She gazed at me.
“But I kept thinking I’d rather be with the man I knew.” She stood up laboriously and sighed. “I’m going to take a shower and then let’s sleep all day. Okay?”
“Okay.”
I put my hand on her arm, feeling the urge to say something decisive, not only for her but also for myself. I struggled for a while, and then the words surfaced with great clarity. Later, examining those words, I felt they were my first ever work of art. “Don’t worry, Olga. It will all turn out like a long summer’s day…”
