The name of the editor appears in small letters (too small) on one of the front pages of every book. For this book, I had the honor of working with two. I met regularly, week after week, first with Amnon Jackont over a beer in the evening (after the kids were in bed), and then with Noa Menhaim over coffee early in the morning (before they got up). Not only did I relish every minute and learn a great deal from these editors, but a large part of the final product is the result of their ideas, insights, and suggestions.
I am very grateful to applied criminologist Dana Kiser, who taught me about the profile of rapists, and to my sister, Einav Shoham, for her input on legal issues.
To Assaf Nachum for reading the first draft, and to his father, Eli Nachum, who didn’t object to the coincidental use of his name for one of my characters.
Thanks are also due to Nurit Waisman for agreeing to read the book before it was published and for the valuable opinions she offered, and to Tamar Bialik for always rooting for me, for her wise comments, and, no less important, for the title of the book.
To Yehiel Shamir and Nir Farber for allowing me to talk things through with them along the journey, and for their positive reinforcement.
To the staff at Kinneret Zmora-Bitan for their encouragement and support, especially when times were hard and pressure was high (times like this, for instance), and to Dov Alfon and Sefi Bar who, despite the fact that they are no longer with the publishing house, are happy to offer their advice whenever I ask.
To Ziv Lewis of Kinneret Zmora-Bitan, who began the journey into foreign lands with me and was a smart, enthusiastic, and patient partner (I had a lot of questions); to Jonny Geller, Kate Cooper, and the entire team at Curtis Brown, whose tireless and professional efforts have made it possible for you to read this page in English; to Sara Kitai, my talented translator. When reading the English translation, I sometimes forget the book was originally written in Hebrew. To Claire Wachtel from HarperCollins, who took the first leap of faith on my books. I hope, and trust, this is only the beginning of our road together.
To my family, particularly my parents, who are excited for me each time as if it were my first book, and take great delight in reporting what people are saying about it (as a parent myself, I understand what a wonderful feeling it is to hear such things).
Finally, with the deepest love, to Osnat, my personal secret ingredient as a writer and everything that entails. And of course, to Rona and Uri, who bring me more joy than words can describe.
