outer doors before he even knew he was going to move. His brothers were right behind him. Glancing around the room quickly and using his wolf’s enhanced eyesight, he was disappointed to find the basement empty. He moved stealthily toward the outside doors then halted in his tracks at the bottom of the ramp, which sloped up to where the delivery trucks parked outside, when the silhouette of a woman was showcased by the sunlight shining from behind her.

“Um, hi, I was just bringing the last of the delivery,” she said as she rolled the hand truck down the sloping concrete ramp and stopped halfway. He was a little frustrated that he couldn’t see all of her. He could make out the color of her hair, but the sun was still making it difficult for him to see. Then he took a step forward as she took another few steps down the ramp. His breath hitched in his throat and his heart stuttered. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and he wanted to pick her up, carry her to his truck, and take her back to the pack house and then spend hours buried inside her body. When the muscles in her body tensed with wariness he exhaled and then drew in a deep breath. He wanted to know everything about her. She wheeled the dolly the rest of the way down the ramp, and he stepped aside to give her room. The last thing he wanted to do was crowd her and make her even more skittish.

“Who are you?” Rylan asked.

“Uh, um, my name is Alyson Redding. I’m filling in for Shawn. He’s on vacation.”

“Let me do that for you.” Tarkyn moved in close and took the trolley handle from Alyson and then pushed it down the rest of the way.

“Uh, thanks, but that’s my job.”

“How long have you been working for the delivery company, Alyson?” Tarkyn asked, ignoring her statement.

“Um, two weeks.” She looked from Rylan to Chevy and Tarkyn then back to Rylan.

“I’m being rude.” He moved forward and held his hand out toward her. “I’m Rylan Friess and these are my brothers, Tarkyn and Chevy. We manage the club.”

“Pleased to meet you.” Alyson took his hand. A growl threatened to rumble up from his chest, but Rylan swallowed it down and pushed at his wolf. His skin tingled where their hands connected, and his beast was pushing at him to claim his mate. Alyson’s eyes widened, and she practically snatched her hand back. She must have felt the electricity sparking between them, too. Excitement permeated his body that she had felt the connection he did. Just when he and his brothers had been feeling so down after watching their cousins and pack members with their women their own mate had shown up. The sexual pull toward her was like nothing he’d ever felt before. All the women who had been in his life previously paled to nonexistence in comparison, and he was finding it hard to control his wolf. Her scent was driving him insane and his cock was rapidly filling with blood and his balls were aching.
