Chapter Twenty Nine

Gia

Nothing in the world can go wrong today.

I’m sitting in the auditorium with the rest of the graduates, watching Caleb strut across the stage. He reaches across the podium, shaking Principal
Armstrong’s hand as he takes his diploma and then he heads straight down to where Kyle’s sitting, embracing him. They do this silly little hand clasp thing and I’m reminded of the boy that’s still inside the man Caleb has become, the one I love so very completely.

Experiencing this very human moment with him fills me with joy. I love seeing the two of them happy together. It has been almost two months since my father died and I won’t fool myself by pretending the silence from our enemies’ camp means there’s smooth sailing ahead. Although the Seraphine Council has done a fabulous job of keeping Aquardia’s lands in shape.

I only hope it lasts.

Maybe we have a chance in this war of hate and power and greed. Maybe love can make the difference. If Caleb and I can conquer darkness, then the humans can find enough strength and hope in their hearts as well as their lives to defeat any dark agenda Bernael has planned.

Later that weekend at the safe house, the fledglings get to meet Caleb for the first time. We tell them how we’ll be attending UNC together in the fall. Caleb has chosen Computer Science with an emphasis on graphic design. I’ve chosen Humanities because who would be any better to study the evolution of human culture than a girl who once belonged to a mythical race led by an ancient sea god.

Paige didn’t go back home. She couldn’t even if she wanted to. In the Melusine’s eyes, she betrayed her sister. The girl who was my sworn enemy has developed a conscience. Like the rest of us fighting for the sane group, she doesn’t want to see anyone else on either side suffer. Mabry has given her permission to stay on at the safe house. Turns out, she and I have more in common than we thought, like we both have a couple of dangerously insane sisters.

will have consequences. Even though we’re all trying to lead a normal life, we know that part of the veil has come down and the fallen have entered the lives of many people. Just as the prophecy said they would do.

“Oh, I love a girl who kicks ass. Especially a guy’s,” I tease as Caleb and I sit on the couch, watching one of his favorite Naruto shows.

“Hmm. Do you love it when a guy does this?” he asks, kissing my neck, nibbling it ever so gently, little zips of electricity firing through me.

“Maybe… I need… a few more examples,” I say in between his kisses. Mabry and the other fledglings are out on one of those top secret training missions. Perfect. I have my super sexy boyfriend all to myself… again.

Wags eyebrows at this point.

Cori slams through the front door and stumbles into the living room.

And then she sighs in frustration.

Caleb and I pull apart, still smiling at each other, and check out Cori. At once, dread slams into my chest.

“Cori, what’s wrong?” I stand and move over to where she’s hovering in the doorway, hoping to comfort her a bit.

She’s hysterical, her face and eyes filled with terror and tears are clouding her dark eyes.

“It’s so awful, Gia. Mabry just called. He says Aquardia has fallen! A new king has taken the white throne.”

“Oh no,” I say, listening while Caleb silences the T.V.

“That’s impossible. The Trident is gone. Well, kind of anyway.” I steal a quick glance at Caleb.

“Well, I don’t think Mabry’s lying,” Cori says.

“The Council would never let that happen. Unless… who did they surrender to?”

Cori’s face crumples. “Raze is the new sea king.”
